the High Level Architecture (HLA) is widely used in defense applications as a common framework for modeling and simulation. the Federation Development and Execution Process (FEDEP) is a generalized process to build HLA federations from scratch. However simulation model design, implementation, testing and execution defined in the FEDEP are time consuming and expensive. the Model Construction Environment (MCE) is introduced in this paper as a web-based system to enhance the efficiency of the federation development by reusing the existing Simulation object Models (SOM) to build new Federation object Models (FOM). To ensure the compatibility of the SOMs in a FOM, a Matching Algorithm is defined and tested. An Extensible Elements scheme is designed to help shape the characteristics of the FOM/SOMs. this study can contribute to more cost-efficient methodologies for the development and execution of simulation models.

Devices in ubiquitous computing environments are usually embedded, wearable, and handheld, have resource constraints, and are all connected to each other through wireless connections and other computers possibly through fixed network infrastructures, such as the Internet. these devices may form numerous webs of short-range and often low-power mobile ad hoc networks to exchange information. distributed object computing (DOC) middleware technologies have been successful in promoting high quality and reusable distributed software for enterprise-oriented environments. In order to reap the same benefit in ubiquitous computing environments, it is important to note that the natural interactions among distributed objects in ubiquitous computing environments are quite different due to various factors, such as bandwidth constraints, unpredictable device mobility, network topology change, and context-sensitivity (or situation-awareness) of application objects. Hence, the interactions among distributed objects tend to be more spontaneous and short-lived rather than predictable and long-term. In this paper, a middleware protocol, RKF, to facilitate distributed object-based application software to interact in an ad hoc fashion in ubiquitous computing environments is presented. RKF addresses both spontaneous object discovery and context-sensitive object data exchange. Our experimental results, based on RKF's implementation and evaluation inside the object request broker of our RCSM middleware test bed, indicate that it is lightweight, has good performance, and can be easily used in PDA-like devices.

Shared Simple Virtual Environment (SSVE) is an object-oriented software framework designed for object-focused small group collaboration in highly dynamic virtual environments. Compared to most other collaborative virtual environment systems, SSVE allows a team of six to eight people to collaborate closely on a highly interactive model construction task. SSVE is a "multi-multi" framework-multi-user, multi-threaded, multi-platform, and multi-modal. Numerous interaction, awareness and collaboration mechanisms are provided by the framework and by applications that use the framework, including "what you see is what I see," deictic references, and exclusive object access. Several concurrency control mechanisms are also supported through the framework, including those suitable for closely-coupled synchronous collaboration in highly dynamic virtual worlds. In addition, support is provided for emergent group collaboration modes, and a novel user interface widget, the collaboration tree, is introduced to facilitate subgroup formation and integration of task results. In short, SSVE is a framework for the development of applications which explore group collaboration mechanisms in highly-interactive shared virtual environments. A small pilot study that used the framework to validate the utility and stability of the framework, as well as to investigate larger issues of group collaboration, is also presented.

We present the modeling and analysis of distributed autonomous robots using the specification language for hybrid systems, called CHARON. Coordination between distributed autonomous robots has attracted researchers of embedded and hybrid systems, since there has been increasing demand for multiple robots working together in a dynamically changing or unknown environment to carry out missions such as search and rescue, cooperative localization, and scouting and reconnaissance. To maximize the capability of performing tasks collaboratively as a team, formation control is one of crucial parts in developing distributed autonomous robots. In this paper formation control of a team of robots is modeled using CHARON and the model is analyzed using simulation with assertion checking capability of the CHARON toolset.

this paper presents our experiments for integrating OMG MIOP (Mullicast Inter-ORB Protocol) specifications into a CORBA ORB. We proposed an integration model which allows the coexistence of two different protocol stacks (IIOP/TCP/IP and MIOP/UDP/IP multicast), making possible a large spectrum of middleware support for distributed objects communication. that integration model is discussed in this paper, giving evidence of the compatibility of our approach with the CORBA specifications. We also do some considerations about the implementation of this model in a CORBA compliant ORB. © 2003 ieee.

object-oriented languages support many modem programming paradigms such as information hiding, inheritance, polymorphism, and dynamic binding. As a result, software systems implemented in OO languages are more reusable and reliable than those in non-OO. Many legacy software systems were created before OO programming became popular and needed to be redesigned and updated to OO programs. the process of abstracting OO designs from the procedural source code was often done manually or with limited assistance from program structural diagrams. Most reengineering focuses on the functionality of the original program, and the OO redesign often results in a completely new design based on the designers' understanding of the original program. Such an approach is not sufficient, for it not only, takes time and effort for designers to become familiar with the original program, but the approach itself is also mistake-prone due to the human involvement. this paper presents a computer-aided semi-automatic method that abstracts OO designs from the original procedural source code. More specifically, it is a method for OO redesign based on program structural diagrams, visualization, and execution slice. We conducted a case study by applying this method to an inventory management software system. Results indicate that our method can effectively and efficiently abstract an appropriate OO design out of the original C code as well as re-generate part of the system in C++ code based on this new OO design.

distributed simulation enables participants situated in different geographical locations to share a common virtual world, which is called a distributed Virtual Environment (DVE). Among the different research topics concerned with DVEs, there is a current trend of linking Multi-Agent systems and DVEs together. With the properties of autonomy, social ability, reactivity and proactiveness, agents can be used to represent entities in DVEs, where fast and accurate decision making is a determining factor of the whole environment. this paper provides a description of integrating agents into an HLA-based distributed simulation. It focuses on how to construct the sensor of an agent with different interest management schemes. Using the JADE (Java Agent DEvelopment Framework) agent toolkit and the High Level Architecture (HLA) in our prototype, a minesweeping game, we outline two different implementations of this game. Due to the dynamic characteristics of agents, a problem of overdue information from the environment is discussed, and we propose an enlarged subscription region method to solve this problem. Moreover, advisories provided by the HLA are adopted to reduce the overheads. Conclusions are drawn based on the experimental results of these implementations.

Continued research into distributed agent-based systems and evolving Web based technologies are opening up tremendous possibilities for the deployment of large scale and highly extensible and flexible simulation systems. However, the question remains as to how well agent and Web based simulation systems can use underlying network services. this is especially true for complex distributed simulations that have multiple participants and real-time data delivery requirements. this paper addresses the issue of interconnection patterns among Web-based simulation agents. We first describe a simple agent-oriented architectural extension to an existing distributed simulation system. Next, we present a set of interconnection algorithms between the agents in the system, under the assumption that only end-host multicast is available. We experimentally evaluate our approach under a number of different scenarios. Our results show that by using a proper connection strategy it is possible to get performance comparable to network-layer multicast for agent-based systems that use end-host multicast. © 2003 ieee.

this paper presents the design and implementation of distributed object-oriented Web-based Simulation (DOWS). DOWS is an object-oriented simulation system based on a new concept, a directoractor model. It also models a distributed simulation as a collection of actor objects running concurrently at different nodes. DOWS is implemented using Java objects which interact with each other through Java RMI. Each director object is implemented as web client which downloads and executes the proper applet from a HTTP server, and hence DOWS provides a web-enabled simulation environment which allows users to easily instantiate the simulation model using the HTTP server. the whole simulation can be speed up by decomposing the simulation model into several submodels and mapping them onto the actors. DOWS also provides an efficient virtual real time simulation environment which integrates the coordination among actors by supporting time synchronization, simulation message transfer, and network fault detection. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.
