Structural health Monitoring (SHM) of civil and mechanical infrastructures using robots is getting a lot of attention in the scientific community. Ultimately, the subsurface defects as well as apparent flaws in the surface of such structures are identified by using Nondestructive Testing methods. these methods involve sensing probes using Magnetic, ultrasonic, or vibrational techniques, that are deployed by human experts over every inch of the surface under test. Due to the hazards posed by the height and structural complexities to such human experts in order to conduct the inspection, the Robotic platforms are gaining a lot of popularity to perform such inspections instead of human operators. In this paper, a robotic system is presented that can perform a coarse level of scan of a tall building using a combination of data sources such as drones and the probe deployment robots, and then further fusing the data together to formulate the actual defect information. the drones provide a rough estimate of the location of possible defect or abnormality and probe robots inspect the anomaly more closely. the probe robot presented in this paper represents the Magnetic Field Leakage (MFL) based scanning method. Similar techniques are being used in brute scanning strategies deployed in oil and gas pipelines but are not possible to be used in the SHM applications due to the need for more controlled and timely scans.

Modelling and simulation is at the core of future technology developments such as Big Data analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and More Electric Aircraft. the work herein presented explores the adoption of modelling and simulation methodologies based on a Model Based systems Design approach to support the definition of performance envelopes and verification procedures for the Power Drive Unit (PDU) of a Fowler flap system commonly used on commercial aircraft. Specifically, the work presented will introduce the modelling and simulation of the flap system and the modelling and simulation process used to assess the influence of PDU gearbox ratio using the Simulink flap system model. three types of analysis are carried out: time histories are provided to understand the key parameters in the system performance;sensitivity study to identify optimal gear ratio for the PDU;and finally the performance envelope of the PDU is evaluated. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

the systematic engineering of Cyber-Physical systems is a challenging endeavour. In order to manage the complexity of such multi-disciplinary development collaborative modelling and co-simulation has been proposed. In this setting models are made of different constituent models with different mathematical formalisms using different tools. this paper demonstrates how this can be achieved for a commercial system developed by MAN Diesel & Turbo using such a co-simulation approach. the tool chain is centered around a de-facto standard called Functional Mock-up Interface, and it is open for any tools that can support version 2.0 of this standard for co-simulation. the application support emission reduction control systems for large two-stroke engines which is strategically important. It is demonstrated how this approach can reduce the need for expensive tests on the real system in order to reduce the overall costs of validation. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

the next-future extensive diffusion of distributed generation and the increasing energy demands due to new components (e.g. electrical vehicles, energy storages) are changing the characteristics of the power grid at the distribution level, which makes it inevitable to introduce the synchrophasor measurement technology into the distribution network. this study analyses the power spectrum for the background noise of the field measured voltage signal of 0.4 kV in one electrical vehicle charging station. the coloured filter model is established using the autoregressive moving average process, which leads to the conclusion that the coloured noise spectrum is generally concave. the impact of background noise for the phasor estimation is evaluated in the steady state and dynamic state referring to ieee Std C37.118.1™-2011. © 2019 Institution of engineering and Technology. the paper aims to address problems concerning traffic congestion on roads. Simulation program is created for a smart traffic light control system using Laboratory Virtual Instrument engineering Workbench (LabVIEW). It intends to measure the traffic density by counting the number of vehicles in each lane and calculate the time of the traffic light. Trials are made for gathering the travel time on Espana Boulevard. Additional data are obtained through Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and a research.

Methods based on Rapidly-exploring Random Trees (RRTs) have been in use in robotics to solve motion planning problems for nearly two decades. On the other hand, in the membrane computing framework, models based on Enzymatic Numerical P systems (ENPS) have been applied to robot controllers. these controllers handle the power of motors according to motion commands usually generated by planning algorithms, but today there is a lack of planning algorithms based on membrane computing for robotics. With this motivation, we provide a new variant of ENPS called Random Enzymatic Numerical P systems with Proteins and Shared Memory (RENPSM) addressed to implement RRT algorithms and we illustrate it by presenting a model for path planning of mobile robots based on the bidirectional RRT algorithm. A software for RENPSM has been developed within the Robot Operating system (ROS) and simulation experiments have been conducted by means of the Pioneer 3-DX robot simulation platform.

In this work, the lightning impulse parameter estimation is formulated as a fractional model order reduction problem. In this method the received impulse is viewed as an impulse response of an unknown fractional order system. Unlike that of the existing techniques the estimation of the signal parameters is carried out for an unknown number of modes in which all signal modes are compressed using a proposed frequency domain template. this eliminates the necessity of identifying all signal parameters that usually needs computationally demanding matrix analysis. For this purpose, a fitness function is provided such that its minima are the parameters of the impulse by which the mean curve and the impairments are reconstructed accurately. Simulation results have shown accurate representation for the underlying impulse for oscillatory and front overshoot signal models.

Fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is one of popular approach to control any process variables which mimics human inference mechanisms. Due to their intelligent nature and simplicity, FLC has become very common among any intelligent control schemes. One of the challenges in implementing FLC is regarding to the tuning method of the membership functions. the fixed points along the universe of discourse, on which the border of fuzzy sets are defined, need to be determined properly to achieve the desired behavior. this study proposes a design of experiments using orthogonal array for optimizing the membership function for both inputs and outputs. the temperature control case was utilized to show the effectiveness of such method. Four control factors were chosen to conduct the experiments, where the objective is to diminish the integral absolute error of the step response. Analysis of means was used to determine the optimum membership function and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to find out the most significant control factors. the results show that the performance of the fine-tuned membership function is better than that of default membership function. the controller also shows robustness against variation and works properly within input full range.

this paper deals with the nine-phase motor control algorithm development, mainly with its implementation in target hardware using MATLAB Simulink. this environment allows control algorithm design using model based approach and the subsequent automatic conversion of control algorithms into C code using Simulink Embedded coder which is then used in the inverter software. Field oriented control algorithm has been designed and tuned for this motor. control algorithm has been tuned according to the measured motor parameters in simulations and then fine tuned on a real motor. the inverter control unit is based on AURIX Tricore microcontroller TC275. the code generation in Simulink has many settings. this paper analyses computational time depending on these settings. Potential problems with floating point math functions are outlined. Automatic code generation proves to be quick and easy tool for replacement of control algorithms or for fast control algorithm adaptation to different hardware.

In this paper, estimation of rotor speed and position by using model reference adaptive system (MRAS) with multilayer perceptron (MLP) for PMSM sensorless control are presented. Conventional controller which is PI controller for adaptation scheme still hunger with high accuracy information of PMSM for low speed region. Based on PI controller, the MLP which is more well-known about their learning efficiency and performance. this paper proposes a method for training an MLP network using Particles Swarm Optimization (PSO) called MLP-PSO. the PSO is used to find the optimum weights and biases in the MLP network. Finally, the proposed method is evaluated by comparing with PI controller in controlling the speed and position of PMSM. Simulation results under various speed and load conditions has shown that the MLP-PSO achieved well results than the PI controller in terms of system parameter such as rise time (T-r), settling time (T-s), percent overshoot (%OS), and root mean square error (RMSE).
