Emerging distributed applications, such as big data analytics, generate a large number of flows t hat concurrently transport data across data center networks. To improve their performance, it is required to account for the behavior of such a collection of flows, i.e., c oflows, ra ther th an in dividual ones. State-of-the-art solutions achieve near-optimal completion time by continuously reordering unfinished c oflows at th e end-host and using network priorities. this paper shows that dynamically changing flow priorities at the end-host, without considering in-flight p ackets, c an cause high degrees of packet reordering, thus imposing pressure on the congestion control and potentially harming network performance in the presence of switches with shallow buffers. We present pCoflow, a n ew s olution t hat i ntegrates e nd-host b ased coflow ordering with in-network scheduling based on packet history. Our evaluation shows that pCoflow improves in coflow completion time upon state-of-the-art solutions by up to 34% for varying loads.

the steel industry has witnessed a progressive increase in the electrification degree of its production process due to advancements in decarburization technology. Consequently, there will be a substantial rise in electricity usage within the steel sector. the transition in energy consumption patterns is a significant obstacle to the functioning of the power system. One of the potential methods for achieving zero-carbon steel manufacturing is through the utilization of the direct reduction iron (DRI) - electric arc furnace (EAF) production route. this particular route is characterized by its high energy consumption and intricate production load characteristics. this paper attempts to examine the demand response capabilities of power loads throughout the DRI-EAF production process. A nonlinear programming model, encompassing the DRI-EAF steel plant, is constructed in light of the dependency of each link in the DRI-EAF production process. this study aimed to examine the impact of various production plans on the possible demand response of hydrogen-based steel plants, with a focus on minimizing the operating costs of these mills. the findings indicate that the scheduling model proposed in this study effectively utilizes the scheduling benefits offered by adjustable resources in the iron and steel production process, hence facilitating the economic scheduling of iron and steel plants.

Internet of things (IoT) apps will provide fast and effortless management of smart cities. this networked service management is dependent on the Internet Service Provider (ISP). this framework reduces physical human interaction in banking, railway counters, water and power counters, and so on. the IoT based applications makes the smart cities more sustainable. Recently, the Indian government is more focused and supportive towards building a reliable IoT based framework for developing innovative products, and businesses that rely mostly on cyberspace. this study discusses about the advantages, disadvantages and future possibilities of smart cities. the importance of the Internet of things (IoT) in the development of India's smart cities, as well as how widespread adoption may swiftly disrupt people's everyday routines are also discussed.

this paper explores methods for building rapport between Culture orientation and TEFL against the background of Chinese culture. Roadside traffic monitoring is increasingly performed by deploying roadside high-resolution video cameras and then running Computer Vision (CV) models on the video data. Since computer vision models are compute-intensive as they utilize Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), the data is usually sent to one or more edge servers located adjacent to mobile base stations. Recent techniques propose running CV models on tiles of videos separately to detect and track small objects. Several CV models exist, each with different requirements of compute and memory. Since more compute and memory-intensive CV models provide higher accuracy, a key challenge of such techniques is to determine which vision model should be used on which tile. this becomes even more challenging if multiple videos are processed by the same edge server. In this paper, we first formulate this problem of model selection on edge devices as an Integer Linear programming (ILP) problem, and then propose a heuristic to solve it. Our experiments show that it is quite effective in practice.

Coffee consumption in the Philippines has been continuously growing but the production of green coffee beans has been decreasing since 2015, resulting in demand and supply imbalances. Two of the identified root causes are low yield and poor quality of coffee beans. thus, this study aims to leverage image processing and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to develop a deep learning model that can detect common defects (i.e., black, sour, broken, quaker, and foreign material) of Robusta coffee beans and classify them. With automated defect classification, farmers can use this data and look for trends to identify potential problems during production as coffee bean defects can be attributed to issues during planting and/or cultivation. With such data, farmers will be able to implement preventive measures early on which can eventually lead to higher overall yield and improved quality of coffee beans. Using Python, all programming, model training, and evaluation were developed through Jupyter Notebook. A modified AlexNet CNN architecture was used, and it was optimized through a series of hyperparameter tuning. Based on the results of a five-fold crossvalidation, the optimized AlexNet CNN model has an average classification accuracy of $\mathbf{92.67} \%$, F1-score of $\mathbf{92.68} \%$, and Cohen’s Kappa of $91.20 \%$.

Active intelligent reflecting surfaces (AIRS) effectively overcome the multiplicative path loss effects encountered by passive intelligent reflecting surfaces (PIRS). To unleash the full potential of MEC systems, this paper investigates AIRS-assisted MEC systems in a multi-user scenario. Enhancing energy efficiency has emerged as a primary goal of 6G networks. Although AIRS has been shown to greatly improve the computational rate of MEC systems, its impact on computational energy efficiency (CEE) has not been fully studied. therefore, this study aims to maximize CEE as the optimization objective, posing a challenging non-convex fractional programming (FP) problem. To address this issue, we propose an iterative algorithm based on the Dinkel-bach method. We first transform the initial problem into a convex optimization problem using the FP method. We then employ the block coordinate descent (BCD) method to decouple the reformulated problem and derive closed-form optimal solutions for each subproblem through Lagrangian dual transformation and KKT conditions. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and elucidate the preferable operating points for choosing between AIRS and PIRS in terms of CEE.

Smart environments enabled by the Internet of things aim at improving our daily lives by automatically tuning ambient parameters and by achieving energy savings through self-managing cyber-physical systems. Commercial solutions, however, only permit setting simple target goals on those parameters and do not mediate between conflicting goals among different users and/or system administrators, nor across different IoT verticals. In this article, we propose a declarative approach (and its open-source Prolog prototype) to represent smart environments, user-set goals and customisable mediation policies to reconcile contrasting goals across multiple IoT systems.

Linear power flow is widely applied in various areas of power systems. the DC power flow model is a classical linear power flow model, but its main limitation is the inability to account for voltage magnitude. Other classical models that consider voltage magnitude are typically linearized in the original voltage magnitude space, leading to a computational accuracy bottleneck. To address this issue, this study first proposes an improved linear power flow model. the model remaps the voltage magnitude from logarithmic space to square space, preserving the nonlinear characteristics of the original current equation and compensating for the voltage phase angle. this approach overcomes the accuracy bottleneck of classical models. then, through matrix partitioning and transformation, the model achieves complete decoupling of the voltage magnitude and phase angle, avoiding nonconvex quadratic programming problems in optimization and enhancing computational efficiency. Finally, the accuracy and speed of the proposed model are validated through simulations across multiple test systems.
