the deployment of Quantized Neural Networks (QNN) on advanced microcontrollers requires optimized software to exploit digital signal processing (DSP) extensions of modern instruction set architectures (ISA). As such, recent research proposed optimized libraries for QNNs (from 8-bit to 2-bit) such as CMSIS-NN and PULP-NN. this work presents an extension to the PULP-NN library targeting the acceleration of mixed-precision Deep Neural Networks, an emerging paradigm able to significantly shrink the memory footprint of deep neural networks with negligible accuracy loss. the library, composed of 27 kernels, one for each permutation of input feature maps, weights, and output feature maps precision (considering 8-bit, 4-bit and 2-bit), enables efficient inference of QNN on parallel ultra-low-power (PULP) clusters of RISC-V based processors, featuring the RV32IMCXpulpV2 ISA. the proposed solution, benchmarked on an 8-cores GAP-8 PULP cluster, reaches peak performance of 16 MACs/cycle on 8 cores, performing 21x to 25x faster than an STM32H7 (powered by an ARM Cortex M7 processor) with 15x to 21x better energy efficiency.

Digital signal processing on high-performance computing platform based on general-purpose processor is one of the development directions of software-defined radio, which provides a new idea for the signal combining of large-scale antenna array. In this paper, two parallel implementations of SUMPLE combined algorithm are proposed, which are multi-antenna-group method (MAGM) based on task decomposition principle and multi-signal-block method (MSBM) based on data decomposition principle. the processing capability and real-time performance of the two methods are analyzed in detail. Results show that MAGM is not suitable for the high-performance computing platform because of large and frequent data transmissions from central processing unit (CPU) to graphics processing unit (GPU). the traditional iterative method of SUMPLE cannot be applied to MSBM due to the dependencies among signal blocks.

Nowadays, high-performance computing (HPC) not only faces challenges to reach computing performance, it also has to take in consideration the energy consumption. In this context, heterogeneous architectures are expected to tackle this challenge by proposing a mix of HPC and low-power nodes. there is a significant research effort to define methods for exploiting such computing platforms and find a trade-off between computing performance and energy consumption. To this purpose, the topology of the application and the mapping of tasks onto physical resources are of major importance. In this paper we propose an iterative approach based on the exploration of logical topologies and mappings. these solutions are executed onto the heterogeneous platform and evaluated. Based on these results a Pareto front is built, allowing users to select the most relevant configurations of the application according to the current goals and constraints. Experiments have been conducted on a heterogeneous micro-server using a video processing application running on top of a software-distributed shared memory and deployed over a mix of Intel i7 and Arm Cortex A15 processors. Results show that some counterintuitive solutions found by the exploration approach perform better than classical configurations.

the article proposes consider the application of visual analysis of psychological testing results through the use of directed graph representations. It is proposed to consider the method of visual analysis by means of various representations based on the analysis of the number of connections between the elements of the system, considered as the basis for the formation of a directed graph. In the example considered in the article, it is proposed to consider the scales of the integrated test technique used as the vertices of the graph. As the main views, the application of calculating centrality properties based on the number of links, the topological structure of links, and the Page Rank parameter is demonstrated. It is proposed to use the method of visual analysis of the graph as an additional to the classical method of correlation analysis used in processing the results of the application of psychodiagnostic methods. the possibility of using visual analysis to form hypotheses about the possible optimization of the structure of the scales used in the design of psychodiagnostic techniques (test batteries) is shown. In parallel, the results of the analysis of the leadership qualities of such a category of specialists as software developers (members of development teams) are presented. © 2020 Copyright for this paper by its authors. Work-efficient task-parallel algorithms enforce ordering between tasks using queuing primitives. Such algorithms offer limited parallelism due to queuing constraints that result in data movement and synchronization bottlenecks. Speculatively relaxing order of tasks across cores using the Galois framework shows promise as false dependencies generated by strict queuing constraints are mitigated to unlock task parallelism. However, relaxed ordering results in redundant work, for which Galois relies on static measures to improve work-efficiency. this paper proposes a dynamic multi-level parent-child task dependency checking mechanism in Galois to prune redundant work by exploiting monotonic properties of shared data values. Evaluation on a 40-core Intel Xeon multicore shows an average of 2x performance improvements over state-of-the-art ordered and relax ordered graph algorithms.

this paper addresses a semantic stream processing pipeline, including data collection, semantic annotation, RDF data storage and query processing. We investigate whether the semantic annotation step could be moved on the edge, by designing and evaluating two alternative processing architectures. Experiments show that the edge processing fulfills the low-latency requirement, facilitating the parallel processing of the semantic enrichment for the sensor data. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this paper we present a parallel version for the algorithm BFQzip, we introduced in [Guerrini et al., BIOSTEC – BIOINFORMATICS 2022], that modifies the bases and quality scores components taking into account both information at the same time, while preserving variant calling. the resulting FASTQ file achieves better compression than the original data. Here, we introduce a strategy that splits the FASTQ file into t blocks and processes them in parallel independently by using the BFQzip algorithm. the resulting blocks with the modified bases and smoothed qualities are merged (in order) and compressed. We show that our strategy can improve the compression ratio of large FASTQ files by taking advantage of the redundancy of reads. When splitting into blocks, the reads belonging to the same portion of the genome could end up in different blocks. therefore, we analyze how reordering reads before splitting the input FASTQ can improve the compression ratio as the number of threads increases. We also propose a paired-end mode that allows to exploit the paired-end information by processing blocks of FASTQ files in pairs. Digital Image processing (DIP) is a growing field for various applications, such as autonomous vehicles and video surveillance. To improve the performance of DIP systems, image processing algorithms are implemented in hardware rather than software. the idea here is primarily to get a faster system than software imaging or other alternative hardware. Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have the advantages of parallel processing, low cost, and low power consumption. these semiconductor devices contain many logic blocks that can be programmed to perform everything from basic digital gate-level technology to complex image processing algorithms. this paper provides an enhancement pipeline system architecture using AXI interface to implement image processing algorithms such as Sobel edge detection and mean filters on the Zybo z7 Zynq 7010 board using Verilog HDL language. the system is implemented in a 512×512 image that takes 0.009ms in the processing system.

Population-based search algorithms, such as the Differential Evolution approach, evolve a pool of candidate solutions during the optimization process and are suitable for massively parallel architectures promoted by the use of GPUs. Hence, this paper proposes a GPU-based self-adaptive Differential Evolution employing the jDE mechanism to control its parameters, named cujDE. Two CUDA structures are employed to model the kernel functions in cujDE. the proposed algorithm is compared with another GPU-based self-adaptive DE (cuSaDE) in four continuous unconstrained benchmark functions. Also, the speedup between the CPU-based and the GPU-based jDE is measured. Results obtained suggest that the proposed approach is well suited to and competitive for continuous optimization. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

To cope with the rapid growth in available data, the efficiency of data analysis and machine learning libraries has recently received increased attention. Although great advancements have been made in traditional array-based computations, most are limited by the resources available on a single computation node. Consequently, novel approaches must be made to exploit distributed resources, e.g. distributed memory architectures. To this end, we introduce IleAT, an array-based numerical programming framework for large-scale parallel processing with an easy-to-use NumPy-like API. HeAT utilizes PyTorch as a node-local eager execution engine and distributes the workload on arbitrarily large high-performance computing systems via MPI. It provides both low-level array computations, as well as assorted higher-level algorithms. With HeAT, it is possible for a NumPy user to take full advantage of their available resources, significantly I owering the bartier to distributed data analysis. When compared to similar frameworks, HeAT achieves speedups of up to two orders of magnitude.
