this paper presents a hierarchical, statistical topic model for representing the grasp preshapes of a set of objects. Observations provided by teleoperation are clustered into latent affordances shared among all objects. Each affordance defines a joint distribution over position and orientation of the hand relative to the object and conditioned on visual appearance. the parameters of the model are learned using a Gibbs sampling method. After training, the model can be used to compute grasp preshapes for a novel object based on its visual appearance. the model is evaluated experimentally on a set of objects for its ability to generate grasp preshapes that lead to successful grasps, and compared to a baseline approach.

the evaluation and management of sensor uncertainty is particularly necessary in a noisy multi-sensor context. In this paper, focusing on the potential of distributed coordination among sensor nodes based on the built-in association between wireless sensor networks and multi-agent systems, meanwhile in a rough set technique sense of uncertainty, we show how an adaptive distributed coordination framework for a hierarchy of sensor data uncertainty performs local data fusion to increase the certainty of real-time sensor readings coherently, makes global rational decisions under imprecision and partial truth, and reconciles the conflicts somewhat, thus evolving adaptive and robust sensor uncertainty handling systems. Implementation results for an example sensor field demonstrate the application of our proposed approach.

A mixed hardware/software architecture for CABAC decoding in H.264/AVC is proposed in this paper. For the purpose of flexibility, ctxldx calculation process is implemented by software, while others are implemented by hardware. An optimized parallel decoding architecture that allows decoding two binary symbols at one clock cycle is designed to enhance overall decoding performance. An efficient scheme of accessing context models is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed architecture improves the decoding performance by 20% compared to conventional scheme. the proposed design can achieve HDTV 1080i video processing requirement when operated at 140 MHz.

In this paper, we review a number of process algebra based formalisms that can be used for the formal specification of electronic system designs. It should be of interest to architects, engineers and researchers from the electronic design community. this paper also covers various formal techniques (process algebra based) for analysis of electronic system designs. Furthermore, we devote some space in this paper to an brief introduction of two process algebraic theories/frameworks SystemC FL and PAFSV that can be regarded as the formal languages of SystemC and SystemVerilog respectively.

User query is an element that specifies an information need, but it is not the only one. Studies in literature have found many contextual factors that strongly influence the interpretation of a query. Recent studies have tried to consider the user's interests by creating a user profile. However, a single profile for a user may not be sufficient for a variety of queries of the user. In this study, we propose to use query-specific contexts instead of user-centric ones, including context around query and context within query. the former specifies the environment of a query such as the domain of interest, while the latter refers to context words within the query, which is particularly useful for the selection of relevant term relations. In this paper, both types of context are integrated in an IR model based on language modeling. Our experiments on several TREC collections show that each of the context factors brings significant improvements in retrieval effectiveness. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Most topic models, such as latent Dirichlet allocation, rely on the bag-of-words assumption. However, word order and phrases are often critical to capturing the meaning of text in many text mining tasks. this paper presents topical n-grams, a topic model that discovers topics as well as topical phrases. the probabilistic model generates words in their textual order by, for each word, first sampling a topic, then sampling its status as a unigram or bigram, and then sampling the word from a topic-specific unigram or bigram distribution. thus our model can model "white house" as a special meaning phrase in the 'politics' topic, but not in the 'real estate' topic. Successive bigrams form longer phrases. We present experiments showing meaningful phrases and more interpretable topics from the NIPS data and improved information retrieval performance on a TREC collection.

Truly useful classes are that the knowledge and skills learned can be applied to other learning domains in the future. this concept is called "Transfer" in cognitive science. this paper adopts the viewpoints of Seneca as leading concepts. Based on these concepts, we have developed an instructional design model promoting Transfer using a method where learners develop e-Learning teaching materials themselves as a group. e also confirm the validity of this model. the learning procedure of this model uses a double loop structure in a learning cycle. the double loop structure consists of "repetition of judgment concerning instructional intention" during "repetition of group development process throughout the course". the steps of this learning cycle are as follows. 1) Project Choice, 2) Grouping of Learners, 3) Solution Search, 4) Group Development of e-Learning Teaching Materials, 5) Rehearsals of Presentation and Judgment Concerning Instructional Intention, 6) Presentation of Solutions, 7) Suggestion of Improvements and Transfer Promotion, and 8) Making of Legacy Teaching Materials end of the course. the validity of this instructional design model in promoting Transfer is confirmed in the results of causality analysis on learner questionnaires (by structural equation modeling). In addition, we expect to reduce the e-Learning teaching materials development load on teachers because of the characteristics of the learning cycle.

In this paper, we present our newly developed face expression modeling system for expression analysis and identification. Given a face image at a front view, a realistic facial model is created using our extended topographic analysis and model instantiation approach. Our facial expression modeling system consists of two major components: (1) facial feature representation usingthe coarse-to-fine multi-scale topographic primitive features and (2) an adaptive generic model individualization process based on the primal facial surface feature context. the algorithms have been tested using both static images and facial expression sequences. the usefulness of the generated expression models is validated by our 3D facial expression analysis algorithm. the accuracy of the generated expression model is evaluated by the comparison between the generated models and the range models obtained by a 3D digitizer.
