there has been a large increase in Internet of things (IoT) devices used in many parts of life. these devices, also called edge devices, have been known to be vulnerable to attackers and to be used as a medium for network attacks. A simple loT device uses one or more sensors to read data from the real world and performs a simple action based on the sensor readings, such as a motion sensor in a home turning on the lights when motion is detected. Building a dataset to model real-world network traffic, along with pseudo-realistic uses of network attacks is essential for creating an intrusion detection system (IDS). In this paper, we develop an loT network anomaly dataset using synthetic and real-world network attacks. Virtual machines with Ubuntu 22.04 were used to contain the network data in a sandboxed environment. For our edge devices, we use Le Potato by Libre Computers as an alternative to Raspberry Pi 3, which is a popular single board computer used for home automation and hobbyist projects where the Raspberry Pi acts as the computer for the smart device. Each device has Waveshare Weather Sensor attached to it, which reads climate data such as temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. the edge devices are located within the Cyber Defense and AI lab at North Carolina Agriculture and Technology State University. real network attack tools were used to generate traffic to label the current data as attack data, along with the attack type. In the absence of the attack tools in use, the network traffic is labeled normal, or benign. the dataset is comprised of homogeneous data using environmental sensors that measure local climate data. In this study, we use XGBoost, LSTM+CNN, and Multilayer Perceptron along with various resampling methods to evaluate our synthetic dataset. In our results, we find that XGBoost produces the best performance at classifying attacks when using RandomUndersampler.

this research introduces the Photonics-Enhanced Embedded Robotic Intelligence Model (PEERIM), an innovative approach that integrates fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors with photonics and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for advanced robotics applications. Addressing the limitations of current AI models in dynamic and complex environments, PEERIM leverages the rapid data transmission capabilities of photonics to process high-frequency sensor data, enabling real-time decision-making and enhanced automation. the methodology encompasses the development and integration of a variant of the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm, tailored to manage the continuous data stream and execute precise, adaptive control. the proposed model has been empirically evaluated, demonstrating a significant improvement in handling real-time sensor data with an average reward of 99.02 and a low average loss of 0.099, indicating robust performance and learning stability. these findings suggest that PEERIM provides a substantial advantage over existing AI-driven robotic systems, offering a scalable solution for a variety of challenging applications. the study's contributions lay the groundwork for future advancements in autonomous systems, promising a new era of precision and reliability in robotics. © 2024 Bharati Vidyapeeth, New Delhi.

the Edge computing paradigm has emerged as the new industrial norm for creating distributed applications. these distributed applications need to target high reliability and scalability to meet the goals and requirements of the users. Achieving this definitely requires a real time observability stack to closely observe, track, debug and improve the application. In this paper we introduce the Non-Intrusive Edge Observability Stack(NEOS) that simplifies the process of collecting, analyzing, and visualizing telemetry data. It reduces the amount of code instrumentation needed to collect telemetry data up to 80% and offers extensive configuration capabilities within the subcomponents of the process. It offers a set of user-friendly abstractions and easy-to-use APIs, which minimizes the effort needed for manual instrumentation of application code. NEOS leverages popular open-source tools such as OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Prometheus, Jaeger, and Loki, for the collecting and visualizing of telemetry data. Furthermore, NEOS implements security based on the zero-trust model, which means that we assume that no user or system can be trusted by default. the security of every connection establised in NEOS employs mutual Transport Layer Security (mTLS) to prevent unauthorized access and safeguard sensitive data. Experiments were conducted to assess the efficiency of the stack by comparing the time and effort needed to instrument code with and without the stack. the outcomes showed a considerable reduction in instrumentation code. NEOS can be used by product managers, engineering and operation team for system and application health monitoring, real-time business insights, and debugging system.

the 6 degrees-of-freedom movement of micro-aerial vehicles (MAVs) combined with their lightweight, low-power computing makes accurate, real-time (RT) visual simultaneous localization and mapping (vSLAM) for MAVs considerably challenging. Existing classical and learning-based SLAM approaches require high computing capabilities to achieve RT performance, which prevents long-range deployment on lightweight, low-powered, and low-resource devices. We present MoV-SLAM, an approach that obtains long-range robust correspondence tracks for vSLAM using motion vectors that link macroblocks decoded from H.264 video coders. We contribute efficient algorithms to detect and match distinctive blocks for fast, accurate, and reliable vSLAM on low-resource, single-processor systems in MAVs. Our approach outperforms the existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) for single-processor vSLAM reconstruction when evaluated on multiple off-the-shelf datasets. One of the leading frontiers of the Internet of things (IoT) era, smart building systems have made modern homes more innovative, interconnected, and autonomous. the goal of a smart home system is to enhance users' comfort, safety, and efficiency. In this paper, a smart building testbed is designed and constructed as a cyber-physical system that allows testing and validating building control algorithms, communication networks, and user interfaces. the building control unit is responsible for optimizing the performance of testbed actuators (thermal, lighting, and access systems), whereby building parameters are aggregated via a set of distributed sensors and communicated to a management system. this data is observed and analyzed by the control system to produce optimal control commands. the building communication network is developed based on the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol, in which subscribers receive the measurement data, format it, and send it to the user-interface unit. the user interface is implemented in a Node-RED platform, where the data is visualized in real-time, and users are capable of interacting with the automation system. Experimental results demonstrate the usefulness of such a prototype for smart building monitoring and control research. © 2021 IEEE.

this paper introduces a cutting-edge method for urban traffic management that harnesses the power of the RAO (named after Professor Ravipudi Venkata Rao) optimization algorithm, enhanced by the integration of the Internet of things (IoT) and fog computing technologies. By collecting real-time traffic data from IoT devices, such as smart cameras and sensors, our approach provides a detailed and up-to-the-minute view of urban traffic conditions. this data is efficiently processed through fog computing infrastructure, which ensures minimal latency and supports immediate responses to fluctuating traffic patterns. the deployment of the RAO algorithm on this rich dataset stands out as a novel contribution, dynamically optimizing traffic flows and routes based on current conditions without the need for specific map data sources. Our research extends beyond traditional traffic management applications, offering significant benefits in emergencies by facilitating quicker medical and security responses and enhancing the management of military operations with the need for rapid and secure route planning. through experimental simulations conducted in urban environments, our findings demonstrate substantial improvements in traffic management and congestion alleviation. the results indicate that our integrated strategy offers a viable and adaptable solution for both everyday traffic oversight and exceptional scenario planning. this study lays the groundwork for future advancements in smart city technologies, underscoring the role of sophisticated technological integration in fostering more sustainable, efficient, and secure urban landscapes.

Adopting Digital Twin (DT) technology in vehicular edge computing (VEC) enables efficient capture of real-time state information of applications, thereby addressing complex task scheduling problems. Existing literature studies considered only minimizing service latency for task offloading;however, there is room for exploring strategies to enhance user Quality of Experience (QoE) in timeliness and reliability domains. In this paper, we have developed an optimization framework using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP), namely QuETOD, which minimizes service latency by allocating task execution responsibility to highly reliable and reputed vehicles in a DT-enabled VEC environment. the developed QuETOD framework clusters the vehicles based on the demand-supply theory of economics by considering computing resources and utilizing the multi-weighted subjective logic for getting the proper reputation update of the vehicles. the experimental results of the developed QuETOD system depict significant performance improvement in terms of QoE and reliability compared to the state-of-the-art works as high as 15% and 25%, respectively.

In the dynamic landscape of technology, the intersection of edge computing with health care holds immense promise, especially in addressing the needs of vulnerable populations such as the elderly. this research focuses on developing a motion detection system using advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and edge computing to integrate with real-time database systems. this system is developed not only to monitor activities but also to analyze activity patterns in the elderly. these patterns have the potential to identify diseases early, preventing unforeseen consequences. Our evaluation analyzes the accuracy of detecting standing and sleeping positions. It demonstrates high precision in identifying standing postures but reveals challenges in recognizing sleeping postures, mainly due to tracking and detection issues in the YOLOv8 model. © 2024 IEEE.

this research study investigates the use of homomorphic encryption to bolster data security in multi-cloud environments. As cloud computing gains popularity, safeguarding data confidentiality, integrity, and privacy becomes paramount. Homomorphic encryption presents a solution by permitting calculations on encrypted data without decryption, thereby preserving data confidentiality and privacy. this paper delves into Partially Homomorphic Encryption (PHE) and fully homomorphic encryption (FHE), highlighting their capabilities and applications. the paper explores the difficulties of employing homomorphic encryption in systems that utilize multiple clouds. these difficulties include high computational costs, complex key management, issues with interoperability, and trouble identifying suitable applications. the paper emphasizes the need for continuing research and cooperation among academic institutions, businesses, and governmental organizations to address these difficulties and maximize the potential of homomorphic encryption in environments with multiple clouds. © 2024 IEEE.
