this paper presents a novel idea of talking to a computer in a simple and reduced language capable of expressing and recognizing emotions. the language is applied to capture the emotion in speech of a game player and its corresponding emotive response from the non-player-character (NPC). this paper outlines the process of cognitive response from the NPC.

A hybrid sentence ordering strategy in multi-document summarzation

In extractive summarization, a proper arrangement of extracted sentences must be found if we want to generate a logical, coherent and readable summary. this issue is special in multi-document summarization. In this paper, several existing methods each of which generate a reference relation are combined through linear combination of the resulting relations. We use 4 types of relationships between sentences (chronological relation, positional relation, topical relation and dependent relation) to build a graph model where the vertices are sentences and edges are weighed relationships of the 4 types. And then apply a variation of page rank to get the ordering of sentences for multidocument summaries. We tested our hybrid model with two automatic methods: distance to manual ordering and ROUGE score. Evaluation results show a significant improvement of the ordering over strategies losing some relations. the results also indicate that this hybrid model is robust for articles with different genre which were used on DUC2004 and DUC2005. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Knowledge Maps as knowledge-management-tools support individual learning processes by processing relevant knowledge and information and by making it available, searchable and usable. thus, Knowledge Maps can serve as a learning platform by the active work with, e.g. expert information addressed in direct bilateral exchanges or project-oriented documents. In this case knowledge is not a static supply of interlocked learning processes, but is continuously generated and associated with the actors. the paper is based upon the project WeKnow funded by the EU Socrates Programme in the field of information and Communication technology and Open and Distance Learning in education. the project seeks to develop a Web-based Knowledge Map as an educational competence-based learning environment.

Utilizing of speech recognizers as pronunciation evaluator is discussed in this work. the main reason is to put application of speech technology in assisting Indonesian learning as a part of on-going open learning environment. With the advanced technology of speech recognizers, the possibilities of applications become wider. Dealing with isolated word recognizer and medium-sized database, evaluation of pronunciation of learners based on prosody information is the objective. Two kinds of word set from non-native speakers are used to evaluate automatic pronunciation recognizer: mispronunciation by mistake and those by linguistical inheritance. the quality of evaluation is confirmed by human judgment. In addition, what kinds of mispronunciation they would do in Indonesian is also investigated. Herein it explores the possibility of using a hidden Markov model HTK tools recognizer and of obtaining correct prosody information in order to implement it in a system to aid in Indonesian language learning as L2.

Due to the limited number of classroom activities on pronunciation, it is difficult for L2 learners to acquire the proper pronunciation of Japanese words. Moreover, because of the practical restrictions of classroom learning, the only way to improve learning efficiency is to automate utterance learning. However, the conventional self-learning method of pronunciation is inferior to the method in which instructions are provided by a teacher because the former does not include the aspect of feedback. In order to eliminate these shortcomings of the conventional teaching methodology, the Japanese e-Learning utterance training system was developed. Since this system adopts a self-learning style, it might improve the time and lack of teaching material restrictions of the classroom method. Further, this system incorporates the benefits of the classroom system by providing relevant feedback to the learner. this system was used on a trial basis at the international Student Center of Kumamoto University (ISCKU). In this paper, we discuss the problems that were identified during this trial test and accordingly propose relevant solutions.

Online data integration is a process of continuous consolidation of data transmitted over the wide area networks with data already stored at a central site of a multidatabase system. the continuity of the process requires activation of data integration procedure each time a new portion of data is received at a central site. Efficient implementation of online data integration needs a new system of elementary operations on the increments and/or decrements of data and the intermediate results of integration. this work shows how to derive a new system of elementary operations for online data integration from a system of base operations on the data containers. In particular, we define a new system of online operations based on the system of binary operations of relational algebra. the paper analyses the properties of the new system and describes the transformations of global data integration expressions into the collections of online data integration plans. It is presented how the system can be used for the comprehensive analysis and optimization of online data integration plans. the optimization techniques described in the paper include reduction of input data increments, identification and elimination of intermediate materializations, and reduction of fixed size arguments in online data integration plans

We address the need for robust detection of obstructed human features in complex environments, with a focus on intelligent surgical UIs. In our setup, real-time detection is used to find features without the help of local (spatial or temporal) information. Such a detector is used to validate, correct or reject the output of the visual feature tracking, which is locally more robust, but drifts over time. In operating rooms (OR), surgeon faces are typically obstructed by sterile clothing and tools, making statistical and/or feature-based face detection approaches ineffective. We propose a new method for face detection that relies on geometric information from disparity maps, locally refined by color processing. We have applied our method to a surgical mock-up scene, as well as to images gathered during real surgery. Running in a real-time, continuous detection loop, our detector successfully found 99% of target heads (0.1% false positive) in our simulated setup, and 98% of target heads (0.5% false positive) in the surgical theater

Computational issues related to streaming data, and in particular the monitoring and rapid correlation of multiple sources of streaming data, are becoming increasingly important in contexts ranging from business processes to crisis detection. For example, a government system to detect bioterror attacks must correlate multiple streams of possibly low-confidence data from sensors and local and national public health information networks with cues from indicators such as news and government sources indicating geographical locations, tactics and timing of possible attacks. the results of this correlation trigger appropriate responses, such as flagging information for more in-depth analysis or sending alerts to public health officials. Monitoring and correlation applications of this type are ideal for deployment on distributed computing grids, because they have high transaction throughput, require low latency, and can be partitioned into sets of small communicating computations with regular communication patterns. An important consideration in these applications is the need to ensure that, at any given time, computations are carried out on an accurate - or at least close to accurate - picture of the environment being monitored. One way of doing this, which we call snapshot processing, is to treat collections of events that occur at approximately the same time as representing a global snapshot - a valid state - of the environment. Computation on the resulting series of snapshots is much like computation on a real-time video of the entire environment. We briefly describe our model for these stream processing computations and introduce the concept of snapshot processing

In the processing and applying of the digital map, it is one of the key technologies that aligning the maps from different projective coordinate systems to a standard. Using the principium of geometric correction, the paper compared and analyzed three correction models of the raster map, presented the idea of correcting the maps of different scale with corresponsive correction models, and citing a map of certain scale, the author compared the correction effects and errors of three models by programming and proved the accuracy and feasibility of this idea.
