this paper summarises the agent Contest 2008, organised in association withpromas'08. the aim of the contest is to stimulate research in the area of multi-agentsystems by identifying key problems and collecting suitable benchmarks that can serve as milestones for evaluating new tools, models, and techniques to develop multi-agentsystems. the first two editions of this contest were organised in association with CLIMA conference series and the third edition was organised in association with ProTWAS'07. Based on the experiences from the previous three editions ([16,17,18]), the contest scenario has been changed to test the participating multi-agentsystems on their abilities to coordinate and cooperate. We wanted to emphasise team work and team strategy issues in a dynamic environment where teams compete for the same resources. Seven groups from Iran, Ireland, England, France, Germany, Poland, and Turkey did participate in this years contest.

We consider the programming of multiagentsystems from an architectural perspective. Our perspective emphasizes the autonomy and heterogeneity of agents, the components of multiagentsystems, and focuses on how to specify their interconnections in terms of high-level protocols. In this manner, we show how to treat the programming of a multiagent system as an architectural endeavor, leaving aside the programming of individual agents who might feature in a multiagent system as a secondary concern.

Although the role of environment in designing and engineering multi-agentsystems (MAS) has been largely acknowledged and explored in literature, no formal model has been developed so far to rigorously define the main features of environment in the context of MAS programming, in particular to be integrated and exploited with existing agentprogramming languages/frameworks and related formalisations. Accordingly, in this paper we present a formalisation of a general-purpose model for environment programming, based on the notion of artifact as introduced in the A&A meta-model and implemented by the CArtAgO framework. Although based on the A&A meta-model, we argue that the model can be useful to understand and analyse aspects that are important for environment programming in general.

In this paper, we present our experiences using the Jason agent-oriented programming language to develop a complex multi-agent application. We highlight a number of shortcomings in the current design of the language when building complex agents, and propose revisions to the language to allow the development of modular programs that facilitate code reuse and independent development. In particular, we propose a mechanism for modular construction of agents from functionally encapsulated components, and discuss alterations to the belief base language to enable more robust software engineering.

A multitude of agent-oriented software engineering frameworks exist, most of which are developed by the academic multi-agentsystems community. However, these frameworks often impose programming paradigms on their users that are challenging to learn for engineers who are used to modern high-level programming languages such as JavaScript and Python. To show how the adoption of agent-oriented programming by the software engineering mainstream can be facilitated, we provide a lean JavaScript library prototype for implementing reasoning-loop agents. the library focuses on core agentprogramming concepts and refrains from imposing further restrictions on the programming approach. To illustrate its usefulness, we show how the library can be applied to multi-agentsystems simulations on the web, deployed to cloud-hosted function-as-a-service environments, and embedded in Python-based data science tools.

this paper presents jacamo-web, an interactive programming IDE for developing multi-agentsystems (MAS). the standard programming method usually follows the sequence of compile, link and execute the application. Alternatively, the so-called interactive programming provides a way to modify a system while it is running. Besides saving developing time, it maintains the system's availability since the application is kept running while it is being changed. To illustrate jacamo-web interactive functions, we have developed a MAS for the financial market. It checks data of companies and applies known formulae to suggest whether to buy assets or not.

multi-agentsystems consist of a number of interacting autonomous agents, each of which is capable of sensing its environment (including other agents) and deciding to act in order to achieve its own objectives. In order to guarantee the overall design objectives of multi-agentsystems, the behavior of individual agents and their interactions need to be regulated and coordinated [23,29,30]. the development of multi-agentsystemstherefore requires programming languages that facilitate the implementation of individual agents as well as mechanisms that control and regulate individual agents̵7; behaviors. It also requires computational tools to test and verify programs that implement multi-agentsystems [7].
