this paper examines the reciprocal influence of method, process and tool as evidenced in a case study in which a requirements management method and process were defined, evolved and applied on projects. Although a tool is primarily a means of implementing a defined method, it is inevitable that the evolution of the method and process will be influenced by the chosen tool. In the case study two tools were examined. this examination yielded important insights into requirements management issues. these insights contributed to the refinement of their defined method and process, as well as helping us identify desired tool improvements that would better support the process. Based on experience with actual projects it is argued that organizational maturity is a key factor in determining when and how to introduce a method-process-tool troika. © 1996 IEEE.

ECSAM is a method for modeling and analysis of embedded computer systems and their software and the generation of their requirements. Previous ECSAM papers described its application to the conceptual modeling of systems' internals, providing white box models. the paper extends the use of ECSAM to the systematic derivation of systems' external specifications taking into consideration the behaviour of the environmental systems. the application of the method described in the paper results in a black box external model which provides the operational specifications of the system in terms of system modes and behavioral processes. the resulting external and internal system models are inherently consistent. the external specifications are translatable into operational scenarios, which can successively be transformed into operational and test requirements. the approach is demonstrated by an external analysis of a simplified home alarm system. the approach lends itself to the automatic derivation of operational and test requirements from the black box external model using CAS2E tools. © 1996 IEEE.

computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) has been recognized as a crucial enabling technology for multi-user computer-based systems, particularly in cases where synchronous human-human interaction is required between geographically dispersed users. Workflow is an emerging technology that supports complex business processes in modern corporations by allowing to explicitly define the process, and by supporting its execution in a workflow management system (WFMS). Since workflow inherently involves humans carrying out parts of the process, it is only natural to explore how to synergize these two technologies. the authors analyze the relationships between groupware and workflow management, present their general approach to integrating synchronous groupware tools into a WFMS, and conclude with an example process that was implemented in the Oz WFMS and integrated such tools. their main contribution lies in the integration and synchronization of individual groupware activities into modelled workflow processes, as opposed to being a built-in part of the workflow WFMS. © 1996 IEEE.

Distributed systems have many advantages over centralized systems. the authors focus on the novel Linda Tuple Space (TS) model designed for generative coordination in a distributed shared memory model. Currently, the object-oriented programming (OOP) model is considered a most suitable model for handling complex computer-based systems. Among the OOP languages, the C++ language is a de-facto standard for developing advanced systems. the paper takes these two orthogonal computational models and combines them in a new way to form a C++/Linda model that supports transparent distributed objects. the idea is to create an integrated model that builds on the advantages of both models while complementing whatever is missing in each one alone. A prototype of the C++/Linda model was implemented and several distributed programs were successfully run on it. © 1996 IEEE.

Geoprocessing environments require the cooperation of experts in different fields, using heterogeneous, distributed data, by means of specialized tools, among which GIS-geographic information systems-play a prominent role. However the coordination of such work is time-consuming and error-prone, since a considerable amount of data is processed in parallel, and tools are not integrated, requiring human intervention for process communication. the paper presents GEO-WASA, an environment that helps to solve this problem, by combining the GIS data-oriented view of geoprocessing with the process-centered philosophy of a workflow management system. © 1996 IEEE.

Although there has been much interest in process modelling and automation within the software industry, there have been few independent reports of experience gained an the application of this technology to industrial software processes. the paper describes the experience gained modelling an extract from a large industrial software process using a commercially available tool. the purpose of the project was to assess the maturity of process modelling technology and specifically the functionality provided by the tool used. Feedback is given on programming a software process using the underlying notation of the tool, on the issues surrounding the translation from an organisation's process notation to that of a particular tool, and on process modelling and automation issues in general. the conclusions are that while benefits can be gained from an automation effort, modelling and translation between notations can be difficult. © 1996 IEEE.

One of the old and effective ways of training is the apprenticeship way. the effectiveness of training people in the workplace comes from different reasons. One reason may be the engagement of the apprentice in real-world problems. Another reason may be the close presence of the supervisor who provides the apprentice with scaffolding along the training process. Typically, at the beginning of the process the apprentice can't perform a lot without the scaffolding support, and towards the end of the process, scaffolding fades and the apprentice is capable of performing tasks alone. Industry and academia could benefit from this kind of model to ease the transition of undergraduate students from school to work and within each community, the transition from one level to a higher one. the authors have created a computerized apprenticeship on the Web for computer science education. It integrates the modules: 'Interactive Notes', 'Case Library', 'Problem-Solving Activities' and a 'Collaboration' module. they have focused on computer graphics as the first subject. © 1996 IEEE.

the latest RISC computer chips provide very high performance though complex pipelined implementations, using independent integer and floating point units, branch prediction mechanisms, multiple instruction dispatch per clock cycle and more. For a chosen hardware configuration to deliver optimized performance, various design aspects, resulting in many possible configurations, need to be thoroughly evaluated. Among these are such issues as synchronization between pipelines, cache organization and access policy, dynamic vs static branch prediction, detecting and handling dependency among instructions in different pipeline states. Addressing the above necessitates the use of simulators that provide the design environment in which to model and evaluate candidate configurations and then fine-tune the chosen implementation. the authors describe ePASS, an experimental software based simulator for the IBM RS/6000 and its POWER architecture. they discuss the three basic modules ePASS consists of, each representing a different view of the system: An Instruction Interpreter and Register Set Simulator, a Functional Simulator and a Memory Simulator. Finally they present a simple test case program to run on the simulator, involving branch prediction and execution as well as making use of the interlock mechanism to guarantee synchronization of the branch unit with the fixed point pipeline. © 1996 IEEE.
