In this paper, we describe an approach to distributed enforcement of sticky policies in heterogeneous hardware and software environments. these heterogeneous environments might have differing mechanisms for attesting to their security capabilities and data sources might specify different levels of trust for different data items. Such an environment requires highly flexible policy specification and enforcement mechanisms. We employ sticky policies that travel with data wherever it travels, and we separate them into two components, a hosting policy and a usage policy. Hosting policies are used to ensure that data are transferred only to entities that are provably capable of providing local enforcement and only further transferring data under the same policies. Usage policies confer access, viewing, and update capabilities on users based on their attributes. the approach is supported by attribute-based certificates and policies, which include what authorities are trusted to certify attributes. In addition to presenting a full description of the approach, we report on a prototype implementation that includes all of the aforementioned components and also makes use of a modified version of Excel we developed to track security labels as data move through spreadsheets that are being shared by multiple users across different systems.

the 7th Latin American Network Operations and Management symposium (LANOMS 2011) was held in Quito, Ecuador, on October 10 11, 2011. A panel on 'Trends in Managing Virtual Infrastructures: from Networks to Clouds', moderated by Prof. José Marcos Nogueira, from Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, generated lively discussions on the current state of the technology in cloud computing, what are the main challenges in this field, and what can be expected to be solvable in the near future. Dr. Vladimir Tosic's keynote started by highlighting that currently many organizations are attracted to cloud computing as an information and communications technology sourcing model that can improve flexibility and total cost of systems. Prof. Otto C.M.B. Duarte's keynote was 'On the Design of the Future Internet'. He started highlighting that the very growth of the Internet is due to the TCP/IP protocol stack and its model of a simple core and complexity on the border.

In this paper, uneven temperature distribution of a heated material is computed by the coupled method. the coupled method can calculate electromagnetics, and all of the heat transmission phenomena of heat conduction, heat transfer by air convection, and heat radiation. the calculated temperature distribution at the surface of the material is compared with the measured one. As a result, the tendency of the calculated and measured temperature distributions agrees well. the validity of the proposed method on this kind of problem is verified. the temperature of the surrounding air is also confirmed by the computation including the temperature in the phantom.

In the past years, most task scheduling algorithms consider either to minimize the application's completion time or to minimize the application's energy consumption subject to a deadline constraint. Few of them can achieve these two performance goals at the same time. In this paper, we propose an energyaware importance-ratio-based stochastic task scheduling (EISTS) algorithm, which makes a good balance between the makespan and energy consumption and achieves high system weighted improvement based on the importance-ratio of makespan toenergy consumption for heterogeneous parallel systems. Compared with other existing algorithms, our algorithm can achieve shorter application's completion time when the importance-ratio of makespan to energy consumption is high. On the contrary, our algorithm consumes less energy. To prove its validity, we compare our proposed algorithms with two existing scheduling algorithms(SHEFT and ECS) in terms of system weighted improvement, makespan, and energy consumption respectively. the results of simulations show that the system weighted improvement of our algorithm and those two compared algorithms are 37%, 17%, and 18% respectively, which clearly demonstrates that ourEISTS algorithm outperforms them significantly. In addition, our algorithm is also very competitive in terms of both makespan and energy consumption.

In computer networks data flows can often reach transfer rates of several Gigabits per second. On the other hand most embedded systems have additional criteria - power consumption, size, low cost, generated heat - which usually means that even a flow rate of several Megabits per second is difficult to reach. this paper reports on the development of an automated embedded system for data transfers of up to 47 Mib/s using two customized embedded 68 k/Coldfire RISC microprocessors.

Since large-scale and data-intensive applications have been widely deployed, there is a growing demand for high-performance storage systems to support data-intensive applications. Compared with traditional storage systems, next-generation systems will embrace dedicated processor to reduce computational load of host machines and will have hybrid combinations of different storage devices. the advent of flash-memory-based solid state disk has become a critical role in revolutionizing the storage world. However, instead of simply replacing the traditional magnetic hard disk with the solid state disk, it is believed that finding a complementary approach to corporate both of them is more challenging and attractive. this paper explores an idea of active storage, an emerging new storage configuration, in terms of the architecture and design, the parallel processing capability, the cooperation of other machines in cluster computing environment, and a disk configuration, the hybrid combination of different types of disk drives. Experimental results indicate that the proposed HcDD achieves better I/O performance and longer storage system lifespan.

this paper proposes an automatic clustering method using self-organizing feature maps (SOM). there are a lot of studies on the automatic clustering. Among them, SOM-based clustering methods are attracted in terms of visual understandabilities. In general SOM, each weight vector after learning covers a subspace in input space. In the SOM-based clustering, a histogram, i.e. a density distribution of data, is constructed from the frequency of data existing in each subspace. In most situations, the histogram obtained from the learnt SOM involves more excessive peaks and valleys than we envisioned by the true number of clusters. therefore, it is difficult to assign the data to clusters from the visual inspections of histogram. In this study, to eliminate the unnecessary extremums from histogram and make cluster analyses easier, a method to smooth the histogram is proposed. In the proposed method, the histogram is edited by considering learnt weight vectors and neighborhood characteristics. As a result, the edited histogram is enough smoothed to understand the relationships between the agglomeration of data and clusters. In addition, an automatic clustering scheme is proposed on the basis of the edited histogram. the effectiveness and the validity of the proposed method for the automatic clustering are examined for several artificially generated data.

the multi-objective integer programming problems in large scale are considered time consuming. In the past, mathematical structures were used that can get benefits of high processing powers and parallel processing. the Branch and Bound (B&B) algorithm is one of the most used methods to solve combinatorial optimization problems. A general approach to generate all non-dominated solutions of the multi-objective integer programming (MOIP) Problem is developed. In this paper, a supervisor-master-sub-master-worker algorithm to solve large scale integer multi-objective problems that can get the benefits of mathematical structures and high processing powers has been proposed. this approach addresses several issues related to the characteristics of the algorithm itself and the properties of parallel computing systems. From the solved benchmark example this algorithm proved to provide a considerable high performance. Results show that a consistently better efficiency can be achieved in solving integer equations, providing reduction of time.

Virtualized Cloud platforms have become increasingly common and the number of online services hosted on these platforms is also increasing rapidly. A key problem faced by providers in managing these services is detecting the performance anomalies and adjusting resources accordingly. As online services generate a very large amount of monitored data in the form of time series, it becomes very difficult to process this complex data by traditional approaches. In this work, we present a novel distributed parallel approach for performance anomaly detection. We build upon Holt-Winters forecasting for automatic aberrant behavior detection in time series. First, we extend the technique to work with MapReduce paradigm. Next, we correlate the anomalous metrics with the target Service Level Objective (SLO) in order to locate the suspicious metrics. We implemented and evaluated our approach on a production Cloud encompassing IaaS and PaaS service models. Experimental results confirm that our approach is efficient and effective in capturing the metrics causing performance anomalies in large time series datasets.

Future scalable, high throughput, and high performance applications are. likely to execute on platforms constructed by clustering multiple autonomous distributed servers, with resource access governed by agreements between the owners and users of these servers. Such systems raise several new resource management challenges, chief amongst which is the enforcement of agreements to ensure that, despite the distributed nature of both requests and resources, user requests only receive a predetermined share of the aggregate resource. Current solutions only enforce such agreements at a coarse granularity and in a centralized fashion, limiting their applicability. this paper presents an architecture for the distributed enforcement of resource sharing agreements. Our approach exploits a uniform application-independent representation of agreements, and combines it with efficient tune-window based coordinated queuing algorithms running on multiple nodes. We have successfully implemented this general strategy in two different network layers: a Layer-7 HTTP redirector and a Layer-4 IP packet redirector; which redirect connection requests from distributed clients to a cluster of distributed servers. Our measurements of both implementations verify that our approach is general and effective.
