We address the problem of assigning each query word an appropriate weight in the retrieval function. Term weight assignment is important, which depends on the relationship among the query words and also impacts the retrieval performance directly. However, various retrieval models can be adopted by the system, which requires different approaches to set term weight and those empirical settings can not ensure to improve the retrieval quality. We propose an unified approach for different retrieval functions to set a unique weight to each individual word. We explore the popular retrieval functions and propose to regard the retrieval function as a linear classification model, which is aimed to predicate the relevance of the document. thus the parameters in the learning model can be explained as the term weight in the retrieval model. For each query topic, we adopt the generative model and the discriminative model to estimate the term weight by taking the relevance feedback information as the training data. Our analysis gives more insight into the Rocchio's framework on relevance feedback, which can be taken as a special case in the generative model. Experimental results on the benchmark datasets show that by estimating proper weight to each query word, our approach can outperform the baseline methods of BM25 and obtain an equivalent performance with the probability language model. © 2011 IEEE.

With the widespread use of Internet and the development of information technology, there is a tremendous amount of news information resource. the ability to quickly obtain useful resource from the huge news information is a crucial problem at present. Based on the analysis of the structure of the news portal page, this paper combines the technology of regular expressions and HTML-Parser, introduces a general method of news and information automatically extracted, and realizes an efficient general news information extraction system. the system can not only extract the headlines, time released, text content rightly, but also can extract the news information relevant or similar to the subject. © 2011 IEEE.

this paper aims at a comparative analysis between accessing GIS using traditional visual interfaces and new ones, which involve a Natural language processing (NLP) approach that provides support for the interaction between users and the information system. Lately, GIS have been used at a very large scale;also, users of these systems are different in many aspects, like technical skills, interests, goals, base of knowledge, etc. Among GIS features the location systems play a big role for ITS. To optimize urban mobility it has become more and more crucial to be able to offer location based services very accurate and available even for not expert use. In this scenario NLP allows to use un-precise expressions and queries, of synonyms and qualitative expressions in a very simple way, proposing itself as a powerful interface enabler. the metrics defined and considered by the authors to be relevant, from the points of view mentioned above, are: accessibility (technical skills required), speed (time required to identify the desired results) and quality (human perception of mistakes and the standardization of the formulas used to perform the queries). Experiments are performed using a traditional GIS interface (ArcGIS) and a NLP based interface called ASQL and provided by the company lila. ilia's technology is being used for the project i-Tour which is developed under the 7th framework with the financial support of the CE. © 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

the task of topical classification of web queries is to classify web queries into a set of target categories. Machine learning based conventional approaches usually rely on external sources of information to obtain additional features for web queries and training data for target categories. Unfortunately, these approaches are known to suffer from inability to adapt to different target categories which may be caused by the dynamic changes observed in both web topic taxonomy and web content. In this paper, we propose a feature-free flexible approach to topical classification of web queries. Our approach analyzes queries and topical categories themselves and utilizes the number of web pages containing both a query and a category to determine their similarity. the most attractive feature of our approach is that it only utilizes the web page counts estimated by a search engine to provide the web query classification with respectable accuracy. We conduct experimental study on the effectiveness of our approach using a set of rank measures and show that our approach performs competitively to some popular state-of-the-art solutions which, however, make frequent use of external sources and are inherently insufficient in flexibility. © 2011 IEEE.

Ontology, the base of Semantic web, plays a vital role in knowledge representation and knowledge reasoning. there are many tools providing management interfaces to create, query and edit knowledge of ontology. However, most of them are still arduous time-consuming manual work. therefore, how to automatically construct ontology has attracted many researchers' attention. With the development of web, there is influent information we can take advantage of. According to the structure of web, An automatically construction method for domain-specific ontology is proposed. Firstly, some special web sites which have relatively structure or semi-structure are selected. then, web documents are clawed with Jsoap. Secondly, all contained knowledge is extracted and organized together to form the domain-specific ontology. Finally, the Jena platform is employed to create, delete, read, write ontology model in the form of RDF and query by SPARQL. the experimental results in "Entertainment" and "Sport" domain show concept hierarchy structures are reasonable with the overall precision of domain-specific ontology being up to 97%. © 2011 IEEE.

Prepositional phrase (PP) consists of two parts which are a preposition as the leading part and a word or phrase as the tail part. In accordance with this fact, this paper proposes a new approach for identifying PP. In this method, PP identification is transformed into the collocation identification of preposition itself and the right boundary word. the Cascaded Conditional Random Fields (CCRFs) is used in this approach. With the Penn Chinese Treebank 5.1 as our experiment corpus, the F1 rises to 94.63%. this approach obtains breakthrough in this specific field as the current F1 is about 8.6% higher than any publicly published paper. © 2011 IEEE.

Ontologies have served as a knowledge representation about the whole world or some part of it. Building ontologies is a challenging and active research area. Manually constructed Ontologies often have higher quality than the ones created by automatic or semi-automatic approaches but they tend to be more applicable to small domains. Automatic approaches are considered more suitable for building large scale Ontologies where time and efforts of human experts become a bottleneck. For both paradigms, approaches to building Ontologies from Vietnamese texts are still very limited. In this paper, we propose a system that automatically builds Ontology from Vietnamese texts using cascades of annotation-based grammars. Obtained experimental results on a university organizational structure domain are very promising. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a novel expansion terms selection model, in which similarity kernel function is used to estimate the relevance between query and candidate expansion terms. In previous method, expansion terms are usually selected by counting term co-occurrences in the documents. However, term co-occurrences are not always a good indicator for relevance, whereas some are background terms of the whole collection. In order to select good expansion terms, similarity kernel function is used in our model to estimate the relevance weight between query and its relevant term extracted from the top-ranked documents in initial retrieval results. the estimated relevance weights are used to select good expansion terms for second retrieval. the experiments on the two test collections show that our expansion terms selection model is more effective than the standard Rocchio expansion. © 2011 IEEE.

To achieve the corpus of Naxi - English bilingual words alignment, aim at syntactic characteristics of Naxi language. A Naxi-English bilingual words alignment method is proposed. this method uses the log-linear model, and introduces feature functions based on the characteristic of the Naxi language, which are English - Naxi interval switching function and Naxi - English bilingual words position transformation function. With the artificial labeling of Naxi - English words alignment corpus, the parameters of the model are trained by using the minimum error. the Naxi-English bilingual words are alignment automatically by this model. Experiments with IBM Model 3 as a benchmark, and gradually add constraints on the characteristics of the Naxi language with the basis of IBM Model 3. the final experiment results show that the Naxi - English bilingual word alignment accuracy can be improved significantly with the feature functions which are base on characteristic of Naxi. © 2011 IEEE.

People often feel the limitation of time to read the continuously increasing articles they need to read. It is a grand challenge to handle the explosion of articles. To understand how humans read articles and get the meaning is the basis of improving the efficiency of reading articles. the underlying semantic links between language units of different granularities reflect some basic semantics. Sentence is the basic language unit for accurately indicating semantics. By defining concepts and the dependent set of sentences, and constructing the semantic link network of dependent sentences and semantic link network of concepts, this paper proposes the textual semantic lens with a set of functions for helping people comprehend articles. Integrating with the semantic link networks of articles, the semantic lens can help people efficiently read large-scale articles. © 2011 IEEE.
