this paper generalizes the classical Jacobaeus (1950) method for evaluating the call blocking probabilities in multistage interconnection networks in the context of ATM type traffic. the aim of this generalization is twofold, first the results are extended to capture the heterogeneous, multirate and multiclass nature of the traffic; second it takes into account a path hunting algorithm inside the interconnection network. Sequential routing is chosen. the kernel of the method is computing occupancy probabilities of interstage links. An aggregation method is used for this computation. the accuracy of the method is shown by comparing with simulation. In addition to call blocking evaluation, the method may easily be extended to include other hunting algorithms.

the northbound migration of maining activities in the Emscher Region is making the open combined sewer system obsolete. this complex task requires a large number of water resources development activities in the subcatchments of tributaries. To harmonize these single activities and to evaluate their performance as part of the complete system a detailed rainfall-runoff-model of the whole Emscher system has been set up, Intensive anthropogenic impacts made it necessary to use actual system data to run advanced modeling techniques. the model set-up and first applications have been recently completed. the reconstruction of the extreme storm event of January 1995 showed excellent results. One of the major objectives is the reduction of flood levels by decentral retention measures. An evaluation matrix will be set up for the 22 potential sites for flood storage with a total volume of 4.8 million m(3). Reconstruction plans developed through interdisciplinary investigations will be ranked concerning potential for realization and water resources benefits. In the mean and long range the applicability of approaches for flood control strategies using real-time forecasting models will be checked. (C) 1997 IAWQ. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

the need for workflow management is apparent from the recent increase in the number of products (Lotus Note, SAP Business Workflow, Workmanager) that aim to support various business workflow features. However, a conceptual modeling or specification of workflow is paramount if workflows are to be managed. the authors propose using two distinct constructs to model workflow, the transaction and the task. the transaction deals withthe specification of the communication aspects of workflow, while the task deals withthe required adaptability of workflow systems. they demonstrate conceptual modeling of workflow using a real-life system in a hospital.

the paper proposes a new conflict relation called preservation. By explicitly including reverse-operations, preservation can be used independently of execution contexts to which different recovery algorithms and/or object models give rise. the paper also makes a two-dimensional (i.e., execution contexts and operations' specifications) comparison between preservation and other conflict relations. In each execution context, a formal comparison reveals that preservation-based concurrency control achieves more concurrency than that which is commutativity-based.

Computer support for large meetings has more profound effects on productivity than computer support for small meetings. this makes the design of support a particularly worthwhile task. the key design issue of "awareness for large groups" is discussed. "Query awareness" provides large groups and especially their facilitators with an overview over the group's activities. the facilitator can query the shared material on the basis of context information (time, persons, subgroup, etc.) and see the results marked in his workspace. the concept of query awareness is demonstrated withthe GO (Group Objects) prototype and an object oriented model.

Problem solving using complex mathematical models of physical phenomena requires expert knowledge in a variety of fields of computer science, such as parallel computing and numerical methods. SciAgents is a problem-solving environment to allow these models to become truly easy to use for the application scientists, much like PC-based systems. It is based on the agent-oriented model of computing. In this paper, we discuss the design and architecture of SciAgents in the context of models based on partial differential equations. We present a set of artificial/computational intelligence techniques used by the cooperating agents that constitute SciAgents, which allows them to complete the program specification and to carry out the program execution with minimal need for user intervention. SciAgents permits the non-expert user to cost-effectively and easily develop software for solving complex mathematical models. It is scalable and allows for extensive reuse of existing software.

In this paper, we first describe the generic pointing and tracking problems in a general dynamical system/state-space context. then, we analyze the information-theoretical aspects of the various uncertain signals in those problems, and establish some fundamental performance limitations those uncertainties induce, using various results and principles of modern control theory. It is shown that the introduction of 'waveform models' for uncertain signals, leading to an extended-state formulation of pointing and tracking problems, is the most effective rational means of coping withthose fundamental limitations.
this paper proposes and examines some architectural features suitable for micro-vectorprocessors. Due to the I/O-pin bottleneck, micro-vectorprocessors should save the off-chip memory bandwidth by exploiting the on-ch...

this volume gathers together selected, peer-reviewed papers presented at the BIOMAT 2020 international Symposium, which was virtually held on November 1-6, 2020, with an organization staff based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Topics covered in this volume include infection modeling, with an emphasis on different aspects of the COVID-19 and novel Coronavirus spread; a description of the effectiveness of quarantine measures via dynamic analysis of SLIR model; hemodynamic simulations in time-dependent domains; an optimal control model for the Ebola disease; and the co-existence of chaos and control in the context of biological models. Texts in agroforestry, economic development, and wastewater treatment processes complete this volume.;Held every year since 2001, the BIOMAT international Symposium gathers together, in a single conference, researchers from Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and affine fields to promote the interdisciplinary exchange of results, ideas and techniques, promoting truly international cooperation for problem discussion. the 20th edition of the BIOMAT international Symposium has received contributions by authors from 18 countries: Algeria, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Chile, China (Hong Kong), Colombia, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Morocco, Nigeria, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, USA, and Uzbekistan. Previous BIOMAT volumes with selected works from 2017, 2018, and 2019 were also published by Springer.
