parallel data platforms are recognized as a key solution for processing analytical queries running on extremely large data warehouses (DWs). Deploying a DW on such platforms requires efficient data partitioning and allocation techniques. Most of these techniques assume a priori knowledge of workload. To deal with their evolution, reactive strategies are mainly used. the BI 2.0 requirements have put large batch and ad-hoc user queries at the center. Consequently, reactive-based solutions for deploying a DW in parallel platforms are not sufficient. Autonomous computing has emerged as a paradigm that allows digital objects managing themselves in accordance with high-level guidance by the means of proactive approaches. Being inspired by this paradigm, we propose in this paper, a proactive approach based on a query clustering model to deploying a DW over a parallel platform. the query clustering triggers partitioning and allocation processes by considering only evolved query groups. Intensive experiments were conducted to show the efficiency of our proposal.

Machine learning is now the most recurrently used computational technique for clinical diagnosis. Many algorithms have been developed for the prediction and identification of various diseases at an early stage, which benefits in decreasing the mortality rate. Several studies indicate that even after the development of a vaccine, cervical cancer remains the prime cause of death in women when compared with other cancer types. Cancer risk predictions have been helpful for targeted screening and maximizing treatment gains. In this paper, a scalable tree boosting method, known as Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) has been used to achieve cervical cancer risk prediction. the tuned model uses regularization and handles missing data with its in-built sparse-aware and quantile algorithms. It also outperforms the available state-of-the-art machine learning models, through its parallel computational capabilities and distribution across clusters. the results enhance the chances of applying machine learning to identify the relevant disease predictors and thus become an important tool for early detection of cervical cancer.

Graphics processing units (GPUs) are widely used in the area of scientific computing. While GPUs provide much higher peak performance, efficient implementation of real applications on the GPU architectures is still a non-trivial task. It is crucial to realize efficient solution algorithms that can better utilize GPU architectures. this paper presents our efforts in parallelizing and optimizing LESAP, a CFD application for scramjet combustion simulation, on NVIDIA GPUs. the GPU parallelization is realized based on the CUDA programming model, with a data-parallel implicit time-marching method that is efficient on the GPU architecture. Furthermore, shared memory and redundant calculation are proposed to reduce memory access overhead during GPU computation, and data transfer between CPU and GPU is optimized by packing the data to be transferred. the experimental results show that the GPU version, when runs on four V100 GPUs, achieves a speedup of 11.26 times compared to the CPU version that runs on two 24-core Intel Skylake Gold 6240R CPUs. Excellent parallel scalability across multiple GPUs is also observed.

parallel software system testing is very difficult because the number of states expands sharply caused by parallel behaviors. In this paper, a testing sequence generation method is proposed, target at full covering tested behaviors and related behaviors over all execution paths. Because of state spaces of parallel software systems are often large, this paper focuses on the state space subgraph, contained all firing of tested and related behaviors, of system model. Firstly, the software system is modeled with Colored Petri Net (CPN), called system model (SM), and every tested behavior or related behavior is modeled also with CPN, called Behavior Model Unit (BMU). then, the method proposes mapping operation, intersection operation, and so on to finally realize the generation of test sequence. Practices show that this method is efficient, which could achieve full coverage.

Many optimization problems (especially nonsmooth ones) are typically solved by genetic, evolutionary, or metaheuristic-based algorithms. However, these genetic approaches and other related papers typically assume the existence of a neighborhood or successor-state function N(x), where x is a candidate state. the implementation of such a function can become arbitrarily complex in the field of combinatorial optimization. Many N(x) functions for a huge variety of different domainspecific problems have been developed in the past to solve this general problem. However, it has always been a great challenge to port or realize these functions on a massively-parallel architecture like a Graphics processing Unit (GPU). We present a GPU-based method called FANG that implements a generic and reusable N(x) for arbitrary domains in the field of combinatorial optimization. It can be customized to satisfy domainspecific requirements and leverages the underlying hardware in a fast and efficient way by construction. Moreover, our method has a high scalability with respect to the number of input states and the complexity of a single state. Measurements show significant performance improvements compared to traditional exploration approaches leveraging the CPU on our evaluation scenarios.

the paper considers scheduling on parallel machines under the constraint that some pairs of jobs cannot be processed concurrently. Each job has an associated weight, and all jobs have the same deadline. the objective is to maximise the total weight of on-time jobs. the problem is known to be strongly NP-hard in general. A polynomial-time algorithm for scheduling unit execution time jobs on two machines is proposed. the performance of a broad family of approximation algorithms for scheduling unit execution time jobs on more than two machines is analysed. For the case of arbitrary job processing times, two integer linear programming formulations are proposed and compared with two formulations known from the earlier literature. An iterated variable neighborhood search algorithm is also proposed and evaluated by means of computational experiments. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Aiming at the practical engineering application of video stylization, in this paper, a GPU-based video art stylization algorithm is proposed, and a real-time video art stylization rendering system is implemented. the four most common artistic styles including cartoon, oil painting, pencil painting and watercolor painting are realized in this system rapidly. Moreover, the system makes good use of the GPU’s parallel computing characteristics, transforms the video stylized rendering algorithm into the texture image rendering process, accelerates the time-consuming pixel traversal processing in parallel and avoids the loop processing of the traditional CPU. Experiments show that the four art styles achieved good results, and the system has a good interactive experience. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Deep Reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms recently still take a long time to train models in many applications. parallelization has the potential to improve the efficiency of DRL algorithms. In this paper, we propose an parallel approach (ParaA2C) for the popular Actor-Critic (AC) algorithms in DRL, to accelerate the training process. Our work considers the parallelization of the basic advantage actor critic (Serial-A2C) in AC algorithms. Specifically, we use multiple actor-learners to mitigate the strong correlation of data and the instability of updating, and finally reduce the training time. Note that we assign each actor-learner MPI process to a CPU core, in order to prevent resource contention between MPI processes, and make our ParaA2C approach more scalable. We demonstrate the effectiveness of ParaA2C by performing on Arcade Learning Environment (ALE) platform. Notably, our ParaA2C approach takes less than 10 min to train in some commonly used Atari games when using 512 CPU cores.

Skeletal parallelism is a model of parallelism where parallel constructs are provided to the programmer as usual patterns of parallel algorithms. High-level skeleton libraries often offer a global view of programs instead of the common Single Program Multiple Data view in parallel programming. A program is written as a sequential program but operates on parallel data structures. Most of the time, skeletons on a parallel data structure have counterparts on a sequential data structure. For example, the map function that applies a given function to all the elements of a sequential collection (e.g., a list) has a map skeleton counterpart that applies a sequential function to all the elements of a distributed collection. Two of the challenges a programmer faces when using a skeleton library that provides a wide variety of skeletons are: which are the skeletons to use, and how to compose them? these design decisions may have a large impact on the performance of the parallel programs. However, skeletons, especially when they do not mutate the data structure they operate on, but are rather implemented as pure functions, possess algebraic properties that allow to transform compositions of skeletons into more efficient compositions of skeletons. In this paper, we present such an automatic transformation framework for the Python skeleton library PySke and evaluate it on several example applications.

Graphics processing Units (GPUs) are widely spread nowadays due to their parallel processing capabilities. Leveraging these hardware features is particularly important for computationally expensive tasks and workloads. Prominent use cases are optimization problems and simulations that can be parallelized and tuned for these architectures. In the general domain of simulations (numerical and discrete), the overall logic is split into several components that are executed one after another. these components need step-size information which determines the number of steps (e.g. the elapsed time) they have to perform. Small step sizes are often required to ensure a valid simulation result with respect to precision and constraint correctness. Unfortunately, they are often the main bottleneck of the simulation. In this paper, we introduce a new and generic way of realizing high-performance simulations with multiple components using adaptive time steps on GPUs. Our method relies on a code-analysis phase that resolves data dependencies between different components. this knowledge is used to generate specially-tuned execution kernels that encapsulate the underlying component logic. An evaluation on our simulation benchmarks shows that we are able to considerably improve runtime performance compared to prior work.
