We review towards zero and zero carbon remote community energy systems using wind and solar electricity generation combined with battery and thermal energy storage systems. systems are modelled in the context of the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation Community located in the Nemiah Valley in British Columbia, Canada. the community has a population of 200 residents, most of whom are connected to the local microgrid. the goal of this research was to (1) investigate how low-cost thermal energy storage impacts the levelized cost of energy of these systems, and (2) assess the sensitivity of unmet energy capacity of the system at varying storage costs. Electrical and thermal load profiles for the community were developed and determined to average a combined annual load of 2 GWh with a peak of 900 kW. A model of the proposed system was built in HOMER Pro® and sensitivity analysis of PV, wind, and hybridized energy storage costs was conducted. Results indicate that as wind and PV costs are projected to decrease, minimizing the levelized cost of energy of the energy system is less dependent on thermal energy storage cost.; this correlation decreases as unmet capacity increases. Moreover, the analysis suggests that these systems yield greater than 70% curtailment of solar and wind energy, regardless of energy storage costs.

the current and continuously increasing demand for urban mobility implies introducing new sustainable and alternative systems to road transport. Where economic viability is established, metro lines are one of the most effective and least impactful solutions if the characteristics of the subsoil are appropriately considered and the construction phases are planned in such a way as to limit the induced ground deformations and not compromise the existing building stock. the excavation of tunnels in loose soils inevitably causes movements in the topsoil resulting in a combination of sagging and hogging, which in an urban environment must be controlled and minimized to avoid damage to the existing structures and infrastructure. through the back-analysis of the Budapest (Hungary) Metro Line4, in this work, we propose an innovative tool where the design process is based on a GIS-BIM interaction, and the executive phase takes advantage of artificial neural networks capable of adjusting the design choices to the monitoring evidence. the environmental and geotechnical aspects are managed through the GIS Platform;then, 3D subsoil and structural models are developed following the BIM approach. After, the artificial neural network’s architecture is first constructed via a trial-and-error process which leads to selecting the best combination of input variables that better correlate to the measured volume loss. then, real-time analysis is performed, and the transient effect is considered to simulate the excavation advance. the obtained results denote significant effectiveness in predicting the ground deformation and, thus, damage induced at the surface by mechanized excavation. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A new displacement-based approach is proposed herein to predict the behaviour of pretensioned cable nets subjected to vertical loads. the cables are contained in horizontal plane and have a single degree of freedom in each node, where loads are applied. the model is based on the equilibrium equations of an infinitesimal cable-element, which are solved by considering the catenary equation under the hypothesis of (a) zero bending stiffness, (b) linear elastic behaviour of materials, (c) small deformation, and (d) the existence of perfect hinges in each node. More precisely, a finite-difference numerical procedure is introduced in order to evaluate nodal displacements related to a set of applied vertical forces. the effectiveness of the proposed approach is then assessed by comparing the numerical results with those obtained by other models found in the current literature. Finally, the proposed approach is used to design new and more efficient insulating panels for the green house technology.

It has become a promising research topic that using the Artificial Society (AS) solves social governance problems such as emergency management, environmental protection, and urban planning. the unceasing evolution of the AS requires high demands for the accuracy of the basic models in AS. With the development of the IoT and data science, researchers can refine the models in AS by contrasting the big data harvested from real society. this paper aims to improve the accuracy of the population mobility model in AS based on the analysis of the real-world dataset about urban population mobility and the comparison between the real-world data and the data generated from AS. To this end, firstly, the datasets are processed and analyzed by Spark. To improve the efficiency in this phase, we design the RDD structure for population mobility data and propose a novel query method, named partition traversal method. then, the population mobility patterns are analyzed and compared, which are extracted from the datasets of real-world and AS, respectively. Based on the diversity between the two patterns, the optimization scheme of the population mobility model is finally proposed by adjusting the workplace selection. this study is an important reference for the modeling and optimization of population mobility in AS. © 2022 IEEE.

this paper presents a quad-plane tilt-rotor innovation, representing an advancement in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) design. the quad plane boasts improvements in crucial aspects, including motor placement, motor count, airfoil selection, vehicle typology, and wing and tail configurations. One of the standout features highlighted in our study is its ability to conduct mapping designed explicitly for detailed plant health analysis. What sets it apart is its take-off capability that eliminates the need for launch areas and provides unmatched flexibility during deployment. When operating in fixed-wing mode, the quad plane excels in surveillance missions by ensuring data recording is automatically stored on an SD Card to maintain data integrity from take-off to landing. We employ a PID control method further supported by an IMU sensor to ensure stability during flight control. Integrating a GPS guarantees accuracy by processing satellite-derived radio signals to determine latitude and longitude information. With a flight duration of 15 minutes and reliable control outcomes, the UAV is a game changer in aerial surveillance applications. the quad-plane tilt rotor is more than a technological achievement;it has the potential to completely transform agricultural methods in Indonesia, tackling the issues of diminishing yields and rice production. Our research indicates that this unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is on the verge of establishing benchmarks in monitoring and analysis. © 2023 IEEE.

High efficiency, high output waveform quality and low stress switching are among the principal requirements for the power converter design. this paper investigates the design and control of a 3-level Active Neutral Point Clamped (ANPC) grid-tied inverters to meet these requirements. A new PWM switching strategy is designed for power loss reduction in the control of ANPCs that use hybrid Si and WBG switching devices. the locations of switching devices made of different materials in the circuit are investigated, and the power losses and switching stresses under different PWM control strategies are compared. the power losses due to both conduction and switching for each switching device and the whole circuit are evaluated. Simulation results confirm that both the converter design and the PWM control strategy need to be optimized together for the best trade-off among different objectives, such as the power losses and the cost. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

this paper delves into a comprehensive analysis of fault-tolerant memory systems, focusing on recovery techniques modelled using Markov chains to address transient errors. the study revolves around the application of scrubbing methods in conjunction with Single Error Correction and Double Error Detection (SEC-DED) codes. It explores three primary models: 1) Exponentially distributed scrubbing, involving periodic checks of memory words within exponentially distributed time intervals; 2) Deterministic scrubbing, featuring regular, periodic word checks; and 3) Mixed scrubbing, which combines both probabilistic and deterministic scrubbing approaches. the research encompasses the estimation of reliability and Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) values for each model. Notably, the findings highlight the superior performance of mixed scrubbing over simpler scrubbing methods in terms of reliability and MTTF.

this paper deals with the seismic design of modular steel water storage tanks designed and manufactured with Zincalume (c) steel panels. the tanks have a novel design and do not have bottom plates. they are fitted with a synthetic liner, are stiffened with vertical wind girts and are anchored to a concrete ring beam at the bottom of each wind girt using holding down bolts. Due to the high radius to wall thickness ratio (R/tw) of these tanks, the structural performance, interaction with the stored fluid and the foundation soil under dynamic loads, have not been well understood. In the research reported, the effect of seismic loads on the global structural behaviour of these tanks such as base shear, overturning moment, circumferential stress as well as buckling behaviour of the thin metal panels is studied using both analytical and numerical Finite Element Method (FEM) analyses. Parametric studies using spring-mounted mass analogy techniques specified by the American Petroleum Institute code (API650) and the New Zealand Society for Earthquake engineering recommendation (NZSEE) are conducted for three tanks with different fluid height to tank radius ratios (Hw/R).

Continuously variable filter based on Fabry-Perot interference was studied in the paper. A thin film interference signal transmission model whose spectral characteristics are continuously variable with spatial direction was established. According to the design specifications of continuously variable thin film filter with wide band and high dispersion coefficient, and were selected as high and low refractive index materials respectively, the TFCalc thin film design software was used to optimize the design of narrowband filter film by the variable metric method, and the cascade mode of symmetric film stacks with different center wavelengths was used to design broadband cut-off film to broaden the cut-off band. the designed formula has a continuously varying film thickness distribution along the spatial direction of the substrate, so that the center wavelength of the bandpass filter at each position along the spatial direction of the filter is linearly distributed. the designed filter can obtain a spectral gradient of 650-1050nm within the effective working region of 12mm, and the linear dispersion coefficient is 33.33nm/mm. the single-piece integrated multi-channel filtering is realized, which fully meets the requirements of miniaturization, wide working band and high spectral efficiency.

the study explores Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) technologies designed for Internet of things (IoT) applications in Smart Cities. LPWANs offer broad communication coverage over several kilometers, prioritizing low data rates for extended device autonomy, often up to a decade. this paper analyzes various LPWAN attributes, such as operational frequency bands, bandwidth capabilities, physical layer specifications, data transmission rates, and coverage areas. the research specifically investigates ecosystems and provides a detailed comparison of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and channel capacity among three key LPWAN technologies: LoRa, Sigfox, and LTE-M. the study compares SINR distribution functions for LoRa, Sigfox, and LTE-M End Devices (EDs) with varying quantities. the results show that LTE-M maintains a constant SINR due to its dedicated frequency band, avoiding interference. Sigfox outperforms LoRa, showing a gap increase from 22 to 40 dB with 1100 and 3000 devices. LTE-M outperforms LoRa and Sigfox in channel capacity, accommodating twelve users simultaneously. LoRa maintains a moderate capacity due to its wider band and orthogonal spreading factors. LTE-M’s efficiency comes at a higher transmission power cost, exceeding LoRa and Sigfox by 6 dB. Additionally, LTE-M operates in licensed bands, using a modulation scheme supporting more bits/symbols, potentially enhancing its performance. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
