this special issue includes a selection of the artefacts presented at the 18thinternational Federated conference on distributed Computing Techniques (DiScoTec 2023), held at the NOVA University Lisbon (Lisbon, Portugal), in June 18-23, 2023. the federated conference included: COORDINATION 2023, the 25thinternationalconference on Coordination Models and Languages);DAIS 2023, the 23rd internationalconference on distributedapplications and interoperablesystems;and FORTE 2023, the 43rd internationalconference on Formal Techniques for distributed Objects, Components, and systems. All the three conferences welcomed submissions describing technological artefacts, including innovative prototypes supporting the modelling, development, analysis, simulation, or testing of systems in the broad spectrum of distributed computing subjects. the artefact evaluation chairs have selected a subset of high- quality accepted artefacts to be invited for submission to this special issue. Following the revision process, nine artefacts have been accepted to be part of this special issue. the published contributions include different types of artefacts, including programming libraries, frameworks, as well as tools for the analysis, verification, and simulation of distributedsystems.

the measured output current data of distributed energy resources is crucial in realizing cyber-physical DC microgrids (DCMG) and achieving distributed control objectives. this paper proposes an artificial neural network-based output current estimation at the secondary control level. the estimated output current value is used to implement distributed control successfully for the DCMG. the proposed artificial neural network (ANN) acts as a virtual sensor to alleviate problems associated with physical sensors, such as faults and biasing effects. the ANN's input features and training performance are detailed for the considered DCMG. the performance of the proposed virtual sensor-based distributed controlled DCMG is validated on an experimental hardware setup under multiple load changes and communication delays.

this paper examines the equilibrium between user transaction fees and miner profitability within proof-of-work-based blockchains, specifically focusing on Bitcoin. We analyze the dependency of mining profit on factors such as transaction fee adjustments and operational costs, particularly electricity. By applying a multidimensional profitability model and performing a sensitivity analysis, we evaluate the potential for profit maximization through operational cost reduction versus fee increases. Our model integrates variable electricity costs, market-driven Bitcoin prices, mining hardware efficiency, network hash rate, and transaction fee elasticity. We show that mining strategies aimed at reducing electricity expenses are far more profitable than pursuing transactions with higher fees.

the ability to monitor and steer the behaviour of complex distributedsystems is an increasingly hot research topic, fostered by the growing adoption of hybrid cloud-edge technologies that constitute a computational continuum. One key feature of these systems is the ability to scale in size, embracing a wide number of heterogeneous devices and applications. this complexity, in turn, impacts the monitoring and control systemsthat need, at the same time, to be able to deal with high complexity and computational load and be available on all kinds of devices. In this paper, we introduce an architecture that allows for shifting the computational load of monitor systems at runtime across different devices in the cloud-edge continuum. We show the feasibility of the proposed approach by providing a reference implementation integrated with an existing simulation platform, leveraging Kotlin multiplatform to allow interoperability among different runtimes.

this paper introduces an innovative low-cost approach to real-time range synchronization, tailored to meet the demands of time-sensitive safety-critical applications. Traditionally, safety-critical applications such as rocket launches rely on dedicated range time synchronization protocols like IRIG-B to achieve precise time synchronization of distributedsystems within the range. However, Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) solutions for IRIG synchronization are often prohibitively expensive. In this study, we present a feasibility analysis to implement the IRIG-B protocol on a low-cost embedded solution that fulfills all the requirements of the aerospace industry. Our solution utilizes the Programmable Real-Time Units embedded within the BeagleBone Black as a cost-effective means to precisely implement the IRIG-B protocol. the implementation comprises a Demodulator module, a BeagleBone PRU-based decoder module, a Triple Modular Redundant logic for optimal IRIG input selection from three independent IRIG chains, and a UDP protocol for precise time synchronization of different subsystems within the range. the results of our study demonstrate compliance with aerospace industry requirements, and further ablation studies were conducted to ensure the reliability of our findings. this work enhances real-time range synchronization in aerospace applications by providing a practical and cost-effective solution for precisely synchronizing multiple subsystems within a range through a network-based protocol.
