It is usually infeasible to test distributed systems and protocols for dependability, fault-tolerance and performance in the real operation environment. this is attributed to the cost of setting up the hosting distributed environment and the difficulty of controlling such a dynamic environment. the factors are too many and are very dynamic. this paper presents the wide area network emulator for CORBA applications: a general purpose software tool that emulates a distributed networked environment for CORBA middleware and applications and gives the user full control over the emulation environment in addition to the ability to inject network-related faults

Increasingly the need for protecting information from unauthorized access has lead to more attention in the field of information security. Access control mechanisms have been in place for the last four decades and are a powerful tool utilized to ensure security. In a real-time distributed computing environment, systems have to meet timing constraints for time sensitive applications, such as obtaining financial quotes and operating command and control systems. However, real-time distributed computing environment security is yet to be investigated. Earlier work examined a time Triggered Message Triggered object (TMO) scheme that provides real-time services in a distributed computing environment secured by applying a Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). In this paper we describe the application of a sophisticated Usage Control (UCON) model for a TMO and subsequently design an application that utilizes a Coordinated Anti-Missile Interceptor Network (CAMIN) system. this application is a secure CAMIN based upon a secure TMO that applies a real time UCON (RT-UCON) in the CAMIN environment

In many software development projects, performance requirements are not addressed until after the application is developed or deployed, resulting in costly changes to the software or the acquisition of expensive high-performance hardware. To remedy this, researchers have developed model-driven performance analysis techniques for assessing how well performance requirements are being satisfied early in the software lifecycle. In some cases, companies may not have the expertise to perform such analysis on their software; therefore they have an independent assessor perform the analysis. this paper describes an approach for conducting independent model-driven software performance assessments of UML 2.0 designs and illustrates this approach using a real-time signal generator as a case study

As quality of service (QoS)-enabled component middleware technologies gain widespread acceptance to build distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems, it becomes necessary for these technologies to support real-time publish/subscribe services, which is a key requirement of a large class of DRE systems. To date there have been very limited systematic studies evaluating different approaches to integrating real-time publish/subscribe services in QoS-enabled component middleware. this paper makes two contributions in addressing these key research questions. First, we evaluate the pros and cons of three different design alternatives for integrating publish/subscribe services within QoS-enabled component middleware. Second, we empirically evaluate the performance of our container-based design and compare it with mature object-oriented real-time publish/subscribe implementations. Our studies reveal that both the performance and scalability of our design and implementation are comparable to its object-oriented counterpart, which provides a key guidance to the suitability of component technologies for DRE systems.

Many emerging applications operate on continuous unbounded data streams and need real-time data services. Providing deadline guarantees for queries over dynamic data streams is a challenging problem due to bursty stream rates and time-varying contents. this paper presents a prediction-based QoS management scheme for real-time data stream query processing in distributed environments. the prediction-based QoS management scheme features query workload estimators, which predict the query workload using execution time profiling and input data sampling. In this paper, we apply the prediction-based technique to select the proper propagation schemes for data streams and intermediate query results in distributed environments. the performance study demonstrates that the proposed solution tolerates dramatic workload fluctuations and saves significant amounts of CPU time and network bandwidth with little overhead

In the last decade, the size and complexity of the software in embedded systems have increased. the present study attempts to decrease the complexity and difficulty of software development in embedded systems. We herein introduce a new component system that is suitable for embedded systems. It is possible to estimate the memory consumption of an entire application since the proposed system adopts a static configuration. In addition, this system takes into account to be used in several domains of embedded systems because several particle sizes of component are supported. Moreover, the concept of the component for a distributed application is presented

this work presents a proposal to use aspect orientation in the analysis and design of distributed embedded real-time systems (DERTS). these systems have several requirements directly related to their main characteristics, the so-called non-functional requirements (NFR), which refer to orthogonal properties, conditions, and restrictions that are spread out over the entire system. Pure object-oriented methods do not address successfully those so called cross-cutting concerns, so new technologies, like aspect orientation, are applied in order to fulfill this gap. the paper presents DERAF i stributed embedded real-time aspects framework, an extensible and high-level framework (i.e. implementation-independent) to handle NFR of DERTS at earlier design stages. DERAF combines the use of aspects with RT-UML, aiming to separate the handling of non-functional from functional requirements in the model driven design of DERTS. the paper presents the use of DERAF on a case study of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV)

Finite state machine (FSM) models are widely used to model the operations of computer systems. Since the basic FSM model is timeless, it is not possible to model within the basic FSM framework system properties that are dependent on the progression of real time, such as the duration of computations or the limited temporal validity of real-time data. To overcome these limitations, efforts have been made to modify the FSM model to include some notion of time. It is the objective of this paper to expand existing work on basic FSMs and timed automata to include the concept of a sparse global time base as a central element of the model. We call such an extended FSM model a periodic finite state machine (PFSM) model. the PFSM model also incorporates the notions of state variables, global time, periodic clock constraints, and time-triggered activities. thereby, PFSMs enable a concise and intuitive representation of distributed control systems and reduce the gap between a modeled system and its implementation

In service-based systems, services from various providers can be integrated following specific workflows to achieve users' goals. these workflows are often executed and coordinated by software agents, which invoke appropriate services based on situation changes. these agents need to be deployed on underlying platforms with respect to various requirements, such as access permission of agents, real-time requirements of workflows, and reliability of the overall system. Deploying these agents manually is often error-prone and time-consuming. Furthermore, agents need to migrate from hosts to hosts at runtime to satisfy deployment requirements. Hence, an automated agent deployment mechanism is needed. In this paper, an approach to automated agent deployment in service-base systems is presented. In this approach, the deployment requirements are represented as deployment policies, and techniques are developed for generating agent deployment plans by solving the constraints specified in deployment policies, and for generating executable code for runtime agent deployment and migration.

Recently, new trends in application development for distributed platforms, such as the composable services model, attempt to provide more flexibility in system design, deployment and execution. Such trends, and particularly the referred composable services model, can also be beneficial in real-time distributed embedded systems, also providing a means to support more adaptive behaviors, reacting to the execution environment or coping with system reconfiguration. this paper explores a relatively new direction, which is the extension of the service-based model to dynamic, i.e. at run-time, composition in real-time distributed environments, in order to support the level of flexibility and adaptibility referred above. the paper proposes an architecture to support such dynamic service composition that is based on the flexible time triggered communication paradigm (FTT).To achieve the desired goal, we also redefine the concepts of service and service-based application in the concept of the FTT paradigm. Finally, we show experimental results obtained with a prototype implementation of the proposed architecture that confirm its feasibility and good temporal behavior
