"Functionally graded materials" (FGMs) are becoming more popular owing to merits in their thermos-mechanical behaviour and performance. However, designing the systems made of FGM, considering the practical conditions such as thermal conditions, corrosive environments, manufacturing difficulties and manufacturing defects are still evolving. Present work is aimed at reviewing different design and modelling approaches suitable specifically to rotor systems made of "functionally graded" materials. though research is picking up in this area, limited studies have been reported on FG rotors. A step-by-step concise information has been provided on every aspect of FGM related to rotor systems, which includes brief history of FGM, literature review of fabrication methods, applications of FGM, material modelling due to gradation of materials over the cross section of rotor, temperature variant material properties because of temperature distribution, analytical and finite element methods available to analyse rotor systems subjected dynamic loads, modelling and analysis of defects such as effect of corrosion, porosity and cracks in dynamic behaviour of rotor systems. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

the paper analyzes the influence of static preloading of the reinforced concrete frame of a building on its relative robustness index under the scenario of a column removal. the study was based on quasi-static finite element analysis, taking into account physical and geometric nonlinearity. the constitutive diagrams of concrete took into account the rheological properties of the material in the static-dynamic loading regime. For this purpose, the integral module concept proposed by Bondarenko was adopted. Numerical modeling has shown that the values of fracture load and the relative robustness index decrease for model accounted for rheological properties of concrete compared to model that did not consider such properties. the revealed effect is caused by the growth of deformations in eccentrically compressed members as a result of creep and shrinkage. thus, the factor of long-term operation can have a negative impact on the robustness of reinforced concrete structures under accidental actions, such as a column removal scenario. this effect should be considered in the structural design of reinforced concrete building frames. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In recent years, Sweden has seen substantial changes to its building designs, especially regarding the envelope and ventilation systems, across both renovations and new constructions. Although enhancements like better insulation and new building materials have boosted energy efficiency, they have also led to moisture-related problems such as stains, mold, and decay. To address these issues, heat and moisture transfer simulations are used for damage assessments, relying on climate data and often utilizing a Moisture Reference Year (MRY). the creation of an MRY specifically for Sweden's buildings and climate is currently being explored. this work seeks to gather methods from different countries, conducting a thorough search in databases such as Scopus andWeb of Science to find the most suitable approach for Sweden. the goal is to adapt these international methodologies to meet the unique demands of Swedish buildings and climate. the outcomes will contribute to establishing a Moisture design Period (MDP) customized for Sweden, enhancing the durability and sustainability of its buildings.

Reconfigurable robots are at the forefront of robotics innovation due to their unmatched versatility and adaptability in addressing various tasks through collaborative operations. this paper explores the design and implementation of a novel pendulum-based magnetic coupling system within a reconfigurable disk robot. Diverging from traditional designs, this system emphasizes enhancing coupling strength while maintaining the compactness of the outer shell. We employ parametric optimization techniques, including magnetic array simulations, to improve coupling performance. Additionally, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the rolling robot’s motion to assess its operational effectiveness in the coupling mechanism. this examination reveals intriguing new motion patterns driven by frictional and sliding effects between the rolling disk modules and the ground. Furthermore, the new setup introduces a novel problem in the area of nonprehensile manipulation. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Canada has experienced a warming trend since the industrial revolution, surpassing the global average by a factor of two, with northern regions witnessing an even more pronounced threefold increase in temperature. this significant and consistent shift in the climate has led to extensive alterations in weather patterns across the country, intensifying the frequency, severity, and duration of climate-related natural disasters including extreme rainfall, which significantly affects the structural integrity and performance of roofs. In this paper, we will present the approach adopted by the National Research Council Canada to obtain the magnitudes and distributions of extreme design rainfall, which will be used to evaluate the performance of climate resilient roofs in Canada. the approach involves an analysis of one minute frequency rainfall data to derive the temporal distribution of extreme 5-min duration rainfall events historically observed around cities in Canada. the magnitudes of future projected rainfall are obtained by temperature-based scaling of historically observed extreme rainfall in accordance with the future projected changes in temperature forecasted for these cities by the Canadian Regional Climate Model - version 4 (CanRCM4). the future projected magnitudes of extreme rainfall are then distributed across the duration of the event making use of the rainfall distribution functions previously obtained for the cities. the process is implemented for three Canadian cities of Montreal, St. Johns, and Calgary and peak rainfall rates of 13.7 mm/min, 8 mm/min, and 4.1 mm/min respectively are obtained for the design of roof systems for their hydraulic capacity. the outcomes of this work will contribute to enhancing the resilience of these roof assemblies in Canada in the face of a changing climate.

the COVID-19 pandemic greatly affected individuals' travel behavior, particularly their mode preferences. Due to the risk of infection, people began avoiding public transport and shifted toward private transport. Existing studies primarily focused on accurately predicting individuals' mode choices during the pandemic. this study aims to identify the factors contributing to these choices. Ten different machine learning classification models were developed and evaluated, with Random Forest and Support Vector Machines marginally outperforming other classifiers. Explainable machine learning approaches, Gini importance and SHAP analysis, found income and education to be the most significant contributors to mode choices. Individuals with low income were more likely to choose shared transport over solo transport. Similarly, individuals with low education levels are more likely to opt for shared transport. Older individuals exhibited a positive association with shared transport mode choice, while younger individuals tended to prefer solo transport modes. Males were more likely to choose shared transport than females. these findings can assist urban and transport planners in efficiently planning and operating transport systems during pandemics. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.. this study attempted to identify the influence of the WEDM process variable on performance indicators such as material removal rate during the machining of Inconel X-750. the primary objective of this study is to examine the impact of process variables, understand their effect on material removal rate (MRR), and concurrently optimize MRR using the desirability function analysis (DFA) approach. the results of the experiment have led to the outcomes, as the regression model for MRR developed using RSM is statistically significant. Because of its modest p-value (on time while decreasing with increasing servo voltage and pulse-off time. It is observed that the estimated optimum value for MRR using the DFA technique is 4.0998 mm3/min with optimum parameters setting (i.e., Ton = 120 µs, Toff = 50 µs, Ip = 12A, and Sv = 40 V). © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Transit stations are critical points in public transportation systems that determine the capacity and user's satisfaction. Level of Service (LoS) is a key factor used to assess the efficacy of the system and the overall performance. the capacity, the level and the quality of service are mostly considered at the design stage, neglecting operational challenges or emergency circumstances. the ageing population phenomenon poses significant challenges due to inclined mobility due to slower walking speeds, and cognitive and physical limitations which lead to longer dwell and reaction times for elderly passengers (65+). this study develops a pedestrian simulation tool using JavaScript and *** to analyze the impact of age on the total travel times, delays and waiting times, and the Level of Service within a typical suburban railway station. the model consists of two agent classes with distinct attributes such as speed and dwell times, reflecting real-world behaviors. Six scenarios were simulated, each one constituted of a different proportion of elderly passengers. Simulation results reveal that increased proportions of elderly passengers lead to higher dwell times and longer ticketing queues and total travel times. Non-linear trends in platform waiting times and in ticketing queues were reported due to fewer passengers being serviced at the ticketing counters. this research highlights the importance of considering ageing populations in transit operations, offering insights for inclusive, efficient, and safe station planning. the simulation tool can provide valuable insights for different scenarios at the operational level and help in the optimization of the overall performance. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.. this paper conducts an analysis and investigation of outage performances and ergodic sum capacity for different users within each cluster in downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. Analytical expressions for outage performance and ergodic sum capacity are derived and analyzed. the analysis and simulation demonstrate that NOMA systems with more users in one cluster exhibit higher performance with lower average channel gains, while NOMA systems with fewer users in one cluster exhibit higher performance with higher average channel gains. this suggests the need for different user grouping strategies under varying signal-to-noise ratio conditions, and the fixed user grouping schemes for NOMA systems are inadequate to adapt to complex environments and diverse services. Consequently, this paper brings in the mixed user grouping NOMA systems, which offers greater advantages comparing to orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and conventional NOMA. Finally, this study provides pathways for further research on mixed user grouping in downlink NOMA systems. © ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2025.
