this paper presents an alternative method to equalise chromatic dispersion (CD) within a high speed single mode fibre (SMF). the CD is due to the phase delay within the SMF. the CD contributes to the degradation of the quality of the optical pulse propagating in the SMF at high speed which results in pulse spreading. this phenomena will lead to inter-symbol interference (ISI), thus increasing the bit error rate (BER) of the system. In this paper a CD equalisation technique that utilises a cascaded parallel optical all pass filter (Cp-OAPF) is proposed. the Cp-OAPF acts as a phase equaliser which will invert the effect of SMF's phase delay. the Cp-OAPF is based on a class of digital all-pass filter. Simulation results at BER of 10 -9 showed that the proposed equaliser can increase in the repeater-less length of a point-to-point optical communication system by 7 times with non-return to zero rectangular and Gaussian pulses at 10Gb/s. the signal-to-noise ratio improvement of 19.2 dB and 23.2 dB are achieved for rectangular and Gaussian pulses respectively for error free BER.

Microcellular network will have to become a proper choice for broadband mobile network in future mobile multimedia due to its high re-use radio resource. this paper discusses packet multiplexing control of connected micro-cells as a virtual single cell to support fast handover in such a micro-cell network. Adjacent cells are grouped into a multicast group to create an LMC (Logical Macro Cell) and active MTs (Mobile Terminal) in the same serving BS are assigned to an identical LMC. When an MT changes its connection to a new cell, its LMC also switches over to a new LMC withthe purpose of reserving resources for future handover of the MT. Switch-over of LMC creates a virtual single cell environment for each MT. the switchover time is only the processing time in which the central node (CN) changes in rows of the LMC table. the wireless segment of the LMC offers radio connections over parallel polling to each terminal instead of contention to support for fast mobility between micro-cells. By reserving resource for each MT in each BS (base station) through scheduled parallel polling, the handover between micro-cells is performed at the answer of the polling in a new cell. thus it is not necessary to stop connection and contend with other MTs for gaining channels. Our simulation results prove that the parallel polling and the LMC switchover work well to offer smooth high-data rate to fast mobile users without handover latency though the radio resources is reduced somewhat for reservation. OMNeT++ simulation tool is used for our simulation performance.

the technologies and ideas that underlie e-Science in providing seamless access to distributed resources is a compelling one and has been applied in many research domains. the clinical domain is one area in particular that, in principle has much to be gained from e-Science approaches. Until now however it has largely been the case that the practical realization, support and adoption of e-Science solutions in a clinical setting have been fraught by many hurdles. Not least is trust of technologies and their use in the field as opposed to demonstrator projects with non-real clinical data to prove the merit of e-Science ideas and solutions. the National e-Science Centre (NeSC– ***) at the University of Glasgow have had a large number of clinical projects that have moved from the proof of concept demonstrators through to real systems used by real clinical researchers in real clinical trials and studies. In this paper we focus on the software systems that have been developed to support two major international post-genomic clinical research projects in the area of rare diseases: the European Union 7th Framework (EuroDSD – ***) project and the European Science Foundation (ENSAT – ***) project. We outline the software platforms that have been rolled out and identify how the e-Science vision of secure access to clinical resources has been realized and subsequently used.

CCGrid' 2007, the 7th IEEE internationalsymposium on Cluster computing and the Grid was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 14 17, 2007. CCGrid has become a premium conference of truly international coverage, bringing together researchers and practitioners, enabling them to share their insight, results, and experience in the multi-faceted areas of Grid and cluster computing. the whole conference experience consisted of more than its strong technical program and also included three keynote speeches by scholars. there were seven workshops on emerging topics like the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable computing Doctoral symposium, Agent-based Grid computing and Context-Awareness and Mobility in Grid computing. the paper by K. EL Maghraoui focused on adaptability for iterative MPI applications as adaptability enables a parallel application's execution system to split or merge processes, thereby modifying the executed program's granularity.

this paper describes an approach for conformance testing of mobile and distributed systems. the approach is based on kiltera - a novel, high-level language supporting the description and execution of models of concurrent, mobile, distributed, and timed computation. In our approach, a kiltera model of the system is constructed from a high-level model which describes system behavior using, e.g., a suitable UML profile. Check points are identified in the implementation under test (IUT) and the kiltera model and both are instrumented appropriately at these check points. During execution, relevant information flows from the IUT to the kiltera model which signals any non-conformance detected. Unique features of our approach include the support for mobility, distribution, time, dynamic creation and deletion of agents, and distributed monitoring. We describe the approach and a prototype implementation using a running example for illustration. Results of first, preliminary experiments are reported. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Doing Quality Assurance work on Debian, a Linux distribution with more than 12000 packages, requires an impressive amount of computing power, which is usually not available for its developers. In this article, we report on the development of an infrastructure to run quality-assurance tasks on Debian using the Grid'5000 experimental platform. In particular, we focus on the problem of rebuilding all packages in Debian from source. We describe the details of this task, and the infrastructure we developed, with scalability and robustness in mind. the results we obtained are then presented, and we discuss possible improvements and lessons we learnt in the process, which might be useful in the context of other large-scale experiments. Functional and non-functional concerns require different programming effort, different techniques and different methodologies when attempting to program efficient parallel/distributed applications. In this work we present a "programmer oriented" methodology based on formal tools that permits reasoning about parallel/distributed program development and refinement. the proposed methodology is semi-formal in that it does not require the exploitation of highly formal tools and techniques, while providing a palatable and effective support to programmers developing parallel/distributed applications, in particular when handling non-functional concerns.

this edition of IEEE Latin America Transactions brings up a collection of the best papers presented during the seventhinternational Information and Telecommunication Technologies symposium (I2TS), which took place from December 3r to 5(th) 2008, in Foz do Igua, Brazil. the Technical Committee Program of I2TS considered three best papers among the entire proceedings of I2TS 2008, which was composed by 121 works. the best papers represent the finest work published in I2TS, serving as an example of the investigation that is done in the Information and Telecommunication areas.

Withthe increasing emphasis on exploiting concurrency efficiently and correctly, the lack of suitable pedagogical material for teaching concurrency is a growing problem. In this paper, we summarize a recently concluded class as well as some independent projects in the area of concurrency and multi-core computingthat offer some insights to address this problem. We examine background papers, the teaching of low level concurrency, and the teaching of threading and message passing. the use of dynamic formal verification tools in a class setting is discussed in some detail. We conclude with a summary of pedagogical material being assembled, including exercises from a popular textbook on MPI solved using our dynamic verifier ISP. Our observation is that the teaching of concurrency is greatly facilitated by the use of dynamic push-button formal verification tools that can handle non-trivial concurrent programs. Given the growing number of publications on how to teach concurrency as well as employ new programming approaches, our work addresses the somewhat neglected topic of using modern dynamic formal verification methods within the context of widely used concurrency approaches and libraries.
