In classical real-time systems the resources for an application are allocated at system start so that every resource request can be fulfilled in future. this would lead to much internal waste of resources in the case of modern Self-X systems, because these systems have highly dynamic resource consumptions. the Flexible Resource Manager (FRM) was developed to overcome this problem. the manager puts temporarily unused resources at other applications' disposal. In this paper the FRM approach is evaluated by concrete application examples and randomly generated applications. © 2010 ieee.

Sensor webs are often composed of servers connected to distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems that operate in open environments where operating conditions, workload, resource availability, and connectivity cannot be accurately characterized a priori. the South East Alaska MOnitoring Network for Science, Telecommunications, Education, and Research (SEAMONSTER) project exhibits many common system management and dynamic operation challenges for effective, autonomous system adaptation in a representative sensor web. these challenges cover both field operation (e.g., power management through system sleep/wake cycles and reaction to local environmental changes) and server operation (e.g., system adaptation for new/modified goals, resource allocation for a changing set of applications, and configuration changes for fluctuating workload). this paper presents the results of integrating and applying quality-of-service (QoS)-enabled component middle-ware, dynamic resource management, and autonomous agent technologies to address these challenges in SEAMONSTER.

In this paper, a Role-based Access Control (RBAC) model is applied and extended to a multimedia version called Multi-Role Based Access Control (MRBAC), which can fully support the comprehensive and multilevel security control requirements of the distributed multimedia applications. the object-oriented concept is adopted in MRBAC to perform the hybrid role hierarchy management and security roles and rules administration. In summary, MRBAC can: 1) support the multi-level security protection for multimedia data;2) provide access control by checking both the time constrains and IP addresses;and 3) decentralize the administration functions to make the access control management more efficient.

the demand for real-time database services has been increasing recently. Examples include sensor data fusion, stock trading, decision support, web information services, and data-intensive smart spaces. In these systems, it is essential to execute transactions in time using fresh (temporally consistent) data. Due to the high service demand, many transactions may miss their deadlines regardless of their importance. To address the problem, we present a service differentiation architecture for real-time databases. Transactions are classified into several service classes based on their importance. Under overload, different degrees of deadline miss ratio guarantees are provided among the service classes according to their importance. A certain data freshness guarantee is also provided for the data accessed by timely transactions which finish within their deadlines. Feedback control is applied to support the miss ratio and freshness guarantees. In a simulation study, our service differentiation approach shows a significant performance improvement compared to the baseline approaches. the specified miss ratio and freshness are supported even in the presence of unpredictable workloads and data access patterns.

Shared Simple Virtual Environment (SSVE) is an object-oriented software framework designed for object-focused small group collaboration in highly dynamic virtual environments. Compared to most other collaborative virtual environment systems, SSVE allows a team of six to eight people to collaborate closely on a highly interactive model construction task. SSVE is a "multi-multi" framework-multi-user, multi-threaded, multi-platform, and multi-modal. Numerous interaction, awareness and collaboration mechanisms are provided by the framework and by applications that use the framework, including "what you see is what I see," deictic references, and exclusive object access. Several concurrency control mechanisms are also supported through the framework, including those suitable for closely-coupled synchronous collaboration in highly dynamic virtual worlds. In addition, support is provided for emergent group collaboration modes, and a novel user interface widget, the collaboration tree, is introduced to facilitate subgroup formation and integration of task results. In short, SSVE is a framework for the development of applications which explore group collaboration mechanisms in highly-interactive shared virtual environments. A small pilot study that used the framework to validate the utility and stability of the framework, as well as to investigate larger issues of group collaboration, is also presented.

distributed real-time computing is one of the enabling technologies in establishing a team of autonomous robots. A team of soccer playing robots, Paderkicker, contains many computing nodes handling environment perception, artificial intelligence, team coordination, autonomous actuation, and interactions with external entities such as a remote server. Robots must act with varying degrees of autonomy in real-time. the time-triggered Message-triggered object (TMO) programming scheme offers a high-level high-precision approach to programming of distributed real-time computing operations. the TMO programmer can apply deadlines to method executions and result-arrivals in a straightforward way. He is thus relieved from dealing with low-level resource allocation details and can show considerably increased productivity. this paper describes a TMO structuring approach for constructing teams of autonomous robots. A TMO network architecture is described for the Paderkicker team. © 2006 ieee.

General-purpose middleware must often be specialized for resource-constrained, real-time and embedded systems to improve their response-times, reliability, memory footprint, and even power consumption. Software engineering techniques, such as aspect-oriented programming (AOP), feature-oriented programming (FOP), and reflection make the specialization task simpler, albeit still requiring the system developer to manually identify the system invariants, and sources of performance and memory footprint bottlenecks that determine the required specializations. Specialization reuse is also hampered due to a lack of common taxonomy to document the recurring specializations. this paper presents the GeMS (Generative Middleware Specialization) framework to address these challenges. We present results of applying GeMS to a distributed real-time and Embedded (DRE) system case study that depict a 21-35% reduction in footprint, and a 36% improvement in performance while simultaneously alleviating 97% of the developer efforts in specializing middleware. © 2011 ieee.

Allowing real-time systems to autonomously evolve or self-organize during their life-time poses challenges on guidance of such a process. Hard real-time systems must never break their timing constraints even if undergoing a change in configuration. We propose to enhance future real-time systems with an in-system model-based timing analysis engine capable of deciding whether a configuration is feasible to be executed. this engine is complemented by a formal procedure guiding system evolution. the distributed implementation of a runtime environment (RTE) implementing this procedure imposes two key questions of consistency: How do we ensure model consistency across the distributed system and how do we ensure consistency of the actual system behavior with the model? We present a synchronization protocol solving the model consistency issues and provide a discussion on implications of different mode-change protocols on consistency of the system with its model. © 2010 ieee.

To handle the extreme situation that must manage positional information of a very large volume, at least millions, of moving objects, a cluster-based scalable distributed computing system architecture, called the GALIS, which consists of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone, was proposed In this paper, we propose a valid time management and time-zone shifting scheme, which are essential in realizing the long-term location data subsystem of GALIS, but missed in our previous prototype development. We explain how to manage valid time of moving objects to avoid ambiguity of location information. We also describe time-zone shifting algorithm, with three variations, such as RT-TZS, B-TZS and TPB-TZS. through experiments related with query processing time and CPU utilization, we show the efficiency of the proposed time-zone shifting schemes.

the large software applications of today provide abstractions of the real-life systems that they support. A digital model of the system, and of the changes that occur within, are being maintained and updated, as triggered by real-life events. Morphologically, such applications contain several distinct architectural entities: databases holding the state, central components describing how the system reacts to external events and mechanisms through which the user can view the current state and issue new commands. Each of these entities may use distinct paradigms and employ different technologies. A production-ready software application ends up assembling a relatively high technology stack and provides the final abstractions for both the problem and its solution. In this paper we propose a short-circuit for the long chain of technologies that are usually employed in large, production-ready software applications. the resulting architecture is a distributed, message-based system which behaves as a hybrid between a database and a runtime environment. the system operates with persistent and live entities, encapsulating both state and operations and therefore easily assimilated with OOP classes.
