We describe initial work on an extension of the Kaldi toolkit that supports weighted finite-state transducer (WFST) decoding on Graphics processing Units (GPUs). We implement token recombination as an atomic GPU operation in order to fully parallelize the Viterbi beam search, and propose a dynamic load balancing strategy for more efficient token passing scheduling among GPU threads. We also redesign the exact lattice generation and lattice pruning algorithms for better utilization of the GPUs. Experiments on the Switchboard corpus show that the proposed method achieves identical 1-best results. and lattice quality in recognition and confidence measure tasks, while running 3 to 15 times faster than the single process Kaldi decoder. the above results are reported on different GPU architectures. Additionally we obtain a 46-fold speedup with sequence parallelism and multi-process service (MPS) in GPU.

As CPU processing speed has slowed down year-on-year, heterogeneous "CPU-GPU" architectures combining multi-core CPU and GPU accelerators have become increasingly attractive. Under this backdrop, the Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) standard was released in 2012. New Accelerated processing Unit (APU) architectures – AMD Kaveri and Carrizo – were released in 2014 and 2015 respectively, and are compliant with HSA. these architectures incorporate two technologies central to HSA, hUMA (heterogeneous Unified Memory Access) and hQ (heterogeneous Queuing). this paper realizes radix sort and matrix-vector multiplication – two data-parallel applications on Kaveri platform. By analyzing the performance, a dynamic task scheduling stratgy is proposed. the experimental results show that the running efficiency of algorithm can be greatly improved by using APU with reasonable task scheduling. In the same way, the other data-parallel algorithm would also be optimized on these heterogeneous multi-core architecture. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

VASP (Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package) is a prevalent first-principle software framework. It is so widely used that its runtime usually dominates the usage of current supercomputers. the porting and optimization of VASP to the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer, a newly heterogeneous many-core platform based on SW26010 CPU, becomes of great importance. In this paper, we focus on the challenges in porting and optimizing VASP on the SW26010 CPU. Optimizations on three types of time-consuming kernels, which include matrix operations, FFT, and certain domain-specific computing primitives, are carried out base on thorough performance profiling. the experimental results are shown by the case of RELAX, where speedup of 2.90x and 4.48x is sustained respectively for both of the iterative diagonalization methods in VASP, RMM-DIIS (RMM) and block Davidson (DAV). © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

Dependency parsing is an important NLP task. A popular approach for dependency parsing is structured perceptron. Still, graph-based dependency parsing has the time complexity of O(n(3)), and it suffers from slow training. To deal with this problem, we propose a parallel algorithm called parallel perceptron. the parallel algorithm can make full use of a multi-core computer which saves a lot of training time. Based on experiments we observe that dependency parsing with parallel perceptron can achieve 8-fold faster training speed than traditional structured perceptron methods when using 10 threads, and with no loss at all in accuracy.

Automatic systolic array generation has long been an interesting topic due to the need to reduce the lengthy development cycles of manual designs. Existing automatic systolic array generation approach builds dependency graphs from algorithms, and iteratively maps computation nodes in the graph into processing elements (PEs) with time stamps that specify the sequences of nodes that operate within the PE. there are a number of previous works that implemented the idea and generated designs for ASICs. However, all of these works relied on human intervention and usually generated inferior designs compared to manual designs. In this work, we present our ongoing compilation framework named PolySA which leverages the power of the polyhedral model to achieve the end-to-end compilation for systolic array architecture on FPGAs. PolySA is the first fully automated compilation framework for generating high-performance systolic array architectures on the FPGA leveraging recent advances in high-level synthesis. We demonstrate PolySA on two key applications matrix multiplication and convolutional neural network. PolySA is able to generate optimal designs within one hour with performance comparable to state-of-the-art manual designs.

Task based parallel programming has shown competitive outcomes in many aspects of parallel programming such as efficiency, performance, productivity and scalability. Different approaches are used by different software development frameworks to provide these outcomes to the programmer, while making the underlying hardware architecture transparent to her. However, since programs are not portable between these frameworks, using one framework or the other is still a vital decision by the programmer whose concerns are expandability, adaptivity, maintainability and interoperability of the programs. In this work, we propose a unified programming interface that a programmer can use for working with different task based parallel frameworks transparently. In this approach we abstract the common concepts of task based parallel programming and provide them to the programmer in a single programming interface uniformly for all frameworks. We have tested the interface by running programs which implement matrix operations within frameworks that are optimized for shared and distributed memory architectures and accelerators, while the cooperation between frameworks is configured externally with no need to modify the programs. Further possible extensions of the interface and future potential research are also described.

Since the introduction of pregel by Google, several largescale graph-processing systems have been introduced. these systems are based on the bulk synchronous parallel model or other similar models and use various strategies to optimize system performance. For example, Mizan monitors the workload of each worker to determine whether the workload between the workers is balanced with respect to the execution time. If the workload is unbalanced among workers, Mizan migrates nodes from overloaded workers to underloaded workers to balance the load among workers and minimize the total execution time. On the basis of Mizan's migration plan, we implement a graph-processing system called GPSer with an efficient re-partitioning graph scheme. Our system uses statistical tools, e.g., coefficient of variation and correlation coefficient, to modify the migration plan and determine whether the workloads are balanced among all workers. Our system can accurately monitor current workloads and decide whether to migrate nodes among workers to balance the load. When imbalance arises, the workload of all workers can quickly converge to a balanced state, thereby enhancing the system performance. In experiment our system outperforms the state-of-the-art dynamic load-balancing graph processing-system, such as Mizan.

Multi-objective optimization is a powerful tool that has been successfully applied to many fields but has seen minimal use in the design and development of nuclear power plant systems. When applied to design, multi-objective optimization involves the manipulation of key design parameters in order to develop optimal designs. these design parameters include continuous and/or discrete variables and represent the physical design specifications. they are modified across a specific design space to accomplish a number of set objective functions, representing the goals for both system design and performance, which conflict and cannot be combined into a single objective function. In this paper, a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA) and parallel processing in Python 3 were used to optimize the design of the passive endothermic reaction cooling system (PERCS) model developed in RELAP5/MOD 3.3. this system has been proposed as a retrofit to currently operating light water reactors (LWR) and is designed to remove decay heat from the reactor core via the endothermic decomposition of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) and natural circulation of the reactor coolant. the PERCS design is currently a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, with the coolant flowing through the tube side and MgCO3 on the shell side. During a station blackout (SBO), the PERCS initially keeps the reactor core outlet temperature from exceeding 635 K and then reduces it to below 620 K for 30 days. the optimization of the PERCS was performed with three different objectives: (1) minimization of equipment costs, (2) minimization of deviation of the core outlet temperature during a SBO from its normal operation steady-state value, and (3) minimization of fractional consumption of MgCO3, a metric that is measurable and directly related to the operating time of the PERCS. the manipulated parameters of the optimization include the radius of the PERCS shell, the pitch, hydraulic diameter, thickness and length of the PER

With the rapid development of geospatial sensor technologies in recent years, the acquisition of higher resolution of spatial and temporal data is becoming common, resulting in an explosive increase in the volume of geospatial data. Meanwhile, the sophistication and complexity of geospatial algorithms is also increasing. the current geospatial applications often have limited capabilities in dealing with the trend. In this paper, we proposed a Spark-based parallel framework for geospatial raster data processing. the framework provides a parallel processing way for both a single high-resolution remote sensing image with large size using a RsImage model and multiple remote sensing images with small size using a RsBundleImage model. Taking the edge extraction from remote sensing images as an example, the paper demonstrates how the framework can improve the efficiency of the Canny edge detector by achieving the ratio of speedup up to 7.0~8.0.
