Besides traditional applications (e.g. CAD/CAM and trademark registry), new multimedia applications, such as structured video, animation and the MPEG-7 standard, require the storage and management of well-defined objects. We focus on shape-based object retrieval and conduct a comparison study on four such techniques: Fourier descriptors (FD), the grid-based (GB) method, Delaunay triangulation (DT) and MBC-TPVAS (minimum bounding circles/touch-point vertex-angle sequence). Our results show that the similarity retrieval accuracy of our method (TVPAS) is as good as the other methods, while it has the lowest computational cost for generating the shape signatures of the objects. Moreover, it has low storage requirements and a comparable computation cost to compute the similarity between two shape signatures. In addition, TPVAS requires no normalization of the objects and is the only method that has direct support for RST (rotation/scaling/translation) query types. In this paper, we also introduce a new shape description taxonomy.

A novel algorithm for very high compression of grayscale images presenting features that lead to power efficient implementations is proposed. A simple methodology based on a hierarchical three stage exploration of the algorithmic design space has been adopted for the conception of the algorithm. the proposed algorithm is based on an integer wavelet transform, which is much more efficient in terms of data storage and transfer compared to the widely used real wavelet transforms. For the coding of the coefficients of the wavelet transform fractal techniques using small size computationally generated codebooks are applied. the performance of the proposed algorithm is comparable to or better than that of existing standard algorithms. It is estimated using state-of-the-art high-level power estimation techniques that the proposed algorithm achieves lower power consumption by several times compared to existing standard algorithms.

A rotation, translation, and scaling (RTS) invariant color image indexing technique for imaging database systems is described. To demonstrate the RTS property of the imageretrieval, four databases are experimented in the computer simulation of the algorithm. the proposed technique is found to be unaffected by substantial changes in the database images due to rotation, translation, and scaling. this makes the technique very robust and attractive for a number of applications of the imagestorage and retrieval systems.

A novel similarity measure based on the Choquet integral was introduced for retrieving images from a image database that 'mostly' fit the query image. We showed that in certain conditions the measure is a norm, a fact that can be used to reduce the searching time using the triangle inequality. To test the new measure, a content based imageretrieval system was build. the system was benchmarked against the visual retrieval cartridge, Virage, built into Oracle 8 database system. the results suggested that the new measure is useful for imageretrieval.

In this paper, we present topics related to tracking of video objects in compressed videodatabases in the context of videoretrieval applications. We developed a videoretrieval and tracking system (VORTEX) to enable operation directly on compressed video data. the structure of the video compression standards is exploited in order to avoid the costly decompression operation. this is achieved by utilizing motion compensation-a critical prediction filter embedded in video compression standards-to estimate and interpolate the desired method for template matching. Occlusion analysis, filtering and motion analysis are used to implement fast tracking of objects of interest on the compressed video data. Being presented with a query in the form of template images of objects, the system operates on the compressed video in order to find the images or video sequences where those objects are present and their positions in the image. this enables the retrieval and display of the query-relevant sequences.

Enabling the efficient storage, access and retrieval of large volumes of multi-dimensional data is one of the important emerging problems in databases. We present a framework for adaptively storing, accessing, and retrieving large images. the framework uses a space and frequency graph to generate and select image view elements for storing in the database. By adapting to user access patterns, the system selects and stores those view elements that yield the lowest average cost for accessing the multi-resolution sub-region image views. the system uses a second adaptation strategy to divide computation between server and client in progressive retrieval of image views using view elements. We show that the system speeds-up retrieval for access and retrieval modes such as drill-down browsing and remote zooming and panning and minimizes the amount of data transfer over the network.

the detection of shot boundaries in video sequences is an important task for generating indexed videodatabases. this paper provides a comprehensive quantitative comparison of the metrics that have been applied to shot boundary detection. In addition, several standardized statistical tests that have not been applied to this problem, and three new metrics, are considered. A mathematical framework for quantitatively comparing metrics is supplied. Experimental results based on a video database containing 39,000 frames are included.
