Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) has emerged as a revolutionary service platform, abstracting the complexities of hardware, operating systems, and web hosting services. this allows developers to focus solely on implementing their service applications, making FaaS an ideal platform for the scalable manipulation of large data sets. Traditionally deployed on the cloud, FaaS now faces a new frontier: the network edge. Leveraging the edge offers several potential benefits, including reduced latency and improved resource utilization, making it a promising approach for efficient FaaS deployment. As the daily volume and complexity of data we handle continues to grow, adopting a parallel computing paradigm has become increasingly important to ensure fast and efficient execution of computational tasks. Addressing this need, ComFaaS Distributed embarks on a comprehensive comparison of the capabilities of parallelized edge and cloud environments for FaaS deployment. Utilizing benchmark programs meticulously crafted to simulate event-triggered scenarios, ComFaaS Distributed aims to provide valuable insights into the performance and potential of FaaS at the edge, paving the way for a future where parallel computing empowers the efficient and scalable processing of ever-growing data volumes.

thread-throttling and mapping strategies have been used together to make better use of hardware resources and improve the energy-delay product (EDP) of high-performance computing (HPC) systems. However, the design space exploration significantly grows with the increasing number of cores in those systems, making the task of finding the ideal number of active threads and allocating strategy a challenging task. On top of that, parallel applications present various patterns, such as irregularity, unbalanced computations, or high rates of communications. Given these considerations, we propose ETTM, an EDP-aware thread-throttling and mapping optimization strategy that automatically finds an ideal combination of number of threads and thread mapping strategy. With the execution of eighteen well-known benchmarks on three multicore architectures, we show that EDP can be significantly improved when running applications with the solution found by EETM1 .

In healthcare, safeguarding patient data integrity is paramount, necessitating robust deep learning models. this research focuses on bolstering the cyber security defenses of these models, particularly against adversarial attacks, through the application of the Localized Adversarial Feature Attack (LAFEAT) technique. Leveraging Graphics processing Units (GPU) and the TensorFlow framework, the study explores algorithmic enhancements like the Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM) and Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning (MAML). these techniques perturb input data gradients or adapt model parameters, enhancing resilience against adversarial perturbations. Additionally, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), a metaheuristic optimization technique, is examined to fortify defense mechanisms further. parallel processing techniques, utilizing parallel GPU or distributed clusters, are implemented to expedite the optimization process, reducing computational burdens and enhancing scalability. Despite advancements, gaps remain in understanding how these models can be optimized for real-world healthcare applications, particularly in terms of balancing computational efficiency and robustness. the research demonstrates tangible benefits, with a significant 10% increase in success rates against adversarial attacks compared to baseline methods. Moreover, parallel processing implementation results in a 30% reduction in optimization time, improving the efficiency of cyber security defenses for deep learning models in healthcare. these numerical enhancements underscore the research’s value in fortifying healthcare systems against adversarial threats, ensuring the security and integrity of patient data while addressing existing gaps in the optimization of adversarial defenses in healthcare applications. the strengths of this research lie in its robust adversarial attack optimization techniques, integration of parallel processing for efficiency, and application to critical healthcare tasks. the stock market movement has the potential to tell the future worth of a company’s stock. the foresight of a stock’s future price is very crucial as it could yield significant profit. this paper has compared different modern machine learning models for predicting the direction of stock movement of a company for a given date. there has been the use of models that do not involve neural networks for training, as well as those that do, and their performance have been compared. It was found that neural networks by far bested the other methods in terms of validation accuracy, but not at execution time, despite the use of parallelism in both varieties of models. On the other hand, this paper has also explored the prospect of parallel web scraping and its variation of speed when parallelized on a variable number of cores, as well as the extraction of the sentiment of scraped data using pre-trained NLP modules, done in parallel. the authors of this paper tried to utilise the GPU environment provided, and successfully parallelised a subset of the models on the said environment. In this paper, we have separately trained models and scraped news sources from the Internet with the vision to marry the two and predict real-time stock movement based on news articles. Further, this proposed work has explored the prospect of applying the best model for prediction in a rudimentary demonstration of the same, in a real-world scenario. the ‘best model’ here refers to the model that produced the highest validation accuracy irrespective of whether parallelization was applied or not, and a very promising model based on BERT qualified for this, which produced a validation accuracy of 99.08%, and because the GPU acceleration reduced the training time from more than 6 h to less than 20 min. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Coarse-grained reconfigurable architectures (CGRAs) are programmable hardware platforms with coarse-grained programmable logic blocks and word-wide configurable interconnect. In this paper, we describe a high-level compilation framework tailored for CGRAs. the input to the framework is a C-language program and description of the available CG RA architectural features. this work primarily focuses on automatically handling sequential rectangular loop access patterns. It achieves this by running automated design space exploration (DSE) written within the MLIR compiler representation [7] to leverage both spatial and temporal parallelism inherent in CG RAs. Furthermore, the compiler is engineered to be architecture-agnostic. It employs standard loop (and other) compiler optimization passes alongside CG RA-specific passes to generate a data flow graph (DFG) tailored for a CG RA implementation. In an experimental study, we optimize kernels to increase CG RA mappability and show the impact of automated DSE on the kernel performance. Moreover, the framework eases the task of compilation from software to RISC-V+CGRA hybrid systems.

the use of drones can be a valuable solution for the problem of delivering goods for many reasons. In fact, they can be efficiently employed in time-critical situations when there is a traffic jam on the roads, to serve customers in hard-toreach places, or simply to expand the business. However, due to limited battery capacities and the fact that drones can serve a single customer at a time, a drone-based delivery system (DBDS) aims to minimize the drones' energy usage for completing a route from the depot to the customer and go back to the depot for new deliveries. In general, the shortest delivery route could not be the optimal choice since external factors like the wind (which varies with time) can affect energy consumption. Previous work has mainly considered simplified DBDSs assuming architectures with a single drone and with static costs on paths. Moreover, in these non-centralized architectures, the drones themselves compute the routes on the fly employing their onboard processing resources, making this choice costly. In this paper we develop a centralized system for computing energy-efficient time-varying routes for drones in a multi-depot multi-drone delivery system. Specifically, we propose a novel centralized parallel algorithm called parallel Shortest Route Update (PSRU) that, over time, updates the drones' delivery routes avoiding the whole recomputation from scratch. A comprehensive evaluation proves that PSRU is up to 4.5x faster than the state-of-the-art algorithms.

Patent data from various countries in the world implies the essence of scientific discovery and technological innovation of all human beings, but language differences have become a huge obstacle to patent data retrieval and communication. We hope to build a bridge from Chinese to English in the patent domain, so that English speakers can make better use of Chinese patent data. With the help of natural language processing technologies such as optical character recognition, Chinese text processing, machine translation and English text processing, we construct digital Chinese-English segment-aligned multi-field patent (CESMP) data from scanned Chinese patents. the current CESMP data consists of 610,310 patent documents in XML format. Each patent document contains six required fields (date, publication, ipc, title, abstract, and claim) and four optional fields (cpc, wipo, originalapplicant, and currentowner), among which the wipo, title, abstract, and claim fields are aligned with Chinese and English segments. Supported by well-structured bilingual patent data, on the one hand, the resource construction algorithms can efficiently build a bilingual patent dictionary and a parallel patent segment bank;on the other hand, the deep natural language processing algorithms can be effectively implemented into many practical intelligent applications such as cross-language patent retrieval, patent spam filtering, patent network analysis, patent machine translation, etc. © 2021 IEEE.

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping plays an integral role in the field of autonomous robotics for ensuring proper navigation and exploration in unknown environments. Applications of SLAM range from surveillance and monitoring to self driving cars or UAVs. the high computational complexity involved in simultaneously tracking the trajectory of the robot while constantly updating the surrounding map based on every scan observation is disadvantageous to the mainstream adoption of SLAM. With the advent of parallel computing and multicore architectures, serial programs and algorithms can be accelerated in terms of execution time and efficiency. this paper explores the effects of CPU thread parallelism on 2D LiDAR SLAM in an indoor environment. the recorded scans are matched and loop closure detection is performed. the final trajectory and mapping is finetuned with the help of pose graph optimization. the number of threads and CPU cores are varied to draw analysis of their effects on the serial algorithm. the simulated results show a performance increase and a decrease of 19.1% in execution time for the parallelized algorithm utilizing 4 CPUs, compared to its serial version. © 2021 IEEE.

Task-based systems have gained popularity as they promise to exploit the computational power of complex heterogeneous systems. A common programming model is the so-called Sequential Task Flow (STF) model, which, unfortunately, has the intrinsic limitation of supporting static task graphs only. this leads to potential submission overhead and to a static task graph not necessarily adapted for execution on heterogeneous systems. A standard approach is to find a trade-off between the granularity needed by accelerator devices and the one required by CPU cores to achieve performance. To address these problems, we extend the STF model of StarPU [5] to enable tasks subgraphs at runtime. We refer to these tasks as hierarchical tasks. this approach allows for a more dynamic task graph. Combined with an automatic data manager, it allows to dynamically adapt the granularity to meet the optimal size of the targeted computing resource. We show that the model is correct and we provide an early evaluation on shared memory heterogeneous systems, using the Chameleon [1] dense linear algebra library. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In the field of human action recognition (HAR), two-stream models have been widely employed. In recent years, traditional two-stream network models have disregarded the interframe sequence characteristics of video, resulting in a decrease in model robustness when local sequence information and long-term motion information interact. In light of this, a novel three-stream neural network is proposed by combining the long-term and short-term characteristics of a frame sequence with spatio-temporal information. Initially, the optical flow sequence image frames and RGB image frames in the video are extracted, the optical flow motion information and image space information in the video is obtained, the corresponding time network and space network are entered, and the spatial information is entered into the sequence feature processing network;the three networks are then pretrained. At the conclusion of training, the operation of feature extraction is executed, the features are incorporated with the parallel fusion algorithm by adding weights, and the behavior categories are classified using Multi-Layer Perception. Experimental results on the UCF11, UCF50, and HMDB51 datasets demonstrate that our model effectively integrates the spatial-temporal and frame-sequence information of human actions, resulting in a significant improvement in recognition accuracy. Its classification accuracy on the three datasets was 99.17%, 97.40%, and 96.88%, respectively, significantly enhancing the generalization capability and validity of conventional two-stream or three-stream models. © 2022 IEEE.
