this paper tackles the problem of ever changing embedded systems non-functional requirements, specially the architectural ones. It proposes a solution based on Features Model and MDA standards, which is called Features-oriented Model-Driven Architecture (FOMDA). this proposal can be used to help application designer in defining the mappings and transformations of UML models to as many target platforms as wished. this is done by configuring model-to-model and model-to-code transformations over tiers, where every tier represents some target platform properties that the system must be mapped and transformed to. To validate the proposal a case study related to the development of an embedded real-time system is presented, detailing how to transform a generic high-level UML model to a model specific for a given target platform. Obtained results are optimistic and conclude that the FOMDA approach can make designers re-think their current development process to make it more decoupled from a specific target platform.

the design and implementation of distributed real-time dependable systems is often dominated by non-functional considerations like timeliness, object placement and fault tolerance. In this paper we illustrate how aspect-oriented programming can be used to address the non-functional aspects of such system separately from the functional requirements and what benefits results from this separation of concerns. Besides the theoretical reflection we also present a case study in which distribution, timeliness, and fault tolerance aspects are added to a simple logging component. the examples are implemented using the emerging AspectC++ language for aspect-oriented programming with C++. In the course of this paper we also evaluated how well the general-purpose aspect language AspectC++ is suited to address the aspects specific to this domain.

this paper addresses the practical implementation of means of tolerating residual software faults in complex software systems, especially concurrent and distributed ones. there are several inherent difficulties in implementing such fault-tolerant software systems, including the controlled use of extra redundancy and the mixture of different design concerns. In an attempt to minimise these difficulties, we present a generic implementation approach, composed of a multi-layered reference architecture, a configuration method and an architectural pattern. We evaluate our implementation approach using an industrial control application whose control software we equip with the ability to tolerate a variety of software faults. the preliminary evidence shows that our approach can simplify the implementation process, reduce repetitive development effort and provide high flexibility through a generic interface for a wide range of fault tolerance schemes.

though Java is expected to have a wide range of embedded applications, there exist some problems in applying Java to real-time systems. the hybrid architecture, in which the Java runtime environment is implemented on a real-time OS, parts of the application requiring real-time properties are implemented on the real-time OS, and parts of the application requiring GUI features, extension of features, and replacing of programs should be implemented on the Java runtime environment, is practical. In this paper, we present interface specifications between Java threads and real-time tasks based the hybrid architecture we build, called JTRON specification, and experiences based on application development using its implementation. First, cooperative computation models between Java threads and realtime tasks in the architecture are described. Based on these models, we categorize three types of communication interface between Java threads and real-time tasks: real-time OS attach class, shared object with explicit locking mechanism, and stream-based communication. By standardizing the interface, not only the Java program, but also the real-time program becomes portable and reusable. Two of the three types of the interface can be applied to other real-time OSes also.

We present two classes of distributed algorithms called DRBA and DOBA, for decentralized, proactive resource allocation in asynchronous real-time distributed systems. the objective of the algorithms is to maximize aggregate application benefit and deadline-satisfied ratio for an user-specified future time interval. Since determining the optimal allocation is computationally intractable, the algorithms heuristically compute near-optimal allocations in polynomial-time. While the DRBA algorithms analyze subtask response times to determine allocation decisions, which are computationally expensive, the DOBA algorithms analyze processor overloads to compute their decisions in a much faster way. Within each class, we present three algorithms that differ in the way they tolerate end-host failures: no reallocation upon failure, stateless reallocation, and stateful reallocation.

Modern real-time applications are very dynamic and cannot cope with the use of worst case execution time to avoid overload situations. therefore scheduling algorithms that are able to prevent timing faults during overload are required. In this context, the value parameter has become useful to add generality and flexibility to such systems. In this paper we present the scheduling algorithm called DMB (Dynamic Misses Based), which is capable of dynamically changing tasks value in order to adjust their importance according to its timing faults rate. the main goal of DMB is to allow the prediction of timing faults during overloads and thereby support a dynamic tuning of tasks fault rate. It is used to enhance the features of the previously defined TAFT (time-Aware Fault-Tolerant) scheduler Obtained results show that DMB in conjunction with TAFT reached the most promising results during overloads, allowing to control tasks degradation in a graceful and determined way.

In recent years we observe a rapid growth in the deployment of machine learning workloads on big data analytics frameworks like Apache Spark and Apache Flink. these workloads are typically represented as graphs, run on shared infrastructures and often have much more demanding resource requirements than those traditionally found in typical enterprise settings. However, predicting the execution times of the workloads is important as they often run on shared public or private infrastructures and, thus, their execution is greatly affected by the resource sharing, the hardware infrastructure utilized as well as the choice of the configuration parameters provided by the frameworks. In this work, we propose a fast and efficient performance prediction system to address the challenge of predicting the execution times of big data workloads, exploiting the fact that workloads are represented as processing graphs and often share similar structures and parameters. thus, we can use the performance models we have built for already deployed workloads, to estimate the end-to-end execution time for a new workload. Previous works assume that a large number of profiling runs can be utilized for building the prediction models. However, this assumption is not always valid and more elaborate mechanisms need to be applied. Our detailed experimental evaluation on our local Spark cluster illustrates that our approach can predict accurately the execution time of a wide range of Spark workloads.

In this paper we present a prototype of the RTSC - the real-time System Compiler. the RTSC is a compiler-based tool that leverages the migration from event-triggered to time-triggered real-time systems. For this purpose, it uses an abstraction called Atomic Basic Blocks (ABBs) which is used to capture all relevant dependencies of the event-triggered system in a so-called ABB-graph. this ABB-graph is transformed by the RTSC and finally mapped to a statically computed schedule that could be executed by standard time-triggered real-time operating systems. Moreover, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and the operation of our prototype by transforming the event-triggered implementation of a real-world embedded system into a trime-triggered equivalent. © 2010 ieee.

Service overlays that support distributed stream processing applications are increasingly being deployed in wide-area environments. the inherent heterogeneous, dynamic and large-scale nature of these systems makes it difficult to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the distributed stream processing applications. In this paper we address the load balancing problem for distributed stream processing applications and present a decentralized and adaptive algorithm that allows the composition of distributed stream processing applications on the fly across a large-scale system, while satisfying their QoS demands. the algorithm fairly distributes the load on the resources and adapts dynamically to changes in the resource utilization or the QoS requirements of the applications. Our experimental results demonstrate the scalability, efficiency and performance of our approach.

In an ORC (object-oriented real-time computing) environment, it is important to reduce message retransmissions during message passing because these retransmissions cause significant time delay. And, this makes it difficult to achieve the necessary timeliness. A cause of retransmission is message loss due to buffer overflow at the reception side. Here a P+I+D (P for proportional, I for integral and D for derivative) adaptive buffer control algorithm is proposed to prevent such possible overflow. the I control depends on the Convergence Algorithm (CA), which is a stable and efficient IEPM (Internet End-to-End Performance Measurement) toot that predicts the mean message roundtrip time (RTT) of a communication channel quickly and accurately,. the P+I+D algorithm was tested under different conditions in a mobile ORC (MORC) environment, where mobile agents collaborate freely over the Internet. the different test results confirm that the proposed P+I+D approach is indeed effective for preventing buffer overflow.
