Negligence/overview of assessment in geotechnical parameters leads to cost, schedule, and time overruns of a project. Improper geotechnical investigation leads to cost, schedule, and time overruns of transportation infrastructure projects. the primary purpose of the present study is to assess the causes of construction delays, cost overruns accompanied with geotechnical reasons for highway projects. In addition to that, the study also emphasizes on geotechnical-related problems in highway projects and their preventive measures. the primary data was collected by means of organized questionnaires which were distributed to the different experts, consultants, and professionals. the data related to various geotechnical-related issues were obtained through the survey. the results of descriptive statistical analysis indicated that lack of boring locations, misclassified soil, high ground water table than expected and seepage problems are the critical geotechnical parameters with negative impacts on cost, schedule and cost overruns of bridge and highway project. the authors believe that detailed geotechnical investigation followed by provision of accurate number of boring locations and design of foundations accounting all the existing complications in the subsoil can avoid the aforesaid issues effectively. Furthermore, complete awareness about geotechnical information of project site, development and implementation of minimum standards for subsurface investigation is a pre-requisite for the designer. the results of the present work should be beneficial to construction professionals, policymakers, and researchers in the field of construction management. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

the enhanced features presented by the impedance source converter (ZSI), like efficient power conversion and reliability in comparison to voltage source inverters, have made it a suitable candidate for different distributed generation power applications. It is well established that the concept of a Z-source inverter is basically based on the null states present in the pulse width modulation scheme of a voltage source inverter. this paper presents an analysis of a three-phase impedance source inverter with the maximum constant boost control (MCBC) method in terms of boosted output voltage, thD of line current, voltage stress of switches, shoot-through state generation, and gain of the converter. Simulation is carried out in the MATLAB Simulink environment, and results are presented to verify the theoretical findings. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Automated complexes based on medium-frequency induction crucible furnaces dominate in the melting sections of modern foundry shops. However, the analysis of their operation shows that in many cases, their efficiency can be significantly improved. Yet, conducting experiments to check the feasibility of the proposed solutions in a production environment is associated with substantial difficulties. the article describes the practice of using small-sized high-frequency induction crucible furnaces to simulate the process of melting and the design of medium-frequency industrial furnaces. Finally, the authors provide the research results that specify the known data of the electromagnetic field structure in the inductor-charge system and the results of their application for melting in high-frequency induction crucible furnaces. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

PFD analysis of LNG fuel gas supply system for improving combined-cycle power plant safety

In order to determine an unavailability of each safety function subsystem that influences on an overall unavailability of entire protection system for safety analysis and enhancement, a modeling is required. this article presents a safety system modeling to evaluate the detected-undetected failures and repairable behaviors of each safety function subsystem in the studied fuel gas supply system (FGSS), which is utilized in a combined-cycle power plant. the proposed modeling deals with probability of failure on demand (PFD) analysis for calculation of the unavailability of three safety function subsystems, which are gas analytical subsystem (GAS), fuel gas controller subsystem (FGC), and shutdown valve subsystem (SDV). the interested GAS includes two different groups of gas analyzers in 2-out-of-2 (2oo2) voting scheme, when using three gas analyzers in each group in 2-out-of-3 and diagnosis (2oo3D) voting scheme. the interested FGC consists of two controllers in 2oo2 voting scheme, when the structure of each controller is in 1-out-of-1 and diagnosis (1oo1D) voting scheme. the interested SDV consists of two shutdown valves, which are installed in 1-out-of-2 (1oo2) voting scheme. the reliability block diagram is utilized for representative of combination of all three safety function subsystems, and the fault tree is utilized for calculation of PFD unavailability of each safety function subsystem. As the results obtained from the proposed safety function modeling, the influence of three safety function subsystems on the total unavailability of the FGSS is described. In addition, an example of the proposed modeling application to provide two guidelines for effective engineering design and operation is also presented. the first is a guideline to implement an effective human machine interface (HMI) at an operator workstation for real-time monitoring of the studied FGSS in the presence of failures that can be automatically detected by device diagnosis. the latter is a guidel

the shear strength is one of the parameters that is used for the design of beam members in wood buildings. Shear strength is also used as a parameter for bridge girder design. Red meranti (Shorea spp.) is a species that is easily found in Indonesia and is commonly used as a construction material for buildings, docks, or bridges. the objective of this study is to obtain an empirical equation for the shear strength with different grain angles from 0° to 10°. the research of the influence of the grain angle must be carried out under real conditions, since the direction of the wood grain is not perfectly 0° and the inclination of the grain can influence the shear strength of the wood. the method of making the specimens and the experimental methods refer to ASTM D143-22, and the total number of test specimens was 33 specimens. the tests were performed using a universal testing machine, with the test speed (crosshead) 0.6 mm/minute. the test results show that the shear strength of wood with a directional fiber angle ranging from 0° to 10° in a range from 2.77 MPa (10° grain angle) to 7.57 MPa (0° grain angle). the results of the analysis by the polynomial regression method give an empirical equation, namely Fv = 7.03 − 0.97θ + 0.066θ2 with R-Sq = 74.7%. Fiber angle has an effect on shear strength. Empirical equations offer advantages to building designers in calculating the design capacity of wood beams, especially due to shear forces. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Modern portable devices provide many features in a single device - this demands high channel capacity for faster data transmission. this paper communicates the two-element multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems operating in ultrawideband (UWB) characteristics. the antenna elements' less than quarter wavelength separation leads to strong mutual coupling. the projected design improves the isolation using parasitic elements loaded on the radiating plane and slots on the ground plane. the inverted T-shaped stubs creates an alternate current channel and slots disturbs the uniform current distribution and neutralize the coupling effect. the overall dimension of the design is 0.2λ×0.3λ×0.02λ. this improved structure has an S11 of 4.9 GHz to 17.4 GHz, with S11 being less than -10 dB and isolation of more than 20 dB over the operating frequency range. Further, MIMO diversity parameters exhibit ECC © 2022 IEEE.

In order to solve the problem of fast, safe and efficient transmission of various medical items in the hospital, this paper developed a rail type logistics transmission scheduling system. the detailed design scheme of the track vehicle system (TVS) is focused on, including the structure analysis and modeling, construction of electronic map, control system structure, path planning algorithm and dynamical scheduling strategy. Finally, the system testing and verification work are given. the proposed TVS system adopts partition scheduling strategy and electronic tag identification technology, which provides an effective solution to the multi-vehicle and multi-task logistics scheduling problem in the scene of hospital logistics transportation. © 2023 SPIE.

the grate cooler is a key piece of equipment for cooling cement clinker, whose parameter adjustment has a notable influence on energy consumption and equipment operation. this article proposes a multi-objective set-point optimization control method for the grate cooler control system, which takes into account energy efficiency evaluation. Based on the energy efficiency analysis of the grate cooler, the secondary air temperature, tertiary air temperature, and outlet clinker temperature are used as energy efficiency evaluation indicators, and a grate cooler energy efficiency evaluation model is established to construct a multi-objective function. After that, the grate pressure set point and fan current set point are optimized by utilizing the MOEA/D algorithm, and the predictive control method is combined to perform rolling optimization of the control parameters. Eventually, a simulation experiment is conducted based on the actual production data, and the simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the optimized control method. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. the water quality in Zhaojiaxi River basin (China) was investigated in terms of water quality index (WQI) and multivariate statistical techniques including factor analysis (FA) and cluster analysis (CA). the main purpose was to see the current pollution status and identify the main problems faced to environmental managers. the dataset consisted of 12 parameters at four different stations (accounting for a total of 1440 observations) from a one-year survey on a monthly basis. the FA identified nine key variables under three varifactors (VFs), which indicated 64% variance in the water quality dataset. Variables in the first, second and third VFs indicated dissolved organic pollution and the effect of eutrophication in the Zhaojiaxi River. the relationships among 12 sampling months were highlighted by CA and represented in a dendrogram to categorise different contamination levels. On the other hand, the WQI in winter and spring was higher that other times. the WQI value was 86.14 at downstream and higher than other sampling stations indicating that the self-purification function of Zhaojiaxi River was healthy. this study presents that the combination of WQI and multivariate statistical techniques can help to manage river systems integrally and effectively. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Pneumonia continues to be a substantial worldwide health issue, necessitating precise and prompt diagnosis to ensure efficacious treatment. the application of deep learning methods has demonstrated potential in the automation of chest X-ray image analysis. However, the task of optimizing the performance of these models presents a multifaceted and intricate challenge. this study presents a novel methodology that leverages Bayesian deep learning and Bayesian optimization techniques to improve the precision of pneumonia diagnosis through the analysis of chest X-ray images. the central focus of our methodology is the utilization of Bayesian deep learning models, which possess the inherent capability to capture and quantify uncertainty within their predictive outcomes. In addition to this, Bayesian optimization techniques are utilized to systematically investigate the hyperparameter and model architecture space, thereby refining the deep learning model to achieve enhanced performance. the iterative nature of Bayesian optimization allows for efficient navigation of the hyperparameter landscape, while simultaneously achieving a balance between exploration and exploitation. Extensive experiments were conducted utilizing a comprehensive dataset comprising chest X-ray images, with a specific emphasis on achieving precise pneumonia detection. the results were noteworthy, as our model demonstrated an exceptional diagnostic accuracy of 98.26%. Moreover, the utilization of the Bayesian framework has proven to be influential in enhancing the understanding of prediction uncertainty. this has resulted in healthcare professionals being equipped with the necessary knowledge to make well-informed decisions and effectively prioritize cases that necessitate additional clinical attention. the research presented demonstrates the potential for significant advancements in pneumonia diagnosis in chest X-ray imaging through the integration of Bayesian deep learning and Bayesian optimization te
