Self-organization is a key factor for the future evolution of mobile networks, especially for introduction of the new radio standard LTE. Reasons are the increasing complexity, heterogeneity and management effort. Based on an overview about the current state of the art, the self-organization potential for enabling real plug and play functionality, automatic network optimization, improved end-to-end QoS and new energy saving technologies is highlighted. this is especially true for the upcoming trend towards small cell deployments. Our vision is an essentially simplified network management architecture relying on a distributed self-organization functionality which enables large steps towards autonomous operation of network elements.

the Phylogenetic Likelihood Function (PLF) is an important statistical function for evaluating phylogenetic trees. To this end, the PLF is the computational kernel of all state-of-the-art likelihood-based phylogenetic inference programs. Typically, it accounts for more than 85% of total execution time in such programs. We present a substantially improved hardware architecture for computing the PLF based on previous experiences with implementing the PLF on reconfigurable logic. Our new design is optimized for computing the PLF on four-state (DNA) input data. It is also adapted to the computational requirements of real-world tree inference programs and completely independent of the specific tree search algorithm at hand. Furthermore, we describe how our architecture can be modified and adapted to handle general n-state data, such as protein (20 states) or RNA secondary structure data (6, 7, or 16 states, depending on the model). Finally, we designed an interface mechanism such that our PLF hardware architecture can interact with the widely-used phylogenetic inference tool RAxML. We deploy FPGA technology to verify the correctness of the architecture and to evaluate performance.

In the context of renewable energy sources integration, the use of microgrids (MGs) with multiple distributed generation (DG) based on voltage source inverters is the solution to significantly reduce the influence of the unpredictable nature of the renewable energy sources on the grid. this paper focuses on the problem of uncertainties and disturbances found in such applications with various LCL filter parameters, load conditions and network conditions, and the problem of voltage control of inverter-interfaced microgrids with radial structure. the main objectives of this paper are to (i) design a robust low-order voltage controller which ensures robustness as well as desired performance of the microgrid system in spite of uncertain parameters; (ii) validate the complete model of MG under different operating conditions using a digital real-time simulator. this simulator is a beneficial tool that allows the verification of several scenarios with different operating conditions. It accelerates the testing process as compared to offline simulations, where computation time is much larger.

Summary form only given. We propose a new distribution scheme for a parallel Strassen's matrix multiplication algorithm on heterogeneous clusters. In the heterogeneous clustering environment, appropriate data distribution is the most important factor for achieving maximum overall performance. However, Strassen's algorithm reduces the total operation count to about 7/8 times per one recursion and, hence, the recursion level has an effect on the total operation count. thus, we need to consider not only load balancing but also the recursion level in Strassen's algorithm. Our scheme achieves both load balancing and reduction of the total operation count. As a result, we achieve a speedup of nearly 21.7% compared to the conventional parallel Strassen's algorithm in a heterogeneous clustering environment.

A public-key encryption algorithm and a practical hybrid scheme are proposed in this paper. this algorithm uses the advanced transform techniques, i.e. the Number theoretic Transforms (NTTs) to diffuse data, and uses a non-linear technique based on the Elliptic Curve Discrete Logarithm Problem (ECDLP) to confuse data. the main advantage of the proposed algorithm is its high efficiency and capability. the plaintext can be encrypted in blocks in parallel, thus saves computational time. the proposed algorithm also can be easily applied in a hybrid scheme for practical applications.

Context-based communication allows for the dissemination of messages to mobile users with a specified context, i.e. at a location and with certain attribute values. this enables, e.g., a message to students on campus attending a certain class, with information about a study group for an upcoming exam. An overlay network of context-aware routers efficiently disseminate the messages to all matching receivers. Directed forwarding of such messages requires that the routers maintain knowledge about the contexts of connected users. Global knowledge, i.e., each router knowing about every user, scales poorly, though, because of the necessary updates.

the scheduling and mapping of the precedence-constrained task graphs of parallel programs to processors is considered one of the most crucial NP-complete problems in parallel and distributed computing systems. In this paper, a dynamic task scheduling model based on fuzzy logic is proposed. the main objective of this technique is to improve the fuzzy decision which is used in task scheduling on a network of processing elements by introducing new input parameters to an existing fuzzy model and, in the same time, improving the load balance on the network in a dynamic environment. the proposed Fuzzy Model is capable of processing inputs from on the fly data that arises from the current state of the processors. According to the proposed model, tasks are generated randomly and are served based on the First-Come-First-Serve rule. When the task is ready to be assigned, its information is passed to the processors for bidding. Each processor has a local scheduler for managing its own activities, which supplies information on its current state and follows whatever decision is given where the fuzzy logic mechanism is used in making decision on the task assignment. A comparative study between the existed fuzzy model and our modified fuzzy model has been done. the comparative results show that our modified fuzzy model outperforms the existed one.

the advent of service-oriented architectures has strongly facilitated the development and deployment of large-scale distributed applications. the middleware for orchestrating applications that consist of several distributed services has to be inherently distributed as well, in order to provide a high degree of scalability and to avoid any single point of failure. Self-healing execution of composite services requires replicated control metadata and instance data in a way that does not affect adaptivity and elasticity of the middleware. In this paper, we present OSIRIS-SR, a decentralized approach to self-healing composite service execution in a distributed environment. OSIRIS-SR exploits dedicated node monitors, organized in a self-organizing Safety Ring, for the replication of control data. Moreover, OSIRIS-SR leverages virtual stable storage for managing composite service instance data in a robust way. We present the architecture of OSIRIS-SR's Safety Ring and discuss how it provides self-healing composite service execution. the performance evaluation shows that the additional gain in robustness has only marginal effects on the scalability characteristics of the system.

Exascale computing is one of the major challenges of this decade, and several studies have shown that the communication is becoming one of the bottlenecks for scaling parallel applications. the characteristic analysis of communication is an important means to improve the performance of scientific applications. In this paper, we focus on the statistical regularity in time-dimension communication characteristics of representative scientific applications and find that the distribution of interval of communication events has a power-law decay, which is widely found in scientific interests and human activities. For a quantitative study on characteristics of power-law distribution, we count two groups of typical measures: bursty vs. memory and periodicity vs. dispersion. Our analysis shows that the communication events reflect a "strong-bursty and weak-memory" characteristic and we also capture the periodicity and dispersion in interval distribution. All of the quantitative results are verified with eight representative scientific applications on Tianhe-2 supercomputer with a fat-tree-like interconnection network. Finally, our study provides an insight on the relationship between communication optimization and time-dimension communication characteristics.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm has decoupled data and control planes on traditional networks. In this context, a logically-centralized controller, with full knowledge on network resources and traffic loads, executes routing algorithms to identify forwarding paths, while networking resources (switches and routers) just work on packet forwarding. this work contributes by executing and characterizing a well-know distributed application, NAS parallel benchmark, atop an SDN-based data center. A comparison with different flow routing algorithms is presented, highlighting that an application can reduce its runtime when applying a multi-path routing.
