Textual entailment recognition (RTE) is the task of deciding, when given two text fragments, whether the meaning of one text is entailed (can be inferred) from the other text. Last year, we built our first Textual Entailment (TE) system, with which we participated in the RTE3 competition. the main idea of this system is to transform the hypothesis making use of extensive semantic knowledge from sources like DIRT, WordNet, Wikipedia and acronyms database. Additionally, the system applies complex grammar rules for rephrasing in English and uses the results of a module we built to acquire the extra background knowledge needed. In the first part, we presented the system architecture and the results, whose best run ranked 3 rd in RTE3 among 45 participating runs of 26 *** second part of the paper presents the manner in which we adapted the TE system in order to include it in a Question Answering (QA) system. the aim of using the TE system as a module in the general architecture of a QA system is to improve the ranking between possible answers for questions in which the answer type is Measure, Person, Location, Date and Organization.

this paper presents a new Web service composition method which combines the AI planning graph technique with an immune-inspired algorithm to find the optimal composition solution. Simultaneously with the planning graph construction, a matrix of semantic links is built to store the semantic links established between the services on different layers of the graph. the planning graph and the matrix of semantic links represent the main building blocks of our immune-inspired technique for finding the optimal composition solution. We use a multi-criteria function which evaluates the composition solution in terms of its QoS attributes and the quality of the semantic match between the services involved in the solution. In order to validate our approach to automatically compose Web services, we have developed an experimental framework that integrates the planning graph composition approach and the immune-inspired selection technique. We have performed our experiments on a set of Web services from two domains.

Segmentation of medical images is an important area of research that can be used in prognosis prediction and patient treatment. Due to the high variability of data, the task to develop an accurate segmentation method remains challenging. In this paper we address the problem of cerebral metastases segmentation and focus our analysis on the BrainMetShare dataset. In order to enhance the metastases segmentation performance we propose a two stage method. In the first stage we employ a transfer learning procedure where we train an Unet model on the similar task of low and high grade gliomas segmentation provided by the BraTS dataset and then fine-tune the model for solving our problem of cerebral metastases segmentation. In the second stage we use GrabCut to refine the metastases segmentation masks obtained from the first stage. In the experimental evaluation we show that our two stage method based on transfer learning and GrabCut progressively outperforms the baseline model trained only on cerebral metastases data from BrainMetShare.

A Maple implementation of partitioned matrices is described. A recursive block data structure is used, with all operations preserving the block abstraction. these include constructor functions, ring operations such as addition and product, and inversion. the package is demonstrated by calculating the PLU factorization of a block matrix.

Regular data compression converts a sequence of symbols into a sequence of strings (descriptions), assigning the shortest descriptions to the most frequent symbols produced by the data source. By contrast, here we consider the compression of a sequence of symbols to a sequence of multisets. this is relevant if the communication channel does not preserve order (positioning) of the transmitted letters, as is the case in many biological contexts; for example, if you regard the passage of a multiset of molecules through a blood vessel as an information transfer. We introduce the concept of submultiset-free codes, a counterpart to the existing concept of prefix-free codes. We derive a theorem about the structure of optimal submultiset codes for uniform random variables and we describe an algorithm for constructing them.

the main purpose of the research work presented in this paper was to model and implement a workflow based architecture for Web service composition which allows the integration of composed Web services in a Grid middleware. the composed Web services are integrated as computational nodes in a workflow description and execution platform. To prove the presented theoretical concepts, a prototype was also implemented based on the gProcess application in which the Web services are integrated as satellite image operators in workflows used for processing satellite images. the urge for such a research work was driven by the lack of flexibility offered by the static deployed applications and the need of a dynamic approach given by Web services developed and deployed all over around the world. the proposed solution is a semi-automatic Web service composition based on predefined templates and realized in several steps: automatically search in a private registry, perform semantic annotation, automatically bind information of founded services and create a BPEL business process. this solution offers a dynamic approach and allows a high degree of reusability and interoperability in a Grid medium.

Image processing applications include image classification, image segmentation, image synthesis and many others. Each such task depends on extracting an effective set of features to characterize the images, and texture analysis has proven to output some of the most valuable features. For this reason, image texture analysis has been an actively researched topic and numerous methods have been proposed, each of them having its advantages and limitations. In practical applications, it is impossible to ensure that all images have the same scale, rotation, viewpoint, etc., so texture analysis methods should ideally be invariant. this study inspects the most commonly used operators for extracting textural features, tests their accuracy in classifying the Kylberg texture dataset, and evaluates their invariant properties by the means of various synthetically transformed images. By conducting this analysis, we identified the shortcomings of the existing approaches, and will be able to address them in our future work by formulating some improvements to existing operators to increase their accuracy and to make them invariant to a larger set of transformations.

the advent of cloud computing is an opportunity to companies offering client-server services to migrate to a Software as a Service (SaaS) kind of business model. this kind of business model is based on having companies offering services on the cloud accessible by means of web interfaces and protocols. this comes in opposition to the traditional (client-server) model in which software packages need to be downloaded, installed and maintained directly by clients. therefore, the SaaS could allow the definition of high level services, removing the burden of configuring and managing servers from clients. In the point of view of the service providers, this transition is not easy. Concerns such as vendor neutral design, scalability, (self-)adaptation and monitoring of running applications need to be dealt with. the MODAClouds FP7 EU project proposes to deal with all these challenges and it is going to use ModelioSaaS as a use case. ModelioSaaS is a software as a service product to be offered by SOFTEAM by means of the migration of its existing client-server based products. the main contributions of this paper are therefore providing an account, from the industrial point of view, of the context surrounding this migration and the constraints it needs to comply to. these constraints will be presented in the form of functional and non-functional requirements along with their rationale. this paper presents our current view of the architecture of ModelioSaaS that will enable this move and the gaps that we intend to fill be means of the MODAClouds platform.
