Effective planning and control of district energy systems must account for numerous complexities and uncertainties, requiring advanced computational tools. this paper introduces the Ehub Modeling Tool, an open source software package for preliminary design optimization of district energy systems. Using automated code generation techniques that directly translate raw data descriptions of a given district into executable optimization code, the tool simplifies and accelerates the process of developing and executing district energy system optimizations, and visualizing/interpreting results. As an innovative design for high performance computing, Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor based on Intel Many Integrated Core (Intel MIC) architecture relies heavily on its SIMD (single instruction multiple data) unit. However, performance of non-contiguous memory access has become the memory wall towards efficient utilization of SIMD unit on Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors due to gather/scatter overhead. Existing vectorization techniques in the optimization of gather/scatter overhead have been focusing on extracting data parallelism from inter-loop and intra-loop in a decoupled means. In this paper, we propose a novel inter-intra-hybrid vectorization technique which further exploits SIMD efficiency. In this technique, we generate optimized SIMD code for loops requesting non-contiguous memory. Additional strategies are also presented to improve SIMD unit parallelism through data padding and redundant computation. To evaluate our technique, the two major functions from Sandia's miniMD benchmark, i.e., LJ force calculation and neighbor list build, are taken for experiments which show that our proposed method achieves a performance gain of 25%-40% compared with Intel compiler auto vectorized code and outperforms the existing methods. Our optimization method can be further applied to other highly parallel workloads with frequent non-contiguous memory access, which is very common in real-world scientific applications.

Clustered ILP processors are characterized by a large number of non-centralized on-chip resources grouped into clusters. Traditional code generation schemes for these processors consist of multiple phases for cluster assignment, register allocation and instruction scheduling. Most of these approaches need additional re-scheduling phases because they often do not impose finite resource constraints in all phases of code generation. these phase-ordered solutions have several drawbacks, resulting in the generation of poor performance code. Moreover, the iterative/back-tracking algorithms used in some of these schemes have large running times. In this paper we present CARS, a code generation framework for Clustered ILP processors, which combines the cluster assignment, register allocation, and instruction scheduling phases into a single code generation phase, thereby eliminating the problems associated with phase-ordered solutions. the CARS algorithm explicitly takes into account all the resource constraints at each cluster scheduling step to reduce spilling and to avoid iterative re-scheduling steps. We also present a new on-the-fly register allocation scheme developed for CARS. We describe an implementation of the proposed code generation framework and the results of a performance evaluation study using the SPEC95/2000 and MediaBench benchmarks.

Provably correct compilation is an important aspect in development of high assurance software systems. In this paper we explore approaches to provably correct code generation based on programming language semantics, particularly Horn logical semantics, and partial evaluation. We show that the definite clause grammar (DCG) notation can be used for specifying both the syntax and semantics of imperative languages. We next show that continuation semantics can also be expressed in the Horn logical framework.

Fusion power plant performance analysis using the HERCULES code

the HERCULES code was developed to assist in the safety and environmental analysis tasks of the European Power Plant Conceptual Study (PPCS). Its capabilities, however, extend beyond this kind of assessments. Coupling of the different computational tools and nuclear databases to the same geometry and material compositions, automation of input file generation and post-processing subroutines enable self-consistent calculations and radial-poloidal analyses of several parameters of interest in fusion technology design, optimising time and computer resources. Results include 2D variations of the neutron flux distribution and energy spectra, material activation and related quantities, wall loading, nuclear primary heating, tritium and helium production and radiation damage rates to materials. the capabilities of the neutron transport module of HERCULES are presented here and benchmarked on the PPCS models. Results are consistent with values assumed in the design process or obtained through the more specific PPCS analyses: tritium generation ratios are in the range between 1.12 and 1.36, energy multiplication between 1.16 and 1.39, and average wall loads between 1.90 and 2.54 MWm(-2). In this paper, the internal flows inside two prototype ceiling diffusers are modelled by using standard CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software. Based on the modelled velocity and density fields, the function generator of the CFD code is used to compute the source fields of the Lighthill's wave equation, telling the yield of flow noise at each point. Even though the two diffuser geometries closely resemble each other, the difference in their noise generation is very distinct. It is demonstrated that LES (Large Eddy Simulation) with very short time steps gives the source field accurately enough to resolve the small flow details responsible for the noise generation, and can reproduce the difference between the two designs. this implies that very short time step LES is a useful tool in locating the noise sources and comparing the noise productions of alternative geometries of flow handling components. A more advanced way to exploit a simulated velocity field would be to enter it into a separate acoustic software, calculating the source field in the Fourier domain and solving the exact acoustic field in the far field. Whichever approach is selected, the results suggest that prototype testing in HVAC industry could be cut down by applying computer simulation in flow noise analysis.

We describe and evaluate HELIX, a new technique for automatic loop parallelization that assigns successive iterations of a loop to separate threads. We show that the inter-thread communication costs forced by loop-carried data dependences can be mitigated by code optimization, by using an effective heuristic for selecting loops to parallelize, and by using helper threads to prefetch synchronization signals. We have implemented HELIX as part of an optimizing compiler framework that automatically selects and parallelizes loops from general sequential programs. the framework uses an analytical model of loop speedups, combined with profile data, to choose loops to parallelize. On a six-core Intel® Core™ i7-980X, HELIX achieves speedups averaging 2.25×, with a maximum of 4.12× , for thirteen C benchmarks from SPEC CPU2000. Copyright © 2012 ACM.

Quantum and Classical computers continue to work together in tight cooperation to solve difficult problems. the combination is thus suggested in recent times for decoding the Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, for the next generation Wireless Communication systems. In this paper we have worked out the Quadratic Unconstrained Binary optimization (QUBO) formulation for Rayleigh Fading channels for two different scenarios- channel state fully known and not known. the resultant QUBO are solved using D-Wave 2000Q Quantum Annealer and the outputs from the Annealer are classically postprocessed, invoking the notion of diversity. Simple minimum distance decoding of the available copies of the outputs led to improved performance, compared to picking the minimumenergy solution in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER). Apart from providing these results and the comparisons to fully classical Simulated Annealing (SA) and the traditional Belief Propagation (BP) based strategies, some remarks about diversity due to quantum processing are also spelt out.

To optimize various high performance computing (HPC) programs on complex supercomputer architectures source-to-source optimization tools are becoming important to support network-architecture-specific and application-specific performance optimization in addition to compiler optimizations. Because of try-and-error nature of performance optimization work and complex relationships among optimizations, programmers often need to evaluate effectiveness of many combinations of their optimizations on the target architecture. When programmers optimize their program by both source-to-source optimization tool and manual editing, an issue, called, "reapplication conflicts," can occur. To optimize HPC programs, a programmer modifies some code to apply optimizations by manual editing and automatic conversion by source-to-source tool and, compiles it, and executes it to confirm the effects of the optimizations. If it is found that an earlier optimization is ineffective, the code should return to the point before the ineffective optimization, the optimization should be removed or replaced, and any succeeding operations that were confirmed to be effective should be reapplied. this can cause the "reapplication conflicts," because the succeeding operations were performed on different source code. Current version management systems support this conflict only for manual code optimizations, but do not support it for automatic conversions by source-to-source optimization tools. We propose an algorithm to resolve reapplication conflicts, and a new user interface to show the status and necessity of the reapplications. A user can select and modify any earlier operation, and the succeeding operations are automatically reapplied as needed to produce a new version without using explicit branch and merge operations by using the proposed algorithm.
