Billions of microblogs are generated from many social medias such as Twitter and Weibo. How to make new microblogs available to the search engine immediately is a critical and challenging problem. Most existing studies generally put all terms' posting list together when building index, which leads to low index update performance and high query latency. In addition, time is a key feature of microblogs, and most applications including event detection only need most recent data. In this paper, we design a distributed online index system for temporal microblog data, named LiveIndex, which can significantly reduce the time cost of queries with specific time range, such as queries in event tracing. Firstly, our index is organized as time Range Partitions to reduce update cost. Secondly, In every partition, a hash table is used to map each term's posting list to corresponding sub-partition. Finally, to further reduce the index cost, we adopt an index chain to merge terms with the same posting list. the experiments on the real dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed method.

Image analytics, biometrics access control, security, and surveillance applications utilize complex machine learning and computer vision algorithms, such as face detection and recognition. Speedup and accuracy are two important factors that need to be addressed in all such complex applications. Parallel computing breaks down the complex tasks into discrete fragments to be solved concurrently on multiple processors. the parallel computing procedure significantly reduces the execution time with improved speedup. this paper presents a parallel framework for object detection and recognition for a secure vehicle parking. the proposed framework is divided in to three steps: (1) vehicle detection at the parking entry junction, (2) driver's face detection, and (3) identification of driver's face from the huge database of stored facial images. On successful identification of authorized person, vehicle is allowed to enter in the parking-lot. the adaptive boosting algorithm is used for vehicle and face detection, while Eigenfaces based approach is employed for face recognition. Moreover, the scalability comparison of parallely executed driver face recognition algorithm indicates high speedup compared to serial execution. Furthermore, the results of the proposed framework reveal promising performance and encourage outcomes to be deployed in real-time at entrance/exits of the public/private vehicle parking areas.

the rise of distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks has posed a dire threat to cloud computing services in recent years. First, it is getting increasingly difficult to discriminate legitimate traffic from malicious traffic since both are legal at the application-protocol level. Second, DDoS attacks have tremendous impacts on virtual machine performance due to the over-subscribed sharing nature of a cloud data center. To prevent the most serious HTTP GET flooding attacks, we propose a meta-data based monitoring approach, in which the behavior of malicious HTTP requests is captured through real-time and big-data analysis. the proposed DDoS defense system can provide continued service to legitimate clients even when the attacking line-rate is as high as 9Gbps. An intelligent probe is first used to extract the meta-data about an HTTP connection, which can be thought of as (IP, URL) (Uniform Resource Locators). then, a real-time big-data analyzing technique is applied on top of the meta-data to identify the IP addresses whose HTTP request frequency significantly surpasses the norm. the blacklist, consisting of these IP addresses, is further aggregated, enabling inline devices (firewalls and load balancers) to apply rate-limiting rules to mitigate the attacks. Our findings show that the performance of the meta-data based detection system is one order of magnitude better than the previous approach.

Complex software systems often suffer from flaws arising either during the design or the development stages. In many cases due to the lack of formal underpinning it is difficult to assuredly define the model from which the system is generated. In our work, we investigated the suitability of mathematical situation theory as a formal foundation for a computer modelling language. this paper describes our empirical evaluation of this thesis in the real-time domain using Infon Lab, a tool based upon situation theory.

Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) describes a class of applications where traditional real-time control systems are enhanced by backbone services accessed via the mobile Internet. In order to implement MaaS, new architectures for multi-stage real-time systems with several layers of control loops have to be implemented. Using approaches such as analytic redundancy, hard real-time control loops are extended with software-defined sensors that deliver data with soft real-time semantics. We describe a real-time control experiment that has been implemented in our distributed Control Lab with four stages - an extended digital Carrera race track (D132), custom built sensor/actuator boards, a control PC, and an outer control loop established via web services - and present a timing analysis. Our architecture allows for decoupling of hard real-time processing on embedded control units and soft real-time data acquisition on the outer layers.

Because of its high IO performance, Solid State Drives (SSDs) are playing an important role in cloud storage services. However, its ten times price of Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) makes it unaffordable for most companies to replace all traditional HDD storage with high performance SSD storage. Hybrid storage becomes a trade-off solution between relatively high performance and acceptable cost. In this paper, we propose an object-based hybrid storage system called WHOBBS to provide high-performance block storage for virtual machines in IaaS. WHOBBS introduces logical storage pools to manage different types of storage devices and splits VM disk images into the objects residing in different storage pools. WHOBBS will optimize the IO performance of the system by dynamic object migration, according to the periodically analyzed access patterns of all objects and the determined global object placement strategy. We evaluate WHOBBS under several benchmarks and demonstrate its efficiency and effectiveness.

Detecting emergent events and monitoring civil infrastructures in modern metropolitan cities by participatory sensing have recently been identified as a critical part of the public service management. With fast information distribution, multimedia messages (e.g., sound, images, videos, and texts) collected from citizens' smart devices can provide useful information to infer such emergencies by processing application level queries initialized from end terminals. this requires to establish an efficient, real-time processing systems for participatory sensing that can cope with both the dynamic queries and a variety of information with diverse attributes. To this end, in this paper, we first design a distributed and real-time query framework for event-based stream processing in participatory sensing, including a Storm-based real-time query engine, a messaging queue on Kafka, and a data persistence module based on HBase. Second, a dynamic indexing division method that is aware of the change of query attributes and volume is proposed. third, we implement an application for civil infrastructure monitoring, and finally we evaluate the performance of proposed framework compared with existing approaches, simulation results of which show its advantages.

Cloud-based file systems are widely accepted and adopted for personal and business purposes in recent years. Statistics shows that approximately 25% of file operations from a typical user are random writes. Inherited from traditional disk-based file systems, most distributed file systems are also based on objects or chunks of fixed sizes, which work well for sequential writes but poorly for random writes. this paper investigates the design paradigm of variable-sized objects for a distributed file system. A novel distributed file system named VarFS, is presented to incorporate variable object indexing and support random write operations. VarFS reduces the amount of unnecessary data being read and the number of objects modified in face of updates and consequently alleviates the total amount of data transferred. the implementation is based on Ceph and the performance measurements show that it can achieve 1-2 orders of magnitude less latency than Ceph on random writes. At the same time the overhead for initial writes and re-writes is acceptable.

Hadoop YARN is evolving to become the de-facto standard that allows multiple data processing engines such as interactive SQL, real-time streaming, data science and batch processing to handle data stored in a single platform. And, there are lots of researches about efficiently managing cluster resources and scheduling parallel jobs over YARN clusters. However, the scheduling of sub-tasks derived from one application doesn't receive enough attention, which still managed by independent data processing engines on YARN. In this paper, we analyze the limitation of sub-task scheduling algorithms of popular data processing engines running on YARN, including MapReduce 2.0, Spark then, we propose Millipedes: a distributed & set-based sub-task scheduling framework. In Millipedes, YARN's application master dispatches a set of sub tasks to data nodes, and then the local task scheduler of each data node schedules the execution of these sub tasks according to real-time dynamic resource usage.
