inductive logic programming (ilp) systems use logic programming languages like Prolog as computational models. Expressivity of these languages is often built on fixed Herbrand vocabulary, thus requires encoding arbitrarily large structures as nested functions. However, most learning systems process structures directly on relations and cannot handle function symbols. To solve this, we propose an alternative problem framework to measure the expressivity of learning systems, by considering any Turing computable mapping between arbitrarily large graphs, namely Computable Relations Mapping (CRM). CRM is a useful framework for its connection to Turing machine and straightforward representation of most computational tasks. then, we propose a minimal CRM-complete fragment of Horn clauses with default negation and function symbols, by constructing programs corresponding to all CRMs. the correctness is given by combining a checked implementation and some proof. Since smaller rules can be more efficiently searched and analyzed, we consider it a potentially better representation and reasoning model for expressive inductive inference systems. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

the gRS-ilp model (generic Rough Set inductive logic programming model) provides a framework for inductive logic programming when the setting is imprecise and any induced logic program will not be able to distinguish between certain positive and negative examples. However, in this rough setting, where it is inherently not possible to describe the entire data with 100% accuracy, it is possible to definitively describe part of the data with 100% accuracy. the gRS-ilp model is extended in this paper to motifs in strings. An illustrative experiment is presented using the ilp system Progol on transmembrane domains in amino acid sequences.

In this paper, we present a new method based on nonmonotonic learning where the inductive logic programming (ilp) algorithm is used twice and apply our method to acquire graphic design knowledge. Acquiring design knowledge is a challenging task because such knowledge is complex and vast. We thus focus on principles of layout and constraints that layouts must satisfy to realize automatic layout generation. Although we do not have negative examples in this case, we can generate them randomly by considering that a page with just one element moved is always wrong. Our nonmonotonic learning method introduces a new predicate for exceptions. In our method, the ilp algorithm is executed twice, exchanging positive and negative examples. From our experiments using magazine advertisements, we obtained rules characterizing good layouts and containing relationships between elements. Moreover, the experiments show that our method can learn more accurate rules than normal ilp can.

inductive logic programming (ilp) is a relatively new method in machine learning. Compared with the traditional attribute-value learning methods, it has some advantages (the stronger expressive power and the ease of using background knowledge), but also some weak points. One particular issue is that the theory, techniques and experiences are much less mature for ilp to deal with imperfect data than in the traditional attribute-value learning methods. this paper applies the Rough Set theory to ilp to deal with imperfect data, which occur in large real-world applications. We investigate various kinds of imperfect data in ilp and identify a subset of them to tackle. Namely, we concentrate on incomplete background knowledge (where essential predicates/clauses are missing) and on indiscernible data (where some examples belong to both sets of positive and negative training examples), proposing rough problem settings for these cases. the rough settings relax the strict requirements in the standard normal problem setting for ilp, so that rough but useful hypotheses can be induced from imperfect data.

this research is aimed at giving a bridge between the two research areas, inductive logic programming and Computational Learning. We focus our attention on four fittings (learning methods) invented in the two areas: Saturant Generalization, V*-operation with Generalization, Bottom Generalization, and Inverse Entailment. Firstly we show that each of them can be represented as an instance of a common schema. Secondly we compare the four fittings. By modifying Jung's result, we show that all definite hypotheses derived by V *-operation with Generalization can be derived by Bottom Generalization and vice versa, but that some hypotheses cannot be derived by Saturant Generalization. We also give a hypotheses of a general clause which can be derived Bottom Generalization but not by V* -operation with Generalization. We show Inverse Entailment is more powerful than other three fittings both in definite and in general clausal logic. In our papers presented at the IJCAI'97 workshops and the 7th ilp workshop, Bottom Generalization was called "Inverse Entailment," but after the workshops we found it differs from Muggleton's original Inverse Entailment. We renamed it "Bottom Generalization" in order to reduce confusion and allow fair comparison of the fitting to others. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

Schema-based logic program transformation has proven to be an eective technique for the optimisation of programs. this paper results from the research that began by investigating the suggestions in [11] to construct a more general database of transformation schemas for optimising logic programs at the declarative level. the proposed transformation schemas fully automate accumulator introduction (also known as descending computational generalisation), tupling generalisation (a special case of structural generalisation), and duality laws (which are extensions to relational programming of the rst duality law of the fold operators in functional programming). the schemas are proven correct. A prototype schema-based transformation system is evaluated. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.
