image search has been actively studied in recent years. On the other hands, image browsing has received little attention. image browsing refers to the process of presenting some forms of overview or summary of the image relationships, thus facilitating a user to navigate across the data set and find images of interests. In this paper, we present a new data structure built on the multi-linearization of image attributes for efficient organization of the data set and fast visual browsing of the images. We describe new techniques for multi-linearization based on multiple space-filling curves and hierarchical clustering techniques. In addition to providing fast navigation, our proposed data structure allows computationally efficient insertion and deletion of images from the data set. We then present a novel image navigator and browser built on dual-linearization data structure and intuitive presentation of image relevance and relationships, demonstrate the image navigation process, and report results on 1000 and 22,000 image databases. We also discuss how our data structure can be extended to support fast image search.

In this paper, we propose a new image feature extraction method for MPEG compressed video. To minimize the MPEG decoding process, we use only DC values for Y, Cr, and Cb components for each macroblock. then, we can obtain a feature vector using the decoded DC values of Y, Cr, and Cb components for all macroblocks in an I frame. the feature vector consists of histograms for various colors, luminance, and edge types. In obtaining histograms for colors and luminance features, we consider the ratio of contributing pure colors and luminance to the chroma DC values for each macroblock. then, we update all contributing colors and/or luminance histograms accordingly. Otherwise, if the macro block is classified as an edge block, then we update the corresponding edge type histogram. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed feature extraction method, we apply it to a scene change detection problem.

It has been argued that future image coding techniques should allow for "midstream access", i.e. allow image query, retrieval, and modification to proceed on the compressed representation [18]. In a recent work [1], we introduced the colour visual pattern image coding (CVPIC) technique for colour image compression. An image is divided into blocks and each block coded focally by mapping it to one of a predefined, universal set of visually significant image patterns consisting of representations for both edge and uniform (smooth) regions. the pattern and colour information is then stored, following a colour quantisation algorithm and an entropy encoding stage. Compression ratios between 40:1 and 60:1 were achieved whilst maintaining high image quality on a variety of natural colour images. It was also shown that CVPIC could achieve comparable performance to state-of-the-art techniques such as JPEG. In CVPIC, the colour distribution information forms part of the compressed data, and hence enables direct and fast implementation of content (colour) based image retrieval in the compressed domain. Also because the edge patterns are coded separately, information about the shapes of the objects and structure orientations within an image can be easily deduced from the compressed data of CVPIC. In this paper, we shall show that CVPIC is an image coding technique that meets the "4(th) criterion" [18], i.e. the compressed representations of CVPIC can be directly used for content based indexing and retrieval. A method for effectively matching the compressed features of CVPIC is described and experimental results demonstrating the effectiveness of this method in retrieving colour images in the compressed domain of CVPIC are presented.

Emerging applications of mobile data management, such as content-based image retrieval in ad hoc networks, require the awareness of content distribution to enact and optimize the communication and search tasks. Caching is a widely used approach in mobile environments to improve system performance and keep track of replications. Within the scope of mobile and ubiquitous computing infrastructure, traditional caching techniques are not effective for large-size data such as images due to the limitations of bandwidth, storage, and power. the functionality of caching techniques relies on exact match, making them unsuitable for imprecise and similarity-based queries. In addition, the description of cached contents is defined based on the query context instead of data content, which fails to exploit the semantic locality of cached data and makes the traditional caching techniques inefficient in utilizing cache storage. In this paper, we present a semantic-aware caching scheme (SAIC) for image databases in ad hoc networks. the proposed scheme is designed based on several novel ideas: 1) multi-level partitioning of semantic space, 2) constraint-based representation of image semantics, 3) non-flooding query resolution, and 4) adaptive cache consistency maintenance. Our combination of theoretical analysis and simulation show the efficiency of the proposed scheme, and evaluate its performance in comparison against two ad hoc caching schemes as advanced in the literature. © 2006 IEEE.

With recent advances in computer vision, image processing and analysis, a retrieval process based on visual content has became a key component in achieving high efficiency image query for large multimedia databases. In this paper, we propose and develop a novel indexing mechanism built on the top of a Xindice database targeted at supporting quick access to image/video data along with strong retrieval functionalities for those high-dimensional metadata. the proposed database applies a native XML database as a backbone, uses hybrid-tree as its database structure, and performs threshold Algorithm (TA) to conduct similarity search based on a random combination of image features. the database also sketches an index scheme in building a mapping between temporal and spatial domains so as to support both temporal and spatial queries at a higher speed search over the traditional pure temporal or spatial based indexing methods. the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed database system can conduct a more efficiently search activities supporting queries that involve composite features with arbitrary Boolean combinations and can outperform a traditional database employing a linear scanning search scheme.

this paper addresses the need for a semantic video-object approach for efficient storage and manipulation of video data to respond to the needs of several classes of potential applications when efficient management and deductions over voluminous data are involved. We present the VIGILANT model for content and event-based retrieval of video images and clips using automatic annotation and indexing of contents and events representing the extracted features and recognised objects in the images captured by a video camera in a car park environment. the underlying video-object model combines Object-Oriented modelling (OO) techniques and Description Logics (DLs) Knowledge representation. the OO technique models the static aspects of video clips and instances and their indexes will be stored in an Object-Oriented Database. the DLs model will extend the OO model to cater for the inherent dynamic content descriptions of the video, as events tend to spread over a sequence of frames.

this paper presents a simple and effective pre-processing method developed for the segmentation of MPEG compressed video sequences. the proposed method for scene-cut detection only involves computing the number of bits spent for each frame (encoding cost data), thus avoiding decoding the bitstream. the information is separated into I-, P-, B-frames, thus forming 3 vectors which are independently processed by a new peak detection algorithm based on overcomplete filter banks and on joint thresholding using a confidence number. Each processed vector yields a set of candidate frame numbers, i.e. 'hints' of positions where scene-cuts may have occurred. the 'hints' for all frame types are recombined into one frame sequence and clustered into scene cuts. the algorithm was not designed to distintuish among types of cuts but rather to indicate its position and duration. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is effective in detecting abrupt scene changes as well as gradual transitions. For precision demanding applications, the algorithm can be used with a low confidence factor just to select the frames that are worth being investigated by a more complex algorithm. the algorithm is not particularly tailored to MPEG and can be applied to most video compression techniques.

the explosive growth of images and videos on the World Wide Web (WWW) is making the Web into a huge resource of visual information. Among various types of multimedia information, still images or dynamic images (video clips) in compressed format are the most widely accepted on the WWW. therefore, it becomes an essential issue to achieve the maximum efficiency in transmitting and decoding those compressed images on the Internet. Progressive coding provides a mode that allows a coarse version of an image being transmitted at a lower bit rate and then gradually refined by subsequent transmissions. Compared with conventional coding, it is more suitable for interactive applications such as those involving JPEG images on the Internet. In this paper, we first give an approximation of cosine function used in IDCT for the various orders. Based on the approximation and a series analysis, we then develop a progressive decoding scheme which comprehends the successive approximation and the spectral selection. the analysis and experiments establish the fact that our proposed method saves computational cost significantly in comparison with the existing spectral selection based progressive decoding proposed by JPEG. Extensive experiments are carried out to evaluate the proposed algorithm, which reveals that, the reconstructed images, even at the lowest bit rate and with lower order approximation, can still achieve encouraging PSNR values.
