this paper proposes a new approach for recognition of task-oriented actions based on stochastic context-free grammar (SCFG). Our attention puts on actions in the Japanese tea ceremony, where the action can be described by context-free grammar. Our aim is to recognize the action in the tea services. Existing SCFG approach consists of generating symbolic string, parsing it and recognition. the symbolic string often includes uncertainty. therefore, the parsing process needs to recover the errors at the entry process. this paper proposes a segmentation method errorless as much as possible to segment an action into a string of finer actions. this method, based on an acceleration of the body motion, can produce the fine action corresponding to a terminal symbol with little error. After translating the sequence of fine actions into a set of symbolic strings, SCFG-based parsing of this set leaves small number of ones to be derived. Among the remaining strings, Bayesian classifier answers the action name with a maximum posterior probability. Giving one SCFG rule the multiple probabilities, one SCFG can recognize multiple actions

Automatically recovering human poses from visual input is useful but challenging due to variations in image space and the high dimensionality of the pose space. In this paper, we assume that a human silhouette can be extracted from monocular visual input. We compare three shape descriptors that are used in the encoding of silhouettes: Fourier descriptors, shape contexts and Hu moments. An example-based approach is taken to recover upper body poses from these descriptors. We perform experiments with deformed silhouettes to test each descriptor's robustness against variations in body dimensions, viewpoint and noise. It is shown that Fourier descriptors and shape context histograms outperform Hu moments for all deformations

Truly useful classes are that the knowledge and skills learned can be applied to other learning domains in the future. this concept is called "Transfer" in cognitive science. this paper adopts the viewpoints of Seneca as leading concepts. Based on these concepts, we have developed an instructional design model promoting Transfer using a method where learners develop e-Learning teaching materials themselves as a group. We also confirm the validity of this model. the learning procedure of this model uses a double loop structure in a learning cycle. the double loop structure consists of "repetition of judgment concerning instructional intention" during "repetition of group development process throughout the course". the steps of this learning cycle are as follows. (1) Project Choice, (2) Grouping of Learners, (3) Solution Search, (4) Group Development of e-Learning Teaching Materials, (5) Rehearsals of Presentation and Judgment Concerning Instructional Intention, (6) Presentation of Solutions, (7) Suggestion of Improvements and Transfer Promotion, and (8) Making of Legacy Teaching Materials end of the course. the validity of this instructional design model in promoting Transfer is confirmed in the results of causality analysis on learner questionnaires (by structural equation modeling). In addition, we expect to reduce the e-Learning teaching materials development load on teachers because of the characteristics of the learning cycle.

this work reports an evaluation of two educational modeling languages for the design of environments dedicated to problem-based learning (PBL) situations. Firstly, we assess the expressivity of the IMS-LD language against the requirements of the Smash case-study. Considering the limits of the IMS-LD language, we present some capabilities of the CPM language to describe other views representing contextual didactic choices (actions and events) that IMS-LD cannot afford. An analysis of the details of these CPM views has shown that they refer to learning/tutoring actions to be performed from the semantics of the electronic documents exploited in the Smash situation. Since it is a widely shared tendency to specify learning activities that take advantage of the information embedded in documents, we present some techniques, methods and tools to engineer together the educational capabilities of a corpus of electronic documents and the dynamics of learning activities enhancing the value of such a corpus. the only documents addressed by these research works are those embedding spatial and temporal information

With the rapid progression in the PC and multimedia technologies, it has become feasible to integrate multimedia technology into the teaching and learning process. What has been the conventional teacher-centred approach is now seeing a shift into one which emphasises on student-centred learning. Traditional educational content can now be transformed into interactive multimedia content by using authoring packages. It has enabled the teacher to innovate his/her instructional design by presenting the educational content in an interactive and multi- sensory manner rather than the traditional single media format. this infusion of multimedia into teaching and learning has altered instructional strategies in educational institutions. Hence, with the advent of this pervasive information technology, many colleges and universities, including those in Malaysia, are currently gearing their teaching and learning towards one which uses multimedia technology to enhance the student's learning process. With the availability of the devices such as the CD and Internet, in particular the World Wide Web, interactive learning instructions can be delivered to the learners in an asynchronous learning environment. the purpose of the research is to do a comparative study on the impact on student learning when interactive multimedia educational content is delivered to the second year students of the Film & Animation course of Multimedia University via the CD and the Web. A set of instructional materials were developed, implemented and the learners' perception and attitudes towards the use of these multimedia learning instructions recorded. Furthermore, the changing roles and the relationships between the learner and teacher in this interactive learning environment were studied. therefore, an enhanced model of Gagne's Conditions of Learning was created in the context of interactive learning will be presented in this paper.

It is possible to broadly characterize two approaches to probabilistic modeling in terms of generative and discriminative methods. Provided with sufficient training data the discriminative approach is expected to yield superior accuracy as compared to the analogous generative model since no modeling power is expended on the marginal distribution of the features. Conversely, if the model is accurate the generative approach can perform better with less data. In general it is less vulnerable to overfitting and allows one to more easily specify meaningful priors on the model parameters. We investigate multi-conditional learning - a method combining the merits of both approaches. through specifying a joint distribution over classes and features we derive a family of models with analogous parameters. Parameter estimates are found by optimizing an objective function consisting of a weighted combination of conditional log-likelihoods. Systematic experiments in the context of foreground/background pixel classification with the Microsoft-Berkeley segmentation database using mixtures of factor analyzers illustrate tradeoffs between classifier complexity, the amount of training data and generalization accuracy. We show experimentally that this approach can lead to models with better generalization performance than purely generative or discriminative approaches

the Intelligent Campus is an extension of control and monitor systems for interactive models. More than a simple 3D model, the Intelligent Campus is an interactive 3D model of a real campus that allows remote access of learning tools developed and available locally for present learning. It increases the set of learning tools and services provided by the institution and do not require re-development of tools. For access control, the Intelligent Campus implements an account mechanism that requires password for specific services and control access for distance learning classes that can occur in the campus. To manage the accesses were included levels of complexity in the virtual model that control the interactive details of an object presented to the user.

Semantic interoperability is usually provided in open environments through standards and domain ontology. the dominant standards for multimedia content and service descriptions are MPEG-7 and MPEG-21. the MPEG-7 semantic DS has powerful semantic description capabilities and supports using semantic entities specified in domain ontology in multimedia content descriptions. However, the MPEG-7/21 usage environment allows neither the specification of semantic user preferences nor the exploitation of domain knowledge and MPEG-7 semantic metadata descriptions. In addition, the users cannot explicitly specify, in the hierarchical MPEG-7/21 filtering and search preferences, the Boolean operators that should be used during content filtering to combine the hierarchy components. We think these as serious limitations and we propose a hierarchical semantic user preference model that allows for the explicit specification of Boolean operators. then, we present the application of the model in MPEG-7/21 and the model implementation within the DS-MIRF framework

this paper presents a general method for hierarchical feedback control of redundant systems, and applies it to the problem of arm movement control. A high-level feedback controller, designed using optimal control techniques, operates on a simplified virtual plant. A low-level controller is responsible for performing a feedback transformation of the physical plant into the desired virtual plant. the method is applied in the context of reaching with two realistic models of the human arm: a 2-DOF, 6-muscle model, and a 7-DOF, 14-muscle model. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme

We investigated to what degree the detection rate of the P300 in single trial event-related potentials is affected by short-term and long-term habituation effects, and we present an algorithm to eliminate eye-movement artifacts. Data from 26 subjects were collected using a visual oddball paradigm. P300 components were detected using a threshold algorithm operating on the delta band (0-4 Hz). using data from four subjects, collected over a 7 to 12 week period, it was observed that the P300 amplitude tended to decrease within a session, and also between successive sessions. However, this decrease did not affect the detection rate. the eye-movement removal algorithm was tested on simulated and actual data, and resulted in a significant increase in detection rate
