processing-in-memory (PIM) substrates can perform parallel computation directly within the memory array. As a result, throughput performance and energy efficiency can reach unprecedented levels, however, there are limitations. Typical PIM architectures only support parallel computing in one dimension of the memory array: Computation is performed along either multiple rows or multiple columns (but not both). this restricts data layout and makes intra-array intermediate data transfers during computation inevitable - which require reads and writes, even for short-distance data movement. Inter-array data transfers, on the other hand, become a problem for larger scale algorithms which use more than one PIM array. Such data transfers incur large communication overheads and increase the complexity of the peripheral circuitry and interconnection network between arrays. Intermediate data transfers of any form limit scalability and efficiency. To overcome this limitation, we introduce PimCity, a new PIM substrate which can compute in both the rows and the columns of the memory array. PimCity replaces intraarray data transfer (memory) operations with lower overhead logic operations inside the memory array. Further, PimCity can perform logic operations directly across neighboring memory arrays, which in turn enables low-cost inter-array data transfers. PimCity hence represents a scalable PIM architecture suitable for both HPC and embedded IoT style applications. © 2023 IEEE.

According to the traditional multi-dimensional FFT, memory layouts of high-dimensional data are discontinuous. Transposition is introduced to keep high-dimensional data continuous in memory. However, transposition increases memory access and is a hot spot for multi-dimensional FFT. this paper proposes an optimization framework to eliminate explicit transpositions and optimize the three-dimensional (3D) FFT. this framework includes three research points. 1) combines the width-first and breadth-first search to optimize the butterfly network of one-dimensional (1D) FFT;2) adopts a column-order algorithm to eliminate data transposition;3) adopts a blocking algorithm of cache-aware to better use the hardware resources of ARM architecture. Based on this optimized framework, a multi-dimensional FFT library named MDFFT is implemented. the experiments demonstrate that MDFFT generally performs better than FFTW and ARMPL on ARM CPUs. © 2021 IEEE.

On digital computers, the hue, saturation, and lightness (HSL) image model is especially useful in feature detection, image segmentation, and other operations in robot vision, object recognition, etc. On the quantum computing paradigm, such a model was only recently formulated and many new inroads with it are just beginning. Our study proposes a scheme to secure quantum images encoded using the quantum HSL (QHSL) image model. the proposed QHSL encryption scheme (or simply QHES) utilises logistic mapping to induce the chaotic system at the heart of the QHES strategy. the scheme consists of a quantum logistic chaos unit composed of quantum arithmetic modules to generate chaotic sequences. this is followed by a quantum logistic key generation that is subsequently used to encrypt the HSL components of QHSL images. the proposed scheme exploits quantum parallelism to execute its encryption procedure which leads to significant reduction in computational resources. Results of simulation-based experiments reported suggest potentials of the proposed QHES as an efficient cryptosystem on quantum computers. © 2021 IEEE.

With the rapid advance in information technology, we have witnessed the emergence of diverse promising Internet-of-things (IoT) applications, such as smart transportation, smart home, healthcare, and environmental monitoring. Due to parallel computing advantages, multicore systems are advocated as a good candidate hardware platform to accelerate the computation completion of IoT applications. However, the limited energy budgets and inherent openness characteristics of IoT scenarios pose fundamental challenges to the design of multicore systems. While making salutary attempts on improving the energy efficiency and augmenting the security level of IoT applications, most of the existing research works neglect the negative impacts of their optimization techniques on the lifetime of multicore platforms. Consequently, multicore systems potentially suffer from the earlier occurrence of permanent faults, i.e., have to be replaced in advance before the desired lifecycle ending point. In this paper, we conduct the first study on scheduling precedence constrained IoT applications depicted by directed acyclic graph (DAG) to minimize the energy consumption of multicore platforms under timing, security, and lifetime constraints. To address this problem, we first present a JADE-based offline algorithm to determine the optimal task-to-core allocation, task execution order, core operating frequency, as well as task security level. Following the offline algorithm, we then design a low-complexity dynamic algorithm to achieve extra energy savings by wisely adjusting core operating frequencies. Results reveal that our solution can reduce 41.48% energy consumption while meeting all design constraints compared to state-of-the-art schemes. © 2021 IEEE.

Backdoor attacks pose significant threats to Natural Language processing (NLP) models. Various backdoor defense methods for NLP models primarily function by identifying and subsequently manipulating backdoor triggers within provided samples. However, such methods predominantly operate at the level of data filtering, essentially failing to cleanse the affected model. To solve this problem, we present ELUDE—a groundbreaking method designed to excise the backdoor triggers embedded within the corrupted model. ELUDE’s architecture comprises two core components: the backdoor trigger identifier and the backdoor trigger remover, operating synergistically in a pipeline procedure. While the former employs a perplexity-based approach to locate the backdoor trigger, the latter eradicates the inserted backdoor’s influence on the tainted model using machine unlearning. To counteract the issue of catastrophic forgetting engendered by machine unlearning, we incorporate Elastic Weight Consolidation (EWC) within the backdoor trigger remover. Our experiments on SST-2, OLID, and AG News text classification datasets exemplify the efficacy of ELUDE, as comparative results indicate that ELUDE effectively reduces the success rate of three cutting-edge backdoor attack methods by an average of 60%—simultaneously maintaining comparable performance on the original task. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Nowadays, it is common in many disciplines and application fields to collect large volumes of data characterized by a high number of features. Such datasets are at the basis of modern applications of supervised Machine Learning, where the goal is to create a classifier for newly presented data. However, it is well known that the presence of irrelevant features in the dataset can lead to a harder learning phase and, above all, can produce suboptimal classifiers. For this reason, the ability to select an appropriate subset of the available features is becoming increasingly important. Traditionally, optimization metaheuristics have been used with success in the task of feature selection. However, many of the approaches presented in the literature are not applicable to datasets with thousands of features since common optimization algorithms often suffer from poor scalability with respect to the size of the search space. In this paper, the problem of feature subset optimization is successfully addressed by a cooperative coevolutionary algorithm based on Differential Evolution. In the proposed algorithm, parallelized for multi-threaded execution on shared-memory architectures, a suitable strategy for reducing the dimensionality of the search space and adapting the population size during the optimization results in a significant performance. A numerical investigation on some high-dimensional datasets show that, in most cases, the proposed approach can achieve smaller feature subsets and higher classification performance than other state-of-the-Art methods. © 2022 IEEE.

this research explores optimization strategies employed within ***, an advanced question generation system driven by natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) algorithms. the study delves into three pivotal areas of optimization: caching, parallel processing, and streamlining I/O operations. By implementing caching mechanisms using Python’s ***_cache, parallelization via *** and multiprocessing modules, and streamlining I/O operations through efficient batching and buffering techniques, significant enhancements in time and space complexity are realized. the effectiveness of these optimization approaches is empirically evaluated, showcasing their profound impact on the efficiency and scalability of the *** platform. this research contributes to the advancement of question generation systems, providing valuable insights into effective optimization strategies for NLP applications, such as question generation, semantic analysis, and language modeling.

the liquid level detection in a transparent bottle is the requirement in the food, Beverage industry, Scene understanding, Chemical Laboratories, and Forensic sciences. the liquid level detection indicates the quantity of the liquid in the bottle to assure customer satisfaction. the liquid level in a transparent container is an edge, a sudden change in intensity. the problem of liquid level detection is an image processing application of the Canny Edge Detector. the image data set is prepared using different sizes, transparency, color, and orientation as straight, landscape, and reverse. the transparent bottle classification accuracy rate is 87.5%, and the overall accuracy rate is 69.56%. the Serial and parallel algorithms are developed to improve the speed of execution. the multiprocessing and concurrent process pool of the multiprocessing approach found 4.6 times better turnaround execution time over synchronous pool map, concurrent thread pool, asynchronous thread pool, and serial execution. © 2022, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

With the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) services, smart devices generate a large amount of user data at the edge network, which urgently needs to be protected while effectively extracting information. Federated learning (FL) is an important technology for handling dispersed data and strict privacy requirements in this context. However, the security threats caused by model inversion attacks and poisoning attacks can affect the mutual trust between the client and server. Yet, for these two types of attacks, the existing defense mechanisms are contradictory in terms of whether the model parameters are publicly disclosed. In addition, the data distribution of the clients is imbalanced which will increase the bias of model, reducing its practicality. To address this issue, this study proposes a dual defense self-balanced federated learning (DDSFL) framework, aiming to introduce a novel lightweight defense mechanism during the model parameter aggregation stage, combating these two types of attacks simultaneously by applying differential privacy and adjusting learning rates. In addition, this method also integrates a middleware-based reordering algorithm to enhance the robustness of the framework. Experimental results show that DDSFL effectively improves the ability to resist imbalanced data, forged data, and malicious behavior, significantly enhancing the generalization performance and security of the FL system. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
