this article describes and discusses the conditions under which starting from the Italian school system it would be possible to develop smart learning ecosystems. In particular, we focus on the so-called community pact—an opportunity recently introduced and promoted by the Ministry of Education—and on how dedicated technologies may support it. Starting from the description of the regulatory context and the consultation of teachers/students/territorial stakeholders, we illustrate the needs and motivations that led to the design and development of a web portal, we4SLE, which aims at fostering and facilitating: (a) the development of the identity and the increase of the internal cohesion of the community of reference;(b) the cultural growth of the students, also as future active citizens. Among the objectives of the web portal: provide an overview of the available resources, as well as methods for finding those necessary to implement the various initiatives;highlight the contribution made by the members of the community and give adequate visibility to the path of growth of each individual;support the strengthening of existing relationships in the community and encouraging the establishment of new ones;foster awareness about the community’s state of development through a participatory approach to its evaluation. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Gaining a better understanding of how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected students’ attitudes towards online education is important in order to pave the way from education disruption to education recovery. the current study aims to investigate how Covid-19 pandemic has changed University students’ perceptions about online education. the study used a localised version of a questionnaire developed by the Association for smart learning Ecosystem and regional development on different aspects of distance education. Participants were 90 University students. the results emerging from the investigation demonstrate a positive overall attitude of University students about online distance education, with relatively high levels of perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, perceived interest and digital competences increase and a preference towards blended modes of delivery. the findings can help education professionals to better plan and design future online courses in the post-Covid-19 landscape. © 2022, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Parents are critical to student attainment and learning. It is therefore key to foster their active participation in their children's education and provide them with tools to be effective. this paper describes the implementation of a territorial learning ecosystem that provides K12 parents with the facilities to support their children's learning at home, track progress against the national curriculum, and network and share their experience with other parents. the territorial learning ecosystem includes an interactive map of the country. this map displays indicators of the level of overall activity in the subject, as well as in each of the specific learning objectives defined by the national curriculum. the ecosystem provides indicators at four different levels: region, district, school, and classroom. During the second semester of 2019, a total of 1235 first grade classes voluntarily adopted the system. In mid-October, educational videos made by parents were uploaded to the system, in which they shared examples of homemade activities and teaching strategies. 98 schools from the most populated region submitted 98 parent-made videos to be shared during a public event. 82% of the videos showed a mother with her child learning to read or write, 49% showed word segmentation activities, 48% showed homemade educational games, and 26% showed activities using glove puppets. Experts rated the communication and educational quality of the videos. We found that a much higher proportion of videos involving glove puppets were rated as "very good" when compared to the other types.

Two years after the shock undergone by the Italian school ecosystem—due to the lock-down imposed by the COVID-19 at beginning of March 2020—the effects generated by the resulting fully digital immersion have been investigated by a survey administered to a representative sample of school teachers and principals. the analysis of the outcomes, together with their comparison with similar investigations performed in May 2020 and March 2021, shows that the activities carried out in the last two years—from emergency teaching to integrated teaching and, finally, to teaching in a "new normal" condition—have triggered an apparently fast innovation process with beneficial effects on the e-maturity of the system, on the educational processes and on the state of the individual well-being. Although some symptoms of normalization start to be glimpsed, and despite the workload increase induced by the adoption of technologies, the system seems ready to carry out an optimization of the educational processes to include a stable use of didactic activities augmented by technologies and, more in general, of forms of integrated on-line learning. As a corollary, emerges the relevance attributed, in a plebiscite manner, to continuous training (LLL) on learning technologies and digital pedagogy, as well as the need to implement permanent forms of smart working to thin the organizational processes. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Literature is an essential part of a nation's cultural identity, and each member of the community should be acquainted with the names and significant works of its most representative writers. In schools, literature is taught in traditional teacher-centered methods, using written literary studies or essays that students often memorize and reproduce. With the development of online environments, there is a need to enhance the teaching process, to shift to e-learning environments by providing online materials, statistical studies, and methods for evaluating the acquired knowledge. For Romanian literature, the General Dictionary of the Romanian Literature (DGLR) is a comprehensive work which includes information on authors, publications, institutions, and literary movements. the work is available in 7 written volumes and through the INTELLIT Web platform will be available online, to the general public, as a learning ecosystem. Besides the original information from DGLR, the platform will include statistical information extracted from the DGLR corpus, such as writers' demographic information and places visited by important authors with modern visualizations. the purpose of this study is to provide the general audience visual overviews and snapshots of the Romanian literature as a whole.

this paper presents an exploratory study on the reaction of the Iraqi university ecosystem to the Covid-19 pandemic, a learning ecosystem with no consolidated tradition in distance learning operating in a country where connectivity is granted mainly by a mobile phone infrastructure. the study analyses data collected from questionnaires filled in by 572 teachers and 2746 students belonging to more than 35 different universities and colleges located all over Iraq. the ecosystem was able to switch to distance learning in two weeks and to generate a reasonable level of satisfaction in the teachers and, even more, in the students, despite the problems that have been encountered. the influence of contextual and individual factors on the opinions and future intentions of both teachers and students has been investigated together with the causal network that puts in relation to such factors. the distance learning experience conducted during the first five months of lockdown induced a relevant change in the opinion about the nature of an educational experience, as well a desire to continue to experience distance and blended learning processes, in slightly more than 50% of the respondents. the educational research landscape is still in a very early stage regarding the research in micro-credentials and how they are defined in scientific and policy documents. Whereas the micro-credentials trend is on rapid rise at the international and European level, coherent approaches to the concept, understanding and use of them are yet to be clarified. We addressed the issue through a literature review on the existing terminology and understandings related to micro-credentials in higher education in current scientific papers and policy documents, clustering them based on the granulation level from small units of learning to standalone certifications. Research shows that further research is needed to create a coherent approach for defining what micro-credentials are and how they can be integrated into educational processes, especially in higher education. Even though policy documents and scientific papers converge in numerous cases on creating a common definition for micro-credentials, differences are still present. the vision and practice do not always concur when describing the meaning and use of these innovative certification instruments. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

smartness has been advocated with a strong bias, almost exclusive, on technology’s characteristics and extension of implementation in diverse ecosystems. the research process reported in this paper takes place in the school ecosystem and considers all its stakeholders in a bottom-up approach to nurture the knowledge needed to understand the relation that is established between educational community and school. this approach does not exclude other top-down models and approaches to understand the school ecosystem, in fact, it supports the complementary need to have a correlation of both perspectives to develop on the community - school relation. the reported work contextualizes and explains the smart learning ecosystem strategy and describes the research method used to engage and inquire stakeholders concerning their wishes, interests and needs in the school ecosystem. the smart school questionnaires used to inquire the educational community’s stakeholders will be described considering structure and nature of closed and open-ended questions that are used. the research procedure, data processing and analysis will be shared in the context of the pilot study that took place last spring 2017 in the José Estêvão Aveiro school cluster, with 7-9th grade students, n = 81. the potential for co-design of technology-mediated solutions (APPs/services) will also be discussed in the context of the qualitative opinion of these particular stakeholders. © Springer international Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2019.
