Cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS) is a novel paradigm that enables software developers to create (develop or integrate), deploy, execute, and manage business applications, using a service provided by a third party. the diversity and heterogeneity of the existing PaaS offerings raises several interoperability challenges. the actual Platform as a Service market is still quite young, chaotic and highly fragmented, dominated by a few providers which use and promote incompatible standards and formats. this introduces adoption barriers due to the lock-in issues that prevent the portability of data and software from one PaaS to another. Moreover, software developers do not only need to deploy applications into a specific Cloud platform, but also to migrate applications from one Cloud platform to another, and to manage distributed applications spanning multiple PaaS. In this paper, we present a multi-cloud PaaS management as a result of the Cloud4SOA European project that addresses these challenges.

In this paper, we seek analytical approximate solutions of a problem coupling the neutronics equation and the thermal equation (using incomplete Elliptic integrals), and we compare these analytical approximate solutions to a numerical method for the coupled problem, using a Crank-Nicolson scheme for the thermal equation and an generalized eigenvalue problem for the neutronics equation. Both the approximate analytical methods and the numerical method amount to finding the multiplication factor k(eff) (k(eff)(-l) f is the generalized eigenvalue) as the unique solution of an equation. All methods yield values of k(eff) close to each other with a difference of magnitude 10(-7), which is much better than what is generally needed in neutronics.

the development of software systems for scientific exploration and discovery through computation has an important issue to address: the management of underlying computational steps. To support composition of Web and Grid services, standard workflow languages and workflow execution engines were built but management capabilities are not yet entirely explored. In the context of Grid services, we propose a solution for controlling the execution of workflows without the assistance of a user interface oriented workflow engine. We also investigate the capabilities that our solution may offer for related features such as dynamic retrieval of partial results, steering and provenance.

this article provides algorithms for systems of approximate linear partial differential equations that exploit exact subsystems. Such exact systems have rational function coefficients over Q and can be reduced to forms (e.g. differential Grobner bases) by a finite number of differentiations and eliminations using available computer implementations. We will use the rifsimp algorithm in Maple for this purpose. Such algorithms use solvers based on orderings (rankings) of their derivatives, are coordinate dependent, and are prone to instability when applied to approximate input. In contrast, our Geometric Involutive Form algorithm, uses a sequence of geometric differentiations (prolongations) and projections to complete approximate linear systems to geometric involutive form. In particular, it uses numerical linear algebra (especially the SVD) to monitor dimension criteria for termination. However, this latter method can be expensive as the size of the matrices rapidly increases with the number of variables and order of derivatives involved. Approximate differential systems in applications often have exact subsystems and this motivated us to develop the hybrid method described in this article. the first step of the method is to partition the input into an exact subsystem and an approximate subsystem. the exact subsystem is reduced by using our rifsimp algorithm. the reduced exact subsystem is used to simplify the approximate subsystem. the previous partition, reduction and simplification steps are repeated until no new exact equations are found. then the reduced exact subsystem is used to simplify prolongations of the approximate subsystem. Checking that the jointly prolonged system is geometrically involutive is done by computing dimension criteria of the simplified prolonged approximate system and using the differential Hilbert function of the reduced exact system. Asteroseismology is an emerging branch of astrophysics that studies the interior and global parameters of pulsating stars, based on their natural oscillation frequency. this work proposes different methods for increasing the performance of LNAWENR (Linear NonAdiabatic NonRadial WavEs), a computational intensive pulsational model that studies stars based on their seismic properties. As part of the asteroseismological package ROMOSC, LNAWENR is one of the several non-adiabatic models in use now by the international astrophysics and space science community. the model was implemented to study data from NASA's CoRoT mission. the improved version aims to be used for NASA's KEPLER mission. In this context, we employed several serial and parallel code optimizations. the programming frameworks used for the parallel optimizations are OpenMP and OpenCL.

Evolutionary algorithms have become an important problem solving methodology among many researchers working in the area of computational intelligence. the population based collective learning process; self adaptation and robustness are some of the key features of evolutionary algorithm when compared to other global optimization techniques. Due to its simplicity, evolutionary algorithms have been widely accepted for solving several important practical applications in engineering, business, commerce etc. However, experimental evidence had indicated cases where evolutionary algorithms are inefficient at fine tuning solutions, but better at finding global basins of attraction. the efficiency of evolutionary training can be improved significantly by hybridization of some search procedures or incorporating some heuristics into the evolution process. In this talk, we will review how particle swarm optimization algorithm and bacterial foraging algorithm could be used to optimize the performance of evolutionary algorithms. the performance of the hybridized algorithms will be illustrated using some benchmark problems

Over the last decade, Cloud environments have gained significant attention by the scientific community, due to their flexibility in the allocation of resources and the various applications hosted in such environments. Recently, high performance computing applications are migrating to Cloud environments. Efficient methods are sought for solving very large sparse linear systems occurring in various scientific fields such as Computational Fluid Dynamics, N-Body simulations and Computational Finance. Herewith, the parallel multi-projection type methods are reviewed and discussions concerning the implementation issues for IaaS-type Cloud environments are given. Moreover, phenomena occurring due to the "noisy neighbor" problem, varying interconnection speeds as well as load imbalance are studied. Furthermore, the level of exposure of specialized hardware residing in modern CPUs through the different layers of software is also examined. Finally, numerical results concerning the applicability and effectiveness of multi-projection type methods in Cloud environments based on OpenStack are presented.

For most applications, taking full advantage of the memory system is key to achieving good performance on GPUs. In this paper, we introduce register caching, a novel idea where registers of multiple threads are combined and used as a shared, last level, manually managed cache for the contributing threads. this method is enabled by the shuffle instruction recently introduced in Nvidia's Kepler GPU architecture, which allows threads in the same warp to exchange data directly, previously only possible by going through shared memory. We evaluate our proposal with a stencil computation benchmark, achieving speedups of up to 2.04, compared to using shared memory on a GTX680 GPU. Stencil computations form the core of many scientific applications, which can therefore benefit from our proposal. Furthermore, our method is not limited to stencil computations, but is applicable to any application with a predictable memory access pattern suitable for manual caching.

the ability to run and manage multi-clouds applications (i.e., applications that run on multiple clouds) allows exploiting the peculiarities of each cloud solution and hence improves non-functional aspects such as availability, cost, and scalability. Monitoring such multi-clouds applications is fundamental to track the health of the applications themselves and of their underlying infrastructures as well as to decide when and how to adapt their behaviour and deployment. It is clear that, not only the application but also the corresponding monitoring infrastructure should dynamically adapt in order to (i) be optimized to the application context (e.g., adapting the frequency of monitoring to reduce network load);(ii) to enable the co-evolution of the monitoring platform together with the cloud application (e.g., if a service migrates from one provider to another, the monitoring activities have to be adapted accordingly). In this paper, we present a model-based platform for the dynamic provisioning, deployment, and monitoring of multi-clouds applications whose monitoring activities can be automatically and dynamically adapted to best fit with the actual deployment of the application.

We propose an architecture for a storage system of surveillance videos. Such systems have to handle massive amounts of incoming video streams and relatively few requests for replay. In such a system load (i.e., write requests) scheduling is essential to guarantee performance. Large-scale data-storage system (LSDSS) is an emerging hosting facility for video-storage, which has a very high number of writes while most of the videos are never or rarely watched. We discuss the design and implementation of LSDSS and load scheduling in autonomous storage environments called datacenters in LSDSS. A datacenter (DC) is the basic concept in our LSDSS, which has the self-management system to store data efficiently. A LSDSS consists of many DCs organized in a hierarchy fashion, thereby decentralizing load scheduling tasks. Because DC has a simple design, load scheduling is particularly suited for implementation on a real-time video surveillance and allows to make scheduling decisions. We also discuss experimental results that clearly show the advantage of load scheduling over the widely known base load scheduling.
