More demanding performance criteria and design specifications for many types of machines and structures have led to the use of active control technology in vibration design. the papers of the conference are of a general nature pertaining to generic vibration problems as well as papers discussing specific devices and structures. Active damping of a Bernoulli-Euler Beam via End Point Impedance Control using Distributed Parameter techniques is presented. A modal approach to the control of distributed parameter systems is also included.

this proceedings which contains a collection of papers from the modal analysis sessions of the 1987 asme Vibrations conference includes 18 papers dealing with experimental aspects, computational issues, and applications. A number of the application papers have, as their objective, the modal analysis of a particular structure, while others use the modal description of the structure as a tool to examine other aspects of the structure. these papers have been divided into five sessions. the first session includes four papers which describe some recent developments in modal testing;while the second session deals with applications of modal analysis to other problems in structural dynamics. the third session deals withthe application of modal testing and analysis to rotor dynamic systems, and the fourth session looks into a number of computational issues in modal analysis including component mode synthesis. the final session in this volume examines three specific subjects: estimating frequency response functions, active damping, and laminated plates.

the authors report on experiments with Prolog design descriptions and tools in CAEDE (Carleton Embedded System design Environment), an experimental, iconic design environment for multitasking, embedded systems. the philosophy of CAEDE is to enter structural and temporal design information iconically, via a graphics interface, to serve as the basis for designanalysis and skeleton code generation, and then to enter, under control of the iconic interface, program 'strips' to fill in the functional gaps in the skeleton code. the iconic information is converted automatically into a Prolog design database of facts and rules. CAEDE aims to support incremental design and to be incrementally extensible. In the current implementation of CAEDE, which runs on a SUN workstation supporting design for Ada, the iconic interface is limited to structural design. A description is given of the Prolog side of the research, covering the nature of the facts produced from the iconic input by the current implementation and their use by experimental Prolog tools for structural analysis, temporal analysis and Ada code generation. the aim is to show how Prolog is contributing to the framework of a powerful, extensible design environment.

Increasing attention is being paid to the vibrational and seismic problems of piping systems in nuclear power plants. In order to minimize the consequences of seismic and other dynamic loadings, the piping design decisively depends on the quality of available analytical procedures. this paper presents the concept of a new dynamic analysisthat produces more complete and integrated results. It is based on the transfer function mathematical procedure combined with mechanical impedance and control engineering techniques. the transfer function approach and application on a heat removal loop of a nuclear reactor are described. the main advantages foreseen are higher reliability and safety of the design, lower construction cost and better plant availability.

We investigated the relationship among workers' desires and design of production systems for designing production systems which harmonize workers' desires with company's need. About 1,500 workers in the Japanese representative manufacturing companies are asked some questions about desires or working life in their working place. Using their response data and analyzing these data by means of principal components and principal clusteres, workers are mostly classified into two groups in every workers' desire pattern. these two groups mutually have quite different and interresting characters from the viewpoint of workers' motivation. More detailed analysis on each group has been developed to abstract some key factors affecting the workers' motivation from various working environment.
