Computer and computational scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) are studying and designing collaborative problem solving environments (CPSEs) for scientific computing in various domains. Where most scientific computing efforts focus at the level of the scientific codes, file systems, data archives, and networked computers, our analysis and design efforts are aimed at developing enabling technologies that are directly meaningful and relevant to domain scientist at the level of the practice and the science. We seek to characterize the nature of scientific problem solving and look for innovative ways to improve it. Moreover, we aim to glimpse beyond current systems and technical limitations to derive a design that expresses the scientist's own perspective on research activities, processes, and resources. the product of our analysis and design work is a conceptual scientific CPSE prototype that specifies a complete simulation and modeling user environment and a suite of high-level problem solving tools.

Commuting is a natural occurrence for many Filipinos, students, and workers alike. However, this comes along with a string of burdens., as public transport has always been an issue in the country., along with heavy traffic congestion., that truly affects the commuting life of many., and this only worsened with the pandemic. Even before then., several routes have already been maximized by the citizens to further the public transportation system we have., such as the Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue., or more commonly referred to as EDSA., which is the focus of this study. It aimed to give possible solutions to lessen the number of passengers at the bus stops located at the EDSA route. the researchers used an optimization model to arrive with a solution that will be able to maximize the reduced passenger capacity of public utility buses imposed by the General Community Quarantine guidelines released by the government. An Integer programming model was specifically utilized by the researchers to come up with the results. the results of the study showed that each of the bus stops may have different passenger capacity each day. Some have a big capacity., while others increasingly have a smaller capacity. Several measures such as recommending passengers to move to bus stops with larger capacities, or assigning traffic enforcers to strictly monitor bus stops to maximize the passenger capacity of each public utility bus and at the same time., remain safe during this time of pandemic are presented in this study.

With the rapid development of science and technology, the traditional distribution network has been unable to meet the energy needs of users, so the new integrated energy system with renewable energy come into being. In order to guarantee the reliability of power supply, it is of great significance to study the network reconfiguration after its failure. In the process of fault reconstruction, second-order cone relaxation technology can be used to solve the problems that the efficiency and stability of traditional distribution network fault reconstruction are not high, the solution result cannot be guaranteed to be the optimal solution, and the calculation time is long. therefore, this paper studies the fault reconstruction strategy of the power-gas interconnection integrated energy system based on the second-order cone relaxation technology. Firstly, the optimal power flow model is selected to minimize the loss load of power distribution network in the case of system failure. then, the constraint conditions of the power-gas interconnection system from electricity to gas and gas to electricity, and the constraint conditions of the safe operation of distribution network are established respectively. Secondly, the model was transformed by the second-order cone relaxation method, and solved by Gurobi commercial algorithm package, a second-order cone relaxation optimization tool. Finally, the stability and efficiency of the hybrid integer second-order cone programming method in solving the system fault reconstruction problem are verified by the analysis of the calculation results based on the example of IEEE33 node system.

the term “smart grid” describes the future generation of electrical power networks, which are very complicated systems. It must take into account all aspects of the electrical system, increasing its intelligence and adaptability. In response to shifts in the electrical market, this idea is put out with the intention of controlling the rising demand while guaranteeing higher service quality and enhanced safety. this research presents an urban scenario that incorporates dispersed energy sources into a smart grid. the research incorporates renewable energy sources like solar panels and tiny windmills into the system, as well as battery storage and grid-connected vehicles that can power the electrical grid by drawing electricity from the storage device. So, to maximize the energy production and absorption systems as well as the recharging and discharging time for a home user’s electric car, a mixed integer linear programming is proposed. Additionally, a number of case studies are provided by changing important variables using the Taguchi technique of design of experiments in order to identify the best solution and demonstrate how each influences the system’s complexity.

the railway sector is currently experiencing a rapid evolution from fully manual towards automatic rail traffic control systems, due to the growth of transport demand and networks complexity. One of the main issues is to automatically and effectively reschedule the railway traffic in case of unexpected events, thus avoiding dramatic drops in the system performance. In the literature, the majority of contributions aims at automatically minimizing the train delays or optimizing the railway system performance (e.g., energy consumption). However, such strategies are not always able to ensure satisfaction of passengers that in many cases experience the side-effects of the rescheduling actions (e.g., cancellation of train runs, cancellation of coincidences, rerouting of trains, etc.). In this paper, we propose a demand-oriented train rescheduling automatic technique that minimizes simultaneously the train delays and the discomfort perceived by passengers. When an unexpected event occurs, the rescheduling problem is set, based on the current state and nominal timetable of the system and its passengers flows. Hence, the problem is solved providing the control actions necessary to minimize both the delays and number of passengers subject to severe side-effects. the rescheduling is here formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem, where the operating rules of the railway network are represented by linear equality and inequality constraints, while the objective is a linear function to be minimized. the possible control actions consist in re-timing the rail traffic and modifying the connections among lines. the proposed technique is preliminarily evaluated on a test case and a discussion is provided on the outcomes.

the major concern in the field of power system is the voltage stability and transmission efficiency. Many studies have been going on in this topic and the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem is one of those problems which help us to peruse in the direction towards obtaining a more economic and stable system. Here, the ORPD problem is solved to reduce the real power losses and total voltage deviation (TVD) of few particular standard IEEE bus system. the two objectives are solved individually considering it as a single objective function. In this paper, the ORPD problem is integrated with a photovoltaic (PV) system where the power from the solar energy is added with the power from the existing conventional sources of energy, thus reducing the dependency on fossil fuels to some extent. this study has been done interpret the study of the PV integrated ORPD problem in solving the objective functions. this is mainly intended towards improving the efficiency and enhancing the security of the system. the problem is solved using different algorithms that are developed in the recent past, along with the JAYA algorithm and are tested on IEEE 30 and 57 bus systems to minimize the above mentioned objective functions. the results obtained from the optimization techniques have been compared along with many other techniques reported in the literature to observe the superiority among them.

the transmission characteristics of electromagnetic wave signals in farmland soil had been found to be quite complex, making it difficult to identify suitable soil environments where wireless underground sensor network nodes could achieve strong signal reception. To scientifically and accurately optimize signal reception strength for underground-to-aboveground and underground-to-underground communication modes, main soil conditions had been selected as relevant factors. Experimental data on signal reception strength under different soil conditions had been collected, and a regression equation had been established. A multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm was improved using chaotic initialization, linearly decreasing inertia weight, and asymmetric learning factors. It had been demonstrated by experimental results that the improved algorithm could effectively enhance convergence speed, avoid falling into local optima, and better handle multi-objective problems. Compared to traditional algorithms, signal reception strength had been improved by 147.28% and 9.16%, respectively, effectively determining soil environments suitable for both communication modes. this had provided technical support for the deployment and establishment of wireless underground sensor networks.

this paper describes an application of NSGA-II as one of Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) to a Many-Objective Nurse Scheduling in an actual hospitals in Japan and its effectiveness. Although many techniques for the actual nurse scheduling have been poposed, they are based on the culture of work styles in Europe or in the US, and then they are not fitted for creating a nurse work schedule in Japan. the nurse scheduling problem has many objectives, twelve objectives specially in the problem shown in this paper. Such an optimization problem having many objectives is generally called a Many-Objective Optimization Problem (MaOP), and it is considered that MOEAs such as NSGA-II are not effective. Although MOEA/D and NSGA-III, which are one of MaOEA, are known as effective algorithms for MaOPs, these algorithms, for example, require an so many number of scalarization vectors or appropriate reference set, they are not always easy to apply to real world problems. the MaOEAs are also very sensitive techniques to the vectors or reference set. On the other hand, although it has been pointed out that MOEAs are not suitable for MaOP in verification reports with several benchmarks, there is no fact that MOEAs have been applied to real-world MaOPs and their effectiveness has been denied. therefore, this paper tries to apply NSGA-II, one of MOEAs, to the practical nurse scheduling problem without omitting or reducing all the objectives, and verify its effectiveness.

this article presents the optimization of power dispatch in an island microgrid by linearizing the cost function of power generation under the uncertain conditions of renewable energy sources. Linearizing the cost function becomes crucial when considering the uncertainty of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy, in electricity generation. this uncertainty turns the power balance constraint conditions into variable functions within the forecasted range of renewable energy power. Linearization using the Least-squares method allows for the flexible computation of optimal coefficients, unconstrained by fixed structures. this flexibility enables the model to accurately describe complex variations in the data. Linearization using the slope coefficient method with boundary limits of segments used for curve linearization is straightforward and easy to determine. Penalty functions for load shedding are also considered in the general objective function of power dispatch optimization in the system. A microgrid system with 16 buses is utilized for computation and simulation to assess the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Multicast service is an important part of any modern routing architecture. Motivations for many-to-many multicast include general unpredictability of membership in many real applications; simplicity of the rendezvous for the application programmer; and low cost to end systems and switches in terms of state to maintain for the delivery tree. Shared trees have an even greater advantage over source based trees in the latter respect. Shared trees (as in the CBT model for Internet) are supported in the form of a single logical VC per multicast group (i.e., multipoint-to-multipoint VC or mp-mp VC) in the ATM networks. CRAM, SEAM and SPAM have been previously proposed for supporting mp-mp VC. the work in this paper does a performance comparison of these three schemes, with respect to buffer requirements, end-to-end delay, packet jitter and traffic overhead. Our evaluation is carried out through extensive simulations with different topologies and sender traffic types.
