this work proposes the design optimization of three permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) with external rotors and different slot-pole ratios through particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. After optimization, the three machines are compared with the goal of selecting the one that best suits a specified application: a cooling system applied to the propulsion system of an electric vehicle. In all cases, the energy efficiency of the machine is set as the sole optimization objective, while performance and design constraints are incorporated into the algorithm's cost function to bring the initial design to a truly optimized condition. the equations used for the machine design are presented, as well as the methodology followed for the calculation of losses and estimation of back electromotive force. A sensitivity analysis of the optimization objective concerning the optimization variables is conducted. In the end, the results are discussed, and the machine with 12 slots and 14 poles is selected as the most suitable for the final application. It achieved an efficiency increase of nearly 4% compared to the initial design through optimization and demonstrated the highest values of efficiency and average torque among the analyzed machines. © 2023 IEEE.

In this work, a user-friendly electromagnetic tool for analysis and synthesis of a novel class of 3-D dielectric lens antennas is presented. the lens antenna shape is modeled using a generalized superformula allowing additional degree of freedom. thanks to the free parameters characterizing this formula, the lens geometry can be adjusted in a simple and analytical way. the electromagnetic tool is based on the geometrical optics and tube tracing approximations as well as the physical optic approach. In this way, the multiple wave reflections within the lens region as well as the far field outside the lens can be calculated. Moreover, an efficient synthesis procedure based on swarm intelligence has been developed and integrated in the numerical code. thanks to this design tool it is possible to identify the lens parameters yielding the optimal antenna characteristic and a desired radiation patterns with low computational burden. © 2023 University of Split, FESB.

the traffic flow and traffic flow at suburban intersections are complex and difficult to control. Effective analysis of traffic at intersections and continuous optimization of signal timing are important means to ensure orderly traffic at suburban intersections. Taking the typical Zijin intersection at the south end of Hefei as an example, the video monitoring system at the intersection carries out traffic survey and data analysis on vehicle speed, vehicle density, delay, etc., and designs a more reasonable signal timing scheme for the suburban intersection, which can effectively improve the traffic efficiency at the peak hours of the intersection. the research method and design scheme can promote the traffic research of similar suburban intersections, and have certain reference significance for alleviating traffic congestion on suburban roads. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

this paper studies a multi-modal robotic system referred to as a flying+sailing drone with the consideration of six degrees of freedom (6-DoF) for flying and 5-DoF for sailing, i.e., a twelve-dimensional state space for flying and a ten-dimensional state space for sailing. Key characteristics of hybrid systems emerging in tasks involving both flying and sailing are (i) changes in the dimension of the state space as the system switches from flying to sailing and vice versa, (ii) the presence of autonomous switchings triggered upon the landing of the drone on the water surface, and (iii) non-identity jumps in the state upon switching. For the scenario in which the drone's initial state is in the flying mode and a fixed terminal state is specified in the sailing mode, the associated optimal control problems are studied for the minimization of time and the minimization of the control effort. the necessary optimality conditions are obtained from the Hybrid Minimum Principle (HMP), and the associated numerical simulations are presented. © 2024 the Authors. this is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license.

three Gorges ship lift has been put into trial navigation since September 18,2016, and coordinated operation with the three Gorges ship lock. the annual throughput of Project has continued to grow steadily, and the throughput has record high consecutively for many years. this paper analyzes the cooperative operation characteristics of the three Gorges ship lift and the three Gorges ship lock through data statistical analysis method, and demonstrates the role of fast channel and diversion ship of three Gorges ship lift. the results showed, three Gorges ship lift effectively play the role of fast channel, and play the role of diversion passenger ships, public service ships, small ships, empty ships, which improve loading rate of ships passing through the three Gorges ship lock, and the Single operation throughput promotion of the three Gorges ship lock. It plays an important role in improving the overall passing ability of the three Gorges project. © 2024 SPIE.

the adoption of variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems in commercial and residential buildings is on the rise due to their flexibility and efficiency. Accurate prediction of cooling loads requires a comprehensive understanding of building design and operational parameters, which are subject to various uncertainties that must be considered for reliable results. Conventional practice involves oversized heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to minimize performance uncertainties. However, this approach leads to increased capital and operating expenses, inefficient space utilization, and excessive greenhouse gas emissions. this study presents a framework for assessing the impact of operational and design uncertainties on key performance indicators in Kuwaiti residential buildings with VRF systems, including annual cooling load, total energy consumption, HVAC electricity usage per conditioned floor area, VRF system cost, and the cooling electricity consumption to total energy consumption ratio (R). Additionally, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based model has been developed to predict output parameters for residential buildings. thirteen uncertainty parameters, encompassing building characteristics, occupants, building energy systems, VRF variables, and lighting conditions, were evaluated in the study. the sensitivity analysis of the input uncertainty parameters on the output variables was conducted using various statistical methods. Results from the sensitivity analysis indicate that the cooling set-point has the most significant impact on the energy consumption of residential buildings among the variables examined. © 2023 ASHRAE.

As an important basis for the management of equipment and data assets of smart hydropower plants, the operation statistical analysis service provides a data basis for the management and analysis of the overall operation of various equipment and power plants. In this paper, the functions and business requirements of the service were analyzed, and the overall design of the system architecture and the design and software development of databases, configuration programs, statistical analysis, background data processing, etc., were carried out. With the service, the processing and calculation functions of multi-source service measurement point data were realized, which provided data support for a variety of display forms of human-computer interaction interface. © 2023 SPIE.

the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) field is rapidly growing and offers a wide range of uses in different domains, such as healthcare and daily life. this paper discusses the development of a wheelchair operated by BCI using Motor Imagery (MI) mental commands for turning left and right and blinking for stopping and starting. the Emotiv Insight is used to collect raw electroencephalography (EEG) data, while a Linear Discriminant analysis (LDA) algorithm is used to classify the mental commands. OpenViBE software is employed to process and classify brain signals. the system is evaluated on 5 subjects in real-time, and 3 experiments are conducted to test starting, stopping, and turning. the results showed that the subjects can command the wheelchair operated by BCI with a high degree of nrecision. © 2023 IEEE.

this paper presents a wearable potassium sensors based on a flexible electromagnetic filter. the filter design includes four supershaped double split ring resonators optimized for operating at 3.5 GHz. the RT/duroid®6202 dielectric substrates was selected for its flexibility and durability against wear and abrasion. the resonators were embedded to reduce their footprint and increase sensitivity, especially near the operating frequency. A parametric analysis was conducted to identify the optimal shape and geometrical parameters for the resonators improving sensing capabilities. the sensor performance was investigated under normal and critical conditions achieved through a shaped profile. © 2023 University of Split, FESB.

Dynamic thermal Rating (DTR) can effectively increase the overhead line ampacity by accurately evaluate the temperature and wind speed surrounding it. this is critical especially when more and more renewable sources are connected to the power network, and the new power flow distribution imposed significant pressure to the existing electricity network. this article focuses on the method of computing the fluid flow speed surrounding overhead line (OHL) conductors. Turbulent flow is taken into consideration by three-dimensional finite element analysis for the first time. the results are summarized and it is proved that the model with consideration of turbulent flow gives better estimation of the wind speed distribution therefore thermal dissipation. It is concluded that this detailed modeling can help to improve the accuracy of DTR determination for OHL conductors. © 2024 SPIE.
