this paper shows how role-based access control (RBAC) models can be implemented in distributed object-based systems that follow OMG/CORBA standards. We introduce a novel approach that provides for automatic role activation by the security components of the middleware, which brings role-based access control to security-unaware applications.

Many emerging embedded systems consist of multiple embedded nodes, which are connected through an internal small area network. In such systems, the synchronization between the embedded nodes is essential to provide real-time cooperation environment. On small area networks, the severe obstacle for achieving real-time synchronization is the unpredictable overhead of the system software running on the embedded nodes. this is true especially if a traditional operating system has been installed. Despite of these drawbacks, it is quite common to run traditional operating systems on some of the embedded nodes to utilize various existing applications. In this paper, we propose a novel design of communication primitives called RTDiP-Sync for real-time distributed synchronization over small area networks. Experiment results show that the suggested design can minimize the communication overhead and provide better overhead prediction.

We discuss how to invoke a method on multiple object replicas in a quorum-based way. Suppose each instance of a method t on replicas of an object x invokes another method u on replicas in a quorum of an object y. Here, the method u is redundantly invoked multiple times on some replicas of the object y. If each instance of the method t issues a method to its own quorum, more number of replicas are manipulated than the quorum number this is quorum expansion. We discuss a protocol to invoke methods on replicas in a nested manner without the redundant invocation and quorum expansion. We evaluate the protocol on how many replicas are manipulated and requests are issued.

We present in this paper an unreliable distributed timing scrutinizer (UDTS), this mechanism captures the state of the network and, based on its observation, estimates the waiting time that maximizes the efficiency of a round-based protocol regarding the number and/or the duration of its computational rounds. An UDTS is not an abstract oracle, it is implementable and reveals the properties of the network. We illustrate our approach by addressing the consensus problem in asynchronous distributed systems equipped with an unreliable distributed timing scrutinizer the proposed protocol is conceptually simple. It benefits from the UDTS predictions to implement different convergence and decision conditions. this allows the protocol to be efficient in number and/or duration of rounds for stable networks.

the TWO (time-triggered Message-triggered object) model is a well-known real-time object model for distributed and timeliness-guaran teed computing. In a couple of years ago, we developed two TMO execution engines, named WTMOS and LTMOS, the former is for Windows platforms and the latter is for Linux platforms. those are middleware engines supporting deadline driven real-time execution of TMO methods and distributed IPC the engines have several advantages such as heterogeneous computing support, flexibility, and high portability since those have been as middlewares. However the deadline-driven schedulers of the middlewares lose temporal accuracy in some cases because the scheduling is performed by controlling priorities of real-time threads. To increase temporal accuracy and reduce overhead by middlewares, we have developed a new Linux-based operating system named "TMO-Linux" that supports distributed real-time execution of TMO instances as embedded services of an operating system. In this paper we present the functions and the structure of TMO-Linux. Our preliminary experimental results show that TMO-Linux has better timing accuracy and performance than the middleware engines.

BioCompose is an object-relational database query tool that runs on top of any relational database and provides an intelligent and complete object-relational interface to the user. Unlike the traditional approach, which is completely table driven, queries in BioCompose are structured along the lines of natural language and sentences. In BioCompose, the database server continuously monitors the triggers and integrity constraints which are expressed as logical rules and are evaluated based on incoming events which include real-time events, value events, transaction events, abstract events, and message events. this paper presents an novel approach that compiles triggers and integrity constraints into an asynchronous network to minimizethe rule evaluation effort under different kinds of events.

this paper describes IKE 2, which is distributed object computing middleware that supports the creation of interoperable real-time distributed applications. these applications appear in many domains, such as telecom, aerospace, military testing and training ranges, and financial services. IKE 2 combines the concepts of CORBA distributed objects and anonymous publish-subscribe data dissemination to provide a programming abstraction known as a stateful distributed object (SDO). Every SDO can have both a remote method interface and publication state. the remote method interface allows client applications to invoke methods on target objects efficiently without concern for their location, programming language, OS platform, communication protocols and interconnects, or hardware. the publication state of a given SDO is disseminated to applications that have expressed their interest by subscribing to certain characteristics, such as the type of the SDO. Subscribers can read the publication state of an SDO as if it were a local object. the SDOs provided by the IKE 2 metaobject model support inheritance from other SDOs, containment of other SDOs, and references to other SDOs. IKE 2 is implemented in C++. the API relies heavily on compile-time type-safety to help ensure reliable behavior at run-time-a critical feature of any real-time system. Automatic code generation is used to provide the high-level abstractions without unduly burdening application programmers.

object-oriented programming is a popular approach for modem software design in many fields. However, OOP extension for embedded parallel processing still has conceptual and practical problems. the paper considers concepts of merging OOP with parallel processing. Process-centric view of parallel OOP is presented. the VSIPL signal and image processing library standard is an example. Concepts of Parallel VSIPL with OOP features are proposed. they are based on shared-data rather then message-passing paradigm, on Asynchronous Growing Processes formal model of parallel computations and Shared Data object Interface (SDOI) middleware.

Schedulability of distributed real-time system has been studied extensively. However, due to the discrepancies the reference model used in scheduling analysis and the object-oriented model, the results cannot be easily used for distributed real-time object-oriented software development. Even if object-oriented models can be used to conduct schedulability analysis successfully, there still lacks an effective approach to validate the implementation with the design. Model-based approach alleviates the discrepancies between models of different stages and the implementation by automatically transforming models at different granularity, until the code generation for the implementation from the generated design. In this paper, an approach to incorporating schedulability analysis reference diagrams into the existing framework for model-based software development will be presented. It will improve the predictability of a distributed real-time system as well as increase the capability of model refinements and code generation using the new reference diagrams and schedulability analysis results to generate code for implementing scheduling and synchronization aspects of the distributed real-time system.

the development of distributed systems software poses unique challenges due to the diversity of hardware, software, and network protocols on the market today. Achieving interoperability with legacy systems and between systems provided by different vendors has, in the past, required the development of intricate interface specifications or proprietary bridging software. real-time, embedded distributed systems introduce additional performance and resource requirements. real-time systems require the ability to schedule tasks, predict the performance of those tasks, and perhaps most important, predict how the system will react to an overload situation or resource failure. Embedded systems are often characterized by resource constraints, diverse operating systems, and non-TCP/IP transports. Most real-time and/or embedded systems share the requirement of reasonably, high performance. High performance systems seek the lowest possible communication overhead and streamlined, optimized software layers. this paper discusses how CORBA has evolved to meet all these requirements, and uses ORBexpress CORBA from objective Interface as a reference implementation of real-time, high performance CORBA for embedded developers.
