Although there are several works on providing event-based services in pervasive environment or WSN, most of them have not considered composite event detection in an energy-efficient fashion. Composite events consist of multiple primitive events with temporal and spatial relations and are much more difficult to manage. Because of the resource constraints in WSN, existing event detection algorithms may not be suitable for WSN when energy efficiency is considered. In this paper, we propose TED (Type-based composite Event Detection), a distributed composite event detection algorithm. the essential idea of TED is type-based event fusion, where some sensor nodes are selected as fusion points. then lower-level events will be fused on these fusion points for detection of higher-level composite events. Each composite event type is assigned to certain fusion point for detection so that the composite events may be detected in-network instead of at the sink. Event fusion with minimum energy cost is an NP-complete problem. We propose a distributed randomized algorithm to solve the problem. We analyze the energy efficiency of TED to show both its effectiveness and efficiency. By carrying out both simulation and real world experiments on TED, we show that TED can reduce the energy cost by 10-20% in event-based WSN applications compared with naive event detection mechanism where the event relations are not considered.

Wireless sensor and actuator networks (WS&ANs) are a new technology based on networks of small radio-enabled embedded devices that are being deployed in areas such as environmental monitoring, vehicle tracking, building management, body monitoring and other applications. Power sources for network nodes are often limited, which imposes restrictions on hardware resources and their use by the underlying embedded software. We propose a new wireless sensor network architecture that is especially designed for the task of home automation. Our system relies on a low power WS&AN that employs energy harvesting techniques to maximize node lifetime and an embedded residential gateway that offers user interaction and secure connectivity to the outside world. the advantages of our system are its scalability, low power, self sufficiency and versatility. © 2011 IEEE.

parallelizing complex applications even for well-behaved parallel systems often calls for different parallelization approaches within the same application. In this paper we discuss three applications from the literature that for both reasons of efficiency and expressive convenience benefit from a mixture of task and more tightly coupled data parallelism. these three applications, namely Quicksort, list ranking, and LU factorization with partial pivoting, are paradigms for recursive, mixed-mode parallel algorithms that can neither easily nor efficiently be expressed in either a purely data-parallel or a purely task-parallel fashion. As a solution we present a shared-memory programming framework that allows tasks to dynamically spawn subtasks with a given degree of parallelism for implementing tightly coupled parallel parts of the algorithm. All three paradigmatic applications can naturally be expressed in this framework, which in turn can be supported by an extended, non-conventional work-stealing scheduler, which we also briefly sketch. Using our new algorithm for work-stealing with deterministic team-building we are able to show, beyond the improved, more natural implementability, in many cases better scalability and sometimes absolute performance than with less natural implementations based on pure task-parallelism executed with conventional work-stealing. Detailed performance results using an Intel 32-core system substantiate our claims. © 2011 IEEE.

Machine learning techniques have facilitated image retrieval by automatically classifying and annotating images with keywords. Among them Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are used extensively due to their generalization properties. SVM was initially designed for binary classifications. However, most classification problems arising in domains such as image annotation usually involve more than two classes. Notably SVM training is a computationally intensive process especially when the training dataset is large. this paper presents MRMSVM, a distributed multiclass SVM algorithm for large scale image annotation which partitions the training dataset into smaller binary chunks and train SVM in parallel using a cluster of computers. MRMSVM is evaluated in an experimental environment showing that the distributed Multiclass SVM algorithm reduces the training time significantly while maintaining a high level of accuracy in classifications. © 2011 IEEE.

Regular expression matching is widely used in many network applications to analyze suspicious traffic against predefined signatures, and to discover anomalous events. Deterministic Finite Automaton (DFA), which recognizes a set of regular expressions, is the basic data structure to scan input traffic byte by byte. though DFA meets the requirement of real-time processing of network traffic, constructing a combined DFA for a set of regular expression signatures is very time-consuming, especially when the signature set is large. To attack this problem, we propose new strategies to accelerate DFA construction. the basic idea of our method is to construct the combined DFA by hierarchical merging of the DFAs of each single regular expression. Our method runs in O(ΙQΙΙ∑Ι ln n) time, which is substantially superior to the time complexity O(ΙQΙΙ∑Ι(∑ni=1ΙQiΙ)2) of classical subset construction algorithm[1]. Experiment on real signatures from open-source systems, such as L7-filter, BRO and SNORT, demonstrates that our method performs 45 times faster than the subset construction algorithm on average. © 2011 IEEE.

In both the regular and the irregular MPI collectives there is a correspondence between the argument lists and certain MPI derived datatypes. As a means to address and alleviate well-known memory and performance scalability problems in the irregular (or vector) collective interface definitions of MPI we propose to push this correspondence to its natural limit, and replace the interfaces of the MPI collectives with a new set of interfaces that specify all data sizes and displacements solely by means of derived datatypes. this reduces the number of collective (communication and reduction) interfaces from 16 to 10 (in the extreme to only 7), significantly generalizes the operations, unifies regular and irregular collective interfaces, makes it possible to decouple certain algorithmic decisions from the collective operation, and moves the interface scalability issue from the collective interfaces to the MPI derived datatypes. To complete the proposal we discuss the memory scalability of the derived datatypes and suggest a number of new datatypes for MPI, some of which may be of independent interest. Finally, we introduce additional, new functionality for scalable construction of datatypes as needed for the new collective interfaces. We give examples throughout of the benefits of this alternative set of collective interfaces. It is argued that an implementation can straightforwardly be undertaken within any reasonable MPI implementation. © 2011 IEEE.

In the last decade the shift of information and communication systems from a purely system level to the social level is already observable. However, the integration of social / cognitive aspects into so-called social computing is not an easy task due to conceptual differences in domains. A Socio-Technical System (STS) is a recent term intending to differentiate between a social system mediated by natural sciences or information technology. Even if the mediation of social / cognitive aspects is "theoretically" governed by technology, the gap between "socio" and "technical" is historical and huge. Furthermore the fact that with every passing year, the technical systems become more intelligent with respect to interaction with people and their pervasiveness, a special attention should be given to modelling both social and technical components and interaction between them. For example while modelling (and simulating) an emergency situation from a public facility, the possible availability of technology at the environment (e.g. situation-aware exit signs, interactive displays, etc.) and personal (e.g. cell phones, specialized wearables etc.) level, along with its social / cognitive influence must not be overruled. To address this challenge, we have integrated cognitive decision making model abstracted from psychological, neurological and social theories of human behaviour during evacuation situations into CA based simulation. Keeping focus on a scenario in which a small population of agents is technologically assisted, some of the most interesting finding are: (i) the inclusion of a representative and authentic social behaviour model into modelling a socio-technical system essentially produces fundamental differences in methodologies, (ii) the technologically assisted agents emerge as leaders during evacuation changing the intentions of many agents within their influence (iii) even a small population of such leaders in sufficiently large population is enough to guarantee

this paper describes a model of a hierarchical, heterogeneous knowledge-base. the proposed model consists of an associative level that is implemented by a Kanerva-like sparse distributed memory (SDM) and a semantic level realized by a knowledge-representation scheme based on the Fuzzy Petri Net theory. the levels are interconnected with forward and backward connections that are used for the robust initialization of multi-reasoning procedures (inheritance, recognition and intersection search) at the semantic level. Multi-reasoning supports reasoning for an unknown concept (i.e., a concept that is not defined at the semantic level), parallel reasoning for more than one concept that is obtained by forward connections from the associative level and used for multiple initialization, and the chaining of associative information retrieval and the reasoning process using forward and backward connections. An example of the initialization of the multi-inheritance procedure is given.© 2011 IEEE.
