Electronic systems are becoming the predominant method for flight critical systems and have substituted their pneumatic or hydraulic counterparts, increasing the need for constant and uninterrupted supply of power. One of the main limitations is overheating in generators due to an increased demand of current. Overheat in the generator windings can lead to insulation degradation and hence to catastrophic failure. therefore, understanding and monitoring heat flow through the generator is of utmost importance. Previous studies have viewed the electrical and thermal circuits as separate arrangements with little interaction between the two. this paper attempts to provide a systemic thermo-electric view of the generator and offer a method for interfacing the thermal and electrical circuits by the use of loss calculation. the long term goal of this project is to provide a means for model based health assessment and intelligent power management for on-board aircraft generator systems, while having limited information on the system itself. A new, dynamical approach for increasing the effectiveness of the pavement milling process is shown in this paper. the technology is derived from a dynamical model of a two-mass oscillator and a simple model of the pavement material. Both models are combined to simulate the milling operation. Different excitation methods are used and combined to find the optimal operation point of the model by taking the effectiveness into account. the simulation results are validated on a test stand with suitable proximity settings. With the model being validated, it can be scaled to a more complex model that also takes the geometry into account. the benefit of a more effective milling process results for example in a reduction of the machine size with maintaining the same work output or in less fuel consumption of existing machines. this paper advances a system-simulation based universal modelling approach for NVH-simulation of electric drives. the main idea is to use commercial FE-tools for model parametrisation and implement generic reduced electrodynamic and acoustic models in a system-simulation environment. the NVH-calculation itself is done in a system-simulation framework, which can be easily coupled with control and machine models for electric drives. the proposed approach is worked out in detail. As a first example, the simulation procedure is performed for an outrunner traction drive of electrified foldable scooters. this paper introduces the Active control of Trolleybus Current Collection systems (ACTCCS) research project and a number of early key finding. the goals of this project are to address key operational issues of a trolleybuses catenary-pantograph system in terms of the loss of contact force that causes electrical arcing, power reduction and de-wirement. the causes of this loss of contact force and the proposed solution of an actively controlled pantograph are presented in this paper through dynamic modelling and simulation of trolleybuses catenary-pantograph interaction and the application of an LQI controller. the results show that loss of contact can be eliminated with a small actuation force and this can be traded off against catenary wire displacement. Hypertension always happens with cardio-cerebral vascular diseases and kidney diseases. Exploring risk factors of the hypertension and its related complications can provide the basis for prevention and control of them. By using Cox single variable regression and multivariate regression on the samples with a period of three years, 1869 cases of hypertension patients recorded in medical treatment information system in Shenzhen, results show that the major risk factors of the complications of hypertension are age, symptoms, psychological adjustment level, which are statistically significant(p © 2016, Fuji Technology Press. the high-redundancy actuator concept that is inspired by biomimetic is an approach to fault tolerant actuator that aims to provide fault tolerance using relatively large numbers of small actuation elements. the actuation elements are assembled in parallel and series configurations to form a single actuator that has intrinsic fault tolerance. During normal operations, it is possible that some of these elements are operational and some are faulty. In this situation, the high-redundancy actuator will still work, but with graceful degradation. this paper discusses the modelling aspect of the high-redundancy actuator that consists of 12 actuation elements based on linear electromechanical actuation technology. Simulation results are validated with real-time experimental results using both a single actuator and the full high-redundancy actuator in open-loop and closed-loop. In Drosophila brain, gamma neurons in the mushroom body are involved in higher functions such as olfactory learning and memory. During metamorphosis, they undergo remodelling after which they adopt their adult shape. Some mutations alter remodelling and therefore neuronal final morphology, causing behavioural dysfunctions. the RNA binding protein Imp, for example, was shown to control this remodelling process at least partly by regulating profilin expression. this work aims at precisely characterizing the morphological changes observed upon imp knockdown in order to further understand the role of this protein. We develop a methodological framework that consists in the selection of relevant morphological features, their modelling and parameter estimation. We thus perform a statistical comparison and a likelihood analysis to quantify similarities and differences between wild type and mutated neurons. We show that imp mutant neurons can be classified into two phenotypic groups (called Imp L and Imp Sh) that differ in several morphological aspects. We also demonstrate that, although Imp L and wild-type neurons show similarities, branch length distribution is discriminant between these populations. Finally, we study biological samples in which Profilin was reintroduced in imp mutant neurons, and show that defects in main axon and branch lengths are partially suppressed. Cells are complex living organisms often described as the building blocks of life. the mechanical properties of such cells have been shown to be effective for medical diagnosis. Previous research in this area focus primarily on static methods by identifying local variations in cell elasticity. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has shown to be effective for such measurements. In this paper we extend on this methodology by developing a dynamic viscoelastic model of the cell, constructed to be well suited for parameter identification. A parameter estimator is then designed for identifying the spatially resolved mechanical properties of the cell. the parameter estimates are shown to converge exponentially fast to the real parameters by employing the provided control input. A key property of this online estimation scheme is allowing for mechanical changes in the cell to be detected over time. Furthermore, the approach can be applied to the problem of identifying the mechanical properties of any elastic material that can be scanned in AFM. this paper presents a development of a semi-active prosthetic knee, which can work in both active and passive modes based on the energy required during the gait cycle of various activities of daily livings (ADLs). the prosthetic limb is equipped with various sensors to measure the kinematic and kinetic parameters of both prosthetic limbs. this prosthetic knee is designed to be back-drivable in passive mode to provide a potential use in energy regeneration when there negative energy across the knee joint. Preliminary test has been performed on transfemoral amputee in passive mode to provide some insight to the amputee/prosthesis interaction and performance with the designed prosthetic knee.
