Effective static analyses have been proposed which infer bounds on the number of resolutions. these have the advantage of being independent from the platform on which the programs are executed and have been shown to be useful in a number of applications, such as granularity control in parallel execution. On the other hand, in distributed computation scenarios where platforms with different capabilities come into play, it is necessary to express costs in metrics that include the characteristics of the platform. In particular, it is specially interesting to be able to infer upper and lower bounds on actual execution times. With this objective in mind, we propose an approach which combines compile-time analysis for cost bounds with a one-time profiling of a given platform in order to determine the values of certain parameters for that platform. these parameters calibrate a cost model which, from then on, is able to compute statically time bound functions for procedures and to predict with a significant degree of accuracy the execution times of such procedures in that concrete platform. the approach has been implemented and integrated in the CiaoPP system.

Interconnection networks play a crucial role in the performance of massively parallel computers. Hierarchical interconnection networks provide high performance at low cost by exploring the locality that exists in the communication patterns of massively parallel computers. A hierarchical torus network (HTN) is a 2D-torus network of multiple basic modules, in which the basic modules are 3D-torus networks that are hierarchically interconnected for higher level networks. the static network performance of the HTN has already been studied and has been shown to be good. Dynamic communication performance has been evaluated under uniform traffic patterns but not under a nonuniform traffic, such as matrix transpose traffic patterns. In this paper, we present a deadlock-free routing algorithm for the HTN using 3 virtual channels and evaluate the network's dynamic communication performance under matrix transpose traffic, using the proposed routing algorithm. We evaluate the dynamic communication performance of HTN, H3D-mesh, TESH, and mesh networks by computer simulation. We find that the dynamic communication performance of HTN is better than that of the H3D-mesh, TESH, and mesh networks.

Novel opportunities and challenges are emerging in the near future, such as Electronic commerce (e-commerce), due to the convergence of computers and telecommunication. Successful e-commerce requires rapid adaptation and excellent timing for service providers and users with guaranteed quality of service. Agent based technologies represent one of the most promising technological paradigm for distributed service system to meet these requirements. the aim of the current paper is to briefly review the agent systems basic architecture, with emphasize on agent communication languages. Two most popular agent communication languages, namely FIPA ACL and KQML have been briefly reviewed. the paper summarizes standardization activity of the agent system from the perspective of FIPA and OMG reference models. the relationship between FIPA and OMG has been given with a short discussion.

Using distributed and parallel computing systems have become a de facto for implementing scientific and industrial applications, which require tremendous amount of computing resources. As a widely used approach, general purpose distributed frameworks, like Hadoop, have provided us with many facilities to develop a distributed computing system for our applications. these General-purpose frameworks are flexible but their flexibility can only take us so far. there are many applications, which not all of their requirements can be met by these frameworks. Image matching using SIFT algorithm can be a good example of these applications. SIFT is a highly complex algorithm for extracting robust features from pictures. this paper outlines most important motivations and challenges for implementing specialized distributed systems. We present siftD, an application for distributing and parallelizing SIFT algorithm. It uses networked computers to distribute the algorithm. Inside each system, multi-core processors and Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) are used to parallelize execution. SiftD's performance and capability for utilizing different computing resources has been evaluated. Results show its performance is generally higher than 93%, which is a fairly appropriate performance. Furthermore, it can utilize broad range of hardware platforms.

Tracking, partitioning and tracing in modern dynamic high performance computing systems are three of the most innovative and important development aspects for performance optimization purposes and state-of-the-art advanced quality. this paper discusses these three aspects with respect to distributed systems and proposes new mechanisms for an advanced utilization of software in this domain. We present a specific tracking mechanism via vector clocks for model and code partitioning purposes and the determination of causality relations. Further, a tracing approach for an effective analysis and thereby utilization of code and the corresponding architecture is introduced. the combination of both approaches leads to a high degree of parallelism and a fine-grained structure of execution units, that further traced, supports a precise analysis of synchronous and asynchronous system's behavior as well as an optimal load balancing. the mechanisms are introduced with respect to a model based control engineering tool and event diagrams.

Macro-scale simulation has been advanced as one tool for application -- architecture co-design to express operation of exascale systems. these simulations approximate the behavior of system components, trading off accuracy for increased evaluation speed. Application skeletons serve as the vehicle for these simulations, but they require accurately capturing the execution behavior of computation. the complexity of application codes, the heterogeneity of the platforms, and the increasing importance of simulating multiple performance metrics (e.g., execution time, energy) require new modeling techniques. We propose flexible statistical models to increase the fidelity of application simulation at scale. We present performance model validation for several exascale mini-applications that leverage a variety of parallel programming frameworks targeting heterogeneous architectures for both time and energy performance metrics. When paired with these statistical models, application skeletons were simulated on average 12.5 times faster than the original application incurring only 6.08% error, which is 12.5% faster and 33.7% more accurate than baseline models.

In a conventional mobile environment, mobile clients retrieve data items from database servers via mobile support stations, by downloading the items over scalable broadcast channels (push-based), requesting them over shared point-to-point channels (pull-based), or making use of both types of channels to retrieve them (hybrid). Caching is a key technique for improving data retrieval performance of mobile clients, regardless of the data delivery mechanism. the emergence of robust peer-to-peer technologies now brings to reality what we call "cooperative caching" in which mobile clients can access data items from the cache in their neighboring peers, thereby adding a new dimension for data caching. this paper studies the system performance of a cooperative caching scheme, called COCA, in a hybrid data delivery environment, and proposes a cooperative cache replacement scheme, called CORE, for mobile systems. the performance of COCA and CORE schemes is evaluated through a number of simulated experiments. the experiment results show that COCA effectively improves the system performance in push-based and hybrid-data delivery environments, especially in a heavily-loaded environment. the results also indicate that CORE can further improve on the access latency and reduce the number of expensive server requests, which consume scarce pull-based bandwidth.

Ideally, information systems security enables management to have confidence that their computational systems provide the information requested and expected, while denying accessibility to those who have no right to it. the analysis of incidents resulting in damage to information systems show that most losses were still due to errors or omissions by authorized users, actions of disgruntled employees, and an increase in external penetrations of systems by outsiders. Traditional controls are normally inadequate in these cases or are focused on the wrong threat, resulting in the exposure of vulnerability. Security is a critical parameter for the expansion and wide usage of agent technology. A threat model is constructed and subsequently the basic techniques to deal effectively with these threats are analyzed. this paper presents a dynamic, extensible, configurable and interoperable security architecture for mobile agent systems. It is explained how this architecture can be used to tackle a big part of security threats. All the components of the security architecture are analyzed while we also argue for the benefits they offer.

Hardware transactional memory implementations are becoming increasingly available. For instance, the Intel Core i7 4770 implements Restricted Transactional Memory (RTM) support for Intel Transactional Synchronization Extensions (TSX). In this paper, we present a detailed evaluation of RTM performance and energy expenditure. We compare RTM behavior to that of the TinySTM software transactional memory system, first by running micro benchmarks, and then by running the STAMP benchmark suite. We find that which system performs better depends heavily on the workload characteristics. We then conduct a case study of two STAMP applications to assess the impact of programming style on RTM performance and to investigate what kinds of software optimizations can help overcome RTM's hardware limitations.

Mobile servers are established to provide services for mobile nodes in an anticipated area. If the distribution of mobile nodes can be foreseen, the location of mobile servers becomes critical to the QoS of wireless systems. Under resource and topology constraints, it is very difficult to figure out a solution, or unable to cover all given mobile nodes within limited number of mobile servers. In this paper, we study the issue of the partial covering problem such that part of mobile nodes to be covered. Several approximation algorithms are proposed to cover the maximum number of elements. For real time systems, such as the battlefield communication system, the proposed algorithms with polynomial-time complexity can be efficiently applied. the algorithm complexity analysis illustrates the improvement made by our algorithms. the experimental results show that the performance of our algorithms is much better than other existing 3-approximation algorithm for the robust k-center problem.
