In this paper we present a new computationally efficient and effective technique for detection of abrupt scene changes in MPEG-4/2 compressed video sequences. We combine the de image based approach of Yeo and Liu(1) with the bit allocation change based approach of Feng, Lo and Mehrpour.(2) the bit allocation based approach has the advantage of computational simplicity since it only requires entropy decoding of the sequence. Since extraction of de images from I-Frames/Objects is simple, the de image based technique of Yeo is a good alternative for comparison of I-frames/objects. For P-frames/objects however, Yeo's algorithm requires additional computation. We find that the bit allocation change based approach is prone to false detection in comparison of intra-coded objects in MPEG-4 sequences. However, if a suspected scene/object change has been located accurately in a group of consecutive frames/objects, the bit allocation based technique quickly and accurately locates the cut point therein. this motivates us to use de image based detection between successive I-Frames/Objects to identify the sub-sequences with scene/object changes, and then use bit allocation based detection to find the cut point therein. Our technique thus has only a marginally greater complexity than the completely bit allocation based technique but has greater accuracy. It is applicable to both MPEG-2 sequences and MPEG-4 multiple-object sequences. In the MPEG-4 multiple object case, we use a weighted sum of the change in each object of the frame using the area of the object as the weight.

In India a temple is not only a structure of religious significance and celebration, but it also plays an important role in the social, administrative and cultural life of the locality. Temples have served as centers for learning Indian scriptures. Music and dance were fostered and performed in the precincts of the temples. Built at the end of the 10th century, the Brihadisvara temple signified new design methodologies. We have access to a large number of images, audio and video recordings, architectural drawings and scholarly publications of this temple. A multimedia system for this temple is being designed which is intended to be used for the following purposes: (i) to inform and enrich the general public, and (ii) to assist the scholars in their research. Such a system will also preserve and archive old historical documents and images. the large database consists primarily of images which can be retrieved using keywords, but the emphasis here is largely on techniques which will allow access using image content. Besides classifying images as either long shots or close-ups, deformable template matching is used for shape-based query by image content, and digital video retrieval. Further, to exploit the non-linear accessibility of video sequences, key frames are determined to aid the domain experts in getting a quick preview of the video. Our database also has images of several old, and rare manuscripts many of which are noisy and difficult to read. We have enhanced them to make them more legible. We are also investigating the optimal trade-off between image quality and compression ratios.

Due to improvements in image acquisition and storage technology, terabyte-sized databases of images are nowadays common. this abundance of data leads us to two basic problems: how to exploit images (image mining)? Or how to make it accessible to human beings (image retrieval)? the specificity of image mining/retrieval among other similar topics (object recognition, machine vision, computer vision, etc.) is precisely that their techniques operate on the whole collection of images, not a single one. Under these circumstances, it is obvious that the time complexity of related algorithms plays an important role. In this paper, we suggest a novel general approach applicable to image mining and retrieval, using only compact geometric structures which can be pre-computed from a database.

In the past decades the advancement in the area of database management systems shifts towards multimedia. Multimedia information is very expressive, self explanatory, narrative, etc. Now a day the development of digital media, advanced network infrastructure and the easily available consumer electronics makes the multimedia revolution to run in an alarming rate [4] Inline with the advancement of database technology that incorporates multimedia data, an open question that always rose in the technology is how to retrieve/search images in the multimedia databases. there are a huge number of research works focusing on the searching mechanisms in image databases for efficient retrieval and tried to give supplementary suggestions on the overall systems. the growing of digital medias (digital camera, digital video, digital TV, e-book, cell phones, etc.) gave rise to the revolution of very large multimedia databases, in which the need of efficient storage, organization and retrieval of multimedia contents came into question. Among the multimedia data, this survey paper focuses on the different methods (approaches) and their evaluation techniques used by many of recent research works on image retrieval system. Many researchers develop and use lots of approaches towards image retrieval. this paper, in general, classified image retrieval into text based and content based, including the newly growing ontology based image retrieval system as one focus. We address, in this paper, the challenges, techniques and evaluation methods used in image retrieval systems through a detailed look of most recent works. © 2009 IEEE.

this paper presents algorithms to deal with problems associated with indexing high-dimensional feature vectors that characterize video data. Indexing high dimensional vectors is well known to be computationally expensive. Our solution is to optimally split the high dimensional vector into a few low dimensional feature vectors and querying the system for each feature vector. this involves solving an important sub-problem: developing a model of retrieval that enables us to query the system efficiently. Once we formulate the retrieval problem in terms of a retrieval model, we present an optimality criterion to maximize the number of results using this model. the criterion is based on a novel idea of using the underlying probability distribution of the feature vectors. A branch-and-prune strategy optimized per each query, is developed. this uses the set of features derived from the optimality criterion. Our results show that the algorithm performs well, giving a speedup of a factor of 25 with respect to a linear search while retaining the same level of Recall.

In various areas of government, academia, hospitals and commerce large collections of digital images are produced. Many of these collections are the merchandise of digitizing existing collections of analogue drawings, photographs, paintings and prints. Generally the only way of searching these collections was by basically browsing or keyword indexing. Digital images databases however, open the way to content-based searching. Content Based image retrieval (CBIR) is concerned with the retrieval of images similar to a specified image, from an image repository. Content Based image retrieval (CBIR) is an efficient retrieval of relevant images from large databases based on features extracted from the image. this paper proposes a system that can be used for retrieving images related to a query image from a large set of distinct images. It follows an image segmentation based approach to extract the different features present in an image. the above features which can be stored in vectors called feature vectors and therefore these are compared to the feature vectors of query image and the image information is sorted in decreasing order of similarity. the processing of the same is done on cloud. the CBIR system is an application built on Windows Azure platform. It is a parallel processing problem where a large set of images have to be operated upon to rank them based on a similarity to a provided query image by the user. Numerous instances of the algorithm run on the virtual machines provided in the Microsoft data centers, which run Windows Azure. With the abstraction of digital video as the corresponding binary video- a process which upon numerous subjective experimentation seems to preserve (most of the) intelligibility of video content- we can pursue a precise and analytic approach to (digital video storage and retrieval) algorithm design that are based upon geometrical (morphological) intuition. the foremost and tangible general benefit of such abstraction, however, is the immediate reductions of both data and computational complexities involved in implementing various algorithms and databases. the general paradigm presented may be utilized to address all issues pertaining to video library construction including visualization, optimum feedback query generation, object recognition, e.t.c., but the primary focus of attention in this paper are the ones pertaining to detection of fast (including presence of flashlights) and gradual scene changes (such as dissolves, fades, and various special effects such as wipes). Upon simulation we observed that we can achieve performances comparable to those of others with drastic reductions in both storage and computational complexities. Furthermore, since the conversion from grayscale to binary videos can be performed directly (with minimal additional computation) in the compressed domain by thresholding on the DCT DC coefficients themselves (or by using the contour information attached to MPEG4 formats), the algorithms presented herein are ideally suited for performing fast (on-the-fly) determinations of scene change, object recognition and/or tracking, and other more intelligent tasks traditionally requiring heavy demand on computational and/or storage complexities. the fast determinations may then be used on their own merits or can be used in conjunction or complementation with other higher-layer information in the future.

video databases require that clips are represented in a compact and discriminative way, in order to perform efficient matching and retrieval of documents of interest. We present a method to obtain a video representation suitable for this task, and show how to use this representation in a matching scheme. In contrast with existing works, the proposed approach is entirely based on features and descriptors taken from the well established MPEG-7 standard. Different clips are compared using an edit distance, in order to obtain high similarity between videos that differ for some subsequences, but are essentially related to the same content. Experimental validation is performed using a prototype application that retrieves TV commercials recorded from different TV sources in real time. Results show excellent performances both in terms of accuracy, and in terms of computational performances.

In this paper we propose a method for tracking a video object in an ordered sequence of two-dimensional images, where the outcome is the trajectory of the video object throughout the time sequence of images. this method is designed to run in real-time in a synchronous video collaboration environment, and used for producing dynamic object annotations for enhanced video content understanding. A dynamic object is an object whose location or size in the video frame constantly changes due to the camera motion, the motion of its own, or both. We suggest a novel method for finding the trajectory of the object in the intermediate frames given the locations and shapes of the object in two end frames. In addition to the shape and location information of the object, its texture information in the end frames is used to predict the location and search space of it in the intermediate frames.

Recent research on image databases has been aimed at the development of content-based retrieval techniques for the management of visual information. Compared with such visual information as color, texture, and spatial constraints, shape is so important a feature associated with those image objects of interest that shape alone may be sufficient to identify and classify an object completely and accurately. this paper presents a novel method based on feature point histogram indexing for object shape representation in image databases. In this scheme, the feature point histogram is obtained by discretizing the angles produced by the Delaunay triangulation of a set of unique feature points which characterize object shape in the context, and then counting the number of times each discrete angle occurs in the resulted triangulation. the proposed shape representation technique is translation, scale, and rotation independent. Our various experiments concluded that the Euclidean distance performs very well as the similarity measure function in combination with the feature point histogram computed by counting the two largest angles of each individual Delaunay triangle. through the further experiment, we also found evidence that an image object representation using a feature point histogram provides an effective cue for image object discrimination.
