this paper presents the development of a soft robot for finger rehabilitation driven by a dielectric elastomer (DE) air pump. the focus is on patients with stroke-induced loss of hand movement function, who require specific rehabilitation training. the working mechanism of the DE air pump is thoroughly explained. A FE simulation of DE film under prestretching using ABAQUS is conducted, and the mechanical behavior of DE under biaxial and equiaxial stretching is obtained. the study also includes transient dynamic analyses of the DE film, including modal analysis and harmonic response analysis, which demonstrate favorable mechanical properties at the simulation level. Performance experiments of the end effector validate that the developed soft robot effectively meets the performance requirements for finger rehabilitation. the findings from these investigations hold significant implications for the development and optimization of soft robotic systems in the context of medical rehabilitation applications. © 2023 IEEE.

this paper presents a parametric study of beams resting on elastic foundations having nonlinear cubic stiffness properties. An analytical study is conducted using the expansion method and a numerical study using Finite Element analysis (FEA) in Abaqus to achieve the work. Both free and forced beam vibration responses are investigated. the objective of the study is to understand better how the frequencies of the beam are influenced by (i) cubic-nonlinearity of the stiffness of the foundation (compared with the response of the beam on a linear-elastic foundation) and (ii) external excitation amplitude. Furthermore, the effects of these parameters on the amplitude of vibration of the beam are explored. As expected, the natural frequencies of the beam increase as the stiffness parameter increases. then, the extent to which the nonlinear foundation modifies the beam’s vibration characteristics is also revealed. Finally, numerical results are compared to analytical results for validation, and conclusions are drawn related to engineering practice. this work was supported by the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Fellowships, the Swedish International Development Corporation Agency (SIDA), and the International Students’ Scholarship from the University of Cape Town. the authors would like to acknowledge all these sources of financial support and express their sincere gratitude. © 2022 the Author(s).

the 3D digital design and the delivery of 3D digital models for substations have been widely carried out around the world. However, the current 3D display systems cannot reflect the the real-time operating data and status of the equipment. In this paper, a 3D real-time monitoring and display system for substations is proposed, which can dynamically monitor the operating data and status of equipment in a 3D visualization environment. © 2023 SPIE.

Gas Turbine is a mechanical system which is used for power generation since decades. Its components are highly stressed and exposed to very high temperature. It operates on various environmental condition which experience numerous loading patterns. In all these operating conditions, Gas turbines must operate with higher efficiency to meet changing power requirements. Each component must be assessed for different mechanical failures and predict life during design and development. Gas Turbine Rotors which comprise of several discs are one of the most critical components in gas turbine. GT rotor is subjected to high temperature and centrifugal load during their operations. In such conditions, predicting the failures becomes utmost priority. this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Machine Learning (ML) techniques to predict the failure in a gas turbine Rotor Disc. For this study, a simplified geometrical 3D model of Turbine Disc was used along with Cooling holes, Hub geometry with Sealing arm and lifting features. Four input variables i.e., cooling hole mass flow, temperature of cooling air, purge hole mass flow and temperatures of purge air were used as input feature to the machine learning model. Steady-state thermo-mechanical analysis were performed to evaluate the metal temperature and subsequently the stress and life of the component under various load cases. A machine learning based surrogate model was developed based on the data extracted from 3D thermo-mechanical FEA assessment. the generated dataset was randomly divided into 75:25 ratio for training and testing of ML models respectively. Multiple models based on different algorithms were created for predicting disc LCF life. then, these were evaluated with test set to select the model using various Evaluation Metric. Machine Learning techniques such as Logistic Regression, Random Forest and Support Vector Machine algorithms were compared using Precision, Recall and F1 Score. the results were validated

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) denotes a stage of cognitive decline that could indicate an increased vulnerability to developing Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Timely identification of MCI is crucial for intervention and monitoring, potentially delaying or preventing further cognitive decline. this study aims to devise a method for early MCI detection using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. the EEGNet model, a specialized neural network architecture tailored for EEG data analysis, is employed. the EEG data undergoes preprocessing, involving the application of a bandpass filter to isolate relevant frequency components, and segmentation into shorter epochs. these epochs are subsequently classified as either HC or MCI using the EEGNet model. the model achieved a remarkable accuracy rate of 99%, underscoring the potential of leveraging EEG data to enhance diagnostic capabilities and enable early interventions for individuals at risk of cognitive decline. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Adders play a central role in arithmetic computations as well as digital signal processing. Besides addition, adders are used in multiple operations in processors. Based on our requirements upon variegated parameters our choice on adders can also be changed. Most digital systems, such as processors or computers, have 32-bit architecture, which includes 32-bit integers, registers, and memory locations, among other things. As a result, optimising 32-bit adders minimises total latency and thus enhances speed. In this work, performance analysis of 32-bit adders is compared by the Verilog programming language. 32-bit adder design is highly crucial as its architecture is widespread and used widely, and it is so hard to design. designing several adders of 32 bit such as carry save adder (CSA), carry look ahead adder (CLA), ripple carry adder (RCA), modified carry select adder (MCSA), carry skip adder (CSKA), kogge stone adder (KSA) and carry select adder (CSLA), are explained in this work based on memory usage and delay. Discussions on adder types are made that aids in reducing the time usage on tedious tasks. CLA and CSKA were compared. Synthesis and simulation are done using Xilinx ISE tool. the simulation results help in the determination of the attributes that were assorted. © 2022 IEEE.

the skill of identifying and understanding the sentiments, feelings, and views contained within textual material, whether it be a single sentence or a lengthy document, is known as sentiment analysis. Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and others generate vast and diverse data in the digital age. these data streams provide insightful information about the audience's perceptions and reactions to a variety of occasions, products, or topics, covering the positive and negative ends of the spectrum. this study uses a supervised machine learning framework to examine 5,877 tweets on IPL 2023, a prominent sporting event. the main goal is to identify the predominant sentiment polarity in these Twitter postings. the authors use supervised machine learning to categorize tweets as positive, negative, or neutral regarding a significant sports event, unveiling nuanced user sentiments. they then conduct a comprehensive performance assessment, comparing various classifiers based on crucial metrics like accuracy, sensitivity, and precision to determine the most reliable sentiment analysis model. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

In optical communication system, dispersion compensation techniques are used to lessen the effects of chromatic dispersion, that degrade the quality and performance of transmitted signals. Dispersion compensation techniques play a crucial role in maintaining signal quality, extending transmission distances, enhancing system performance, and providing flexibility in network design in optical communication systems. these techniques aim to minimize or eliminate the distortion caused by dispersion, allowing for longer distance transmission and better signal quality. this paper presents an analysis of the role of the dispersion compensating fiber in an optical fiber communication link. the existence of dispersion is detrimental to the whole system performance. the use of compensation schemes can help to reduce dispersion effects that can induce crosstalk and hamper the system performance. the length of the dispersion compensation fiber is varied from 10 to 30 km to study its effect on the system performance in provisions of the Q-value, eye height and the BER. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Intrusion Detection systems (IDS) play a crucial role in a comprehensive security framework for an organization by detection and response to security incidents, encompassing both network-based and host-based threats. the selection of IDS components and its configuration depends upon the security requirements of the company and the prevailing threat landscape they encounter. the conventional Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) IDS share the common objective of identifying and mitigating network security breaches. However, they diverge notably in terms of their architectural design and operational methodology. this paper presents a comparative analysis between a traditional Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) based IDS. the need for sustainable buildings has gained traction as a result of escalating negative environmental impacts of the conventional building type. A plethora of different green building rating systems and assessment tools have been developed and implemented around the globe to gage the performance of buildings in meeting sustainability goals. However, it is not clear the most common and widely adopted green building rating tools (GBRTs). this study identifies the most widely adopted GBRTs and their features through a systematic review of literature. A total of 52 articles published between 1997 and 2021 drawn from the World Green Building Council database and Google Scholar were included in this review. the data were analyzed using thematic content analysis. the results reviewed that there are ten most widely adopted GBRTs across the world with the LEED, BREEAM, and Passivhaus being the top three. It was also observed that even though each of the ten identified GBRTs has its focus on one or more elements of green building design, there exists a marked variation in the level of emphasis on the different green building elements due to different regional considerations. the study concludes that adequate knowledge of the most widely used GBRTs and their key features is a prerequisite for their adoption by industry stakeholders for the attainment of sustainability goals. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
