Component based software development (CBSD) has been established in the development of automotive real-time embedded applications at Bosch. CBSD together with software product line (SPL) practice has improved software reuse, productivity, quality and complexity management, by raising the level of abstraction for software constructions and by sharing services. Although CBSD has contributed to the aforementioned improvement in the software development practice, the existing Bosch component model often requires software developers to take a close look at the implementation including models (e.g., ASCET-MD ) and even complex source code to understand software behavior and dependencies when reusing and adapting software components. this hinders the realization of the full benefits of CBSD, as the available information on the component level does not sufficiently describe important aspects of software behavior. this paper presents the concepts and case studies of 'signal flows' and 'mode dependent signal flows', which provide crucial software behavior information for real time embedded systems at the component level.

NAND flash memory becomes one of the most popular storage for portable embedded systems. Although many flash-aware file systems, such as JFFS2 and YAFFS2, were proposed, the large memory consumption and the long mount delay have been serious obstacles for large-capacity NAND flash memory. In this paper, we present a new flash-aware file system called DFFS (direct flash file system) which fetches only the needed metadata on demand from flash memory. In addition, DFFS employs two novel metadata management schemes, inode embedding scheme and hybrid inode indexing scheme, to improve the performance of metadata operations. Comprehensive evaluation results using microbench- mark, postmark, and Linux kernel compilation trace, show that DFFS has comparable performance to JFFS2 and YAFFS2, while achieving a small memory footprint and instant mount time.

A wireless sensor network (WSN) typically consists of a large number of small-sized devices that have very low computational capability, small amounts of memory and the need to conserve energy as much as possible (most commonly by entering suspended mode for extended periods of time). Previous approaches for WSN time synchronization do not satisfactorily address all of the requirements of WSN environments. thus, this paper proposes a new fault-tolerant WSN time sychronization algorithm that is extremely fast (when compared to previous algorithms), achieves a guaranteed level of time synchronization for all non-faulty nodes, can accommodate nodes that enter suspended mode and then wake up, utilizes very little communication and computation resources (thereby leaving those resources available for use by other applications), operates in a completely decentralized manner and tolerates up to f faulty nodes. the efficacy of the proposed algorithm is shown using analysis and experimental results.

this paper introduces ReDAC, a new algorithm for dynamic reconfiguration of multi-threaded applications. In order to achieve high reliability and availability, distributed component software has to support dynamic reconfiguration. Typical examples include the application of hot-fixes to deal with security vulnerabilities. ReDAC can be implemented on top of the modern component-platforms Java and .NET. We extend the statical term component, denoting a unit of deployment, to runtime by defining a capsule (runtime component instance) to be a set of interconnected objects. this allows us to apply dynamic updates at the level of components during runtime without stopping whole applications. Using system-wide unique identifiers for threads (logical thread IDs), we can detect and also bring capsules into a reconfigurable state by selectively blocking threads, relying on data structures maintained by additional logic integrated into the capsules using aspect-oriented programming. An important contribution of this paper is that ReDAC supports the dynamic reconfiguration of distributed multi-threaded and re-entrant components with cyclic call dependencies.

Performance and reliability are two major design concerns of flash-memory storage systems, especially for low-cost products. Although various excellent flash- memory management schemes are proposed, there is little work done on how to evaluate the designs or implementations of flash-memory storage systems. Many of the existing evaluation workloads for flash-memory storage systems still rely on those based on hard disks. this work aims at the needs of behavior analysis of flash-memory storage systems and their evaluations. In particular, a set of evaluation metrics and their corresponding access patterns are proposed. the behaviors of flash memory are also analyzed in terms of performance and reliability issues.

Service oriented architecture (SOA) allows multiple and heterogeneous data resources to be integrated within a single service while hiding the implementation details and formats of data resources from users of the service. However, data sources for a service are often distributed geographically and connected with long-latency networks; time and bandwidth consumption of data transportation may have an impact on the system performance. Dynamic data replication is a practical solution to this problem. By replicating data copies to appropriate sites, this approach aims to reduce time and bandwidth consumptions over networks. Existing strategies for dynamic replication are typically based on so-called single-location algorithms for identifying a single site for data replication. In this paper we discuss the issues with single-location strategies in large-scale data integration applications, and examine potential multiple-location schemes. Dynamic multiple-location replication is NP-complete in nature. We therefore transform the multiple-location problem into several classical mathematical problems with different parameter settings, for which efficient approximation algorithms exist. Experimental results indicate that unlike single-location strategies our multiple-location schemes are efficient with respect to access latency and bandwidth consumption, especially when the requesters of a data set are distributed over a large scale of locations.

Many research works have focused on developing multimedia applications such as video conferencing and video-on-demand (VoD). From this trend, we see that the VoD service will become the main issue in future. However, service providers don't efficiently provide VoD services for a great number of clients yet. One of the reasons is the high cost in providing VoD services. Because a multimedia service consumes wide bandwidth in spite of great advances of video compression, network bandwidth resource must significantly be spent to maintain multiple clients concurrently. To overcome this problem, we proposed a new transmission method using the broadcast, named as a poly harmonic staggered broadcasting (PHSB) method. the proposed method is an efficient transmission method that has a simple structure of the staggered broadcasting method and substantially improved bandwidth efficiency of the poly harmonic broadcasting method. the numerical results show that the viewer's waiting time of the PHSB method is close to the waiting time of the harmonic broadcasting method which theoretically has the best bandwidth efficiency. Furthermore, the maximum buffer requirements of this can be adapted by adjusting the short front part of a video size.

Synthetic natural environment (SNE) data is different from the general entity data. SNE data are data-field changing with time and space. the hierarchical synthetic environment database system was designed according to the SNE data characteristics and the simulation application needs. the SNE database system included primary environment database, standard environment database compatible with synthetic environment data presentation interchange specification (SEDRIS) and run-time environment database. Primary environment database was composed of all kinds of primitive data. the standard database compatible with SEDRIS was completed combined relational model with object model. the run-time database was developed using memory database technology. Finally, a simulation instance was used to validate the synthetic environment database performance. the results show that synthetic environment database can support the diverse application needs, and can meet real-time simulation requirement.

A novel distributed and real-time air combat simulation system, called BGS, is described. the core design goal is high agility. It represents the ability to accommodate change and the efficiency to respond to unpredictable events. To achieves the goal, service-oriented air combat simulation architecture was established. Its main ideal is to design model units as services that can communicate and interoperate with any other services. A service is autonomous and is fully defined in a description contract which contains some combination of syntactic, semantic, and behavioral information. the system is described as an abstract composition of service description contracts. It becomes concrete at run time. Among the system the description contracts are implemented as services. And all services automatically discover and bind each other. the process is a continuous run-time activity that responds to simulation needs and the availability of services. this paper first discusses the service-oriented simulation architecture, including the overview of the architecture, the approach to design service in BGS, how a composite service is implemented, and how services collaborate with each other in the system. And then it describes how the system support integrated service management which covers end-to-end scope from service development to execution. Finally, it demonstrates a service-oriented air combat simulation platform and summarizes the system.

In object-oriented real-time computing scenarios, particularly where Corba is used in embedded systems with resource constraints, developers and system architects often utilize Corba object references as authorization tokens. this paper investigates the security of this method in principle, and it presents the results of the analysis of the work and computing effort necessary for a potential attacker to fabricate Corba object references to existing objects for the purpose of illegitimately gaining access to these objects at the instance of seven widely used Corba products.
