We are developing a web based application for use by diabetes patients to manage their chronic condition. the application will allow patients to keep abreast of the latest developments as pertinent to their specific condition (type, risk factors, medication, history, preferences, etc.), interact with others in a community of users, and have more effective dialog with their health care providers. this paper will document our recent developmental efforts to incorporate semantic web concepts and health information technology infrastructure.

this study investigates the conditions under which graphical information can support reading comprehension in a second language. this paper presents results of an experimental study in which reading comprehension of foreign students in two different environments was compared: vocabulary learning only vs. vocabulary and grammar plus graphic tasks. the results indicate that tasks decreasing grammatical complexities were more effective than lexical practices.

Due to the lack of word boundaries in Asian systems of writing, machine processing of these languages often, involves segmenting text into word units. this paper tests the assumption that this segmentation is a necessary step for authorship attribution and topic classification tasks in Chinese, and demonstrates that it is not. We show extensive results for both tasks, considering both single words and short phrases as features, and examining the effect of document length on classification accuracy. Our experiments show that a naive character bigram model of text performs as well as models generated using a state-of-the-art automatic segmenter.

this work presents a brief review of the concepts of Adaptive Automata, detailing its mechanism of operation and main fields of application, highlighting the great potential of use in the field of natural language processing. Also, it is proposed Linguistico, an adaptive parser for Brazilian Portuguese, designed to dynamically modify its configuration, being able to insert and delete rules and change its behavior during execution. the effectiveness of the proposed framework is experimentally proven and the results obtained are comparable to the state of the art. this paper describes the Speech Application language Tags, or SALT, an emerging spoken language interface standard for multimodal or speech-only applications. A key premise in SALT design is speech-enabled user interface shares a lot of the design principles and computational requirements with the graphical user interface (GUI). As a result, it is logical to introduce into speech the object-oriented, event-driven model that is known to be flexible and powerful enough in meeting the requirements for realizing sophisticated GUIs. It is hopeful that reusing this rich infrastructure can enable dialog designers to focus more on the core user interface design issues than on the computer and software engineering details. the paper centers the discussion on the web-based distributed computing environment and elaborates how SALT can be used to implement multimodal dialog systems. How advanced dialog effects (e.g., cross-modality reference resolution, implicit confirmation, multimedia synchronization) can be realized in SALT is also discussed.

Question classification is the key element of question answering system(QA). It governs answer extraction range and method, and further affects entire system performance. Most question classification methods are based on pattern sets or knowledge databases. their disadvantages are that the set or database scale will become larger more and more, and need much human work. By comparing question classification with document classification, and analyzing Chinese question sentences' characters, this paper proposes a new question classification computation model, which is based on Bayes theory and takes the relations between question structures and question types into account. Experiments show that in this model, feature vector extension can reduce the negative influences of shorter question sentences and smaller corpora;and interrogative-based 2-gram can make use of question structure features to efficiently improve question classification precision.

Discourse parsing is the process of discovering the latent relational structure of a long form piece of text and remains a significant open challenge. One of the most difficult tasks in discourse parsing is the classification of implicit discourse relations. Most state-of-the-art systems do not leverage the great volume of unlabeled text available on the web-they rely instead on human annotated training data. By incorporating a mixture of labeled and unlabeled data, we are able to improve relation classification accuracy, reduce the need for annotated data, while still retaining the capacity to use labeled data to ensure that specific desired relations are learned. We achieve this using a latent variable model that is trained in a reduced dimensionality subspace using spectral methods. Our approach achieves an F-1 score of 0.485 on the implicit relation labeling task for the Penn Discourse Treebank.

Legacy information search systems have limitation that it does not consider semantic information but just lexical information such as keywords. A semantic web is expected to solve such limitation of present systems. In constructing semantic web, an ontology is believed to be a must. However, the ontology construction is very difficult. It requires great human efforts, since the creation of individuals is a time consuming task. thus, there is a potential need for automatic or semiautomatic ontology population system, which greatly alleviates the human efforts. this paper proposes a method for an ontology population, in which the population is processed by computing the overlap between instances and concepts. this method is very simple but shows high performance.

Large corpora are essential to modern methods of computational linguistics and natural language processing. In this paper, we describe an ongoing project whose aim is to build a largest corpus of Czech texts. We are building the corpus from Czech Internet web pages, using (and, if needed, developing) advanced downloading, cleaning and automatic linguistic processing tools. Our concern is to keep the whole process language independent and thus applicable also for building web corpora of other languages. In the paper, we briefly describe the crawling, cleaning, and part-of-speech tagging procedures. Using a prototype corpus, we provide a comparison with a current corpora (in particular, SYN2005, part of the Czech National Corpora). We analyse part-of-speech tag distribution, OOV word ratio, average sentence length and Spearman rank correlation coefficient of the distance of ranks of 500 most frequent words. Our results show that our prototype corpus is now quite homogenous. the challenging task is to find a way to decrease the homogeneity of the text while keeping the high quality of the data.
