For the past 15 years, the SPIE Window and Dome Technologies and Materials conferences have been a community focal point for dissemination of information on the state of the art in materials, properties, and design, evaluation, and test methods for high-performance windows. this paper reviews developments over that time, the current state of window development, and future expectations. Examples are used to illustrate both progress and the need for continued development.

this paper offers a vision-review on current activities and new developments in the area of process integration and industrial resources management. It focuses on the conceptual process design approach and offers comments on recent tendencies in chemical engineering and process systems engineering practice, reporting a few new extensions of pinch analysis. the discussion is extended to the area of combined resources management starting with the simultaneous energy and water conservation with a specific emphasis on the evaluation of environmental impact of process integration activities introducing the oxygen-pinch and the emergy-pinch concepts. It further expands the analysis into the direction of multiple resources management trying to find a common ground for analysis of different resources. A challenging new process integration research area for the application of the conceptual design approach in the field of micro devices and micro bio-medical systems design is also discussed. We have designed a light-guide for lighting applications, including automotive headlamps. the light-guide is designed based on a free-form slab. Our intention has been to optimize the design for creating legal patterns. One of our objectives has been to investigate how the changes in the shape of the freeform light-guide affects the light pattern, and how the light source geometry affects the design. For prototyping purpose, we use a particular polymer that exhibits optical performance close to acrylic (PMMA).

A new type of Galilean binoculars is presented. the objective lenses are composed of a cemented doublet and a positive meniscus, and the eyepiece is a negative thick meniscus. In addition, all of the surfaces except the gluing surface are concave toward the eye-side of the system. So the structure is suitable for both increasing the field of view and decreasing the dimensions. It increases the vision angle by 46.5% and reduced the dimensions approx 2.33 times. the characteristics are: the magnifying power, 2.3; the object vision angle, 32 deg when its interpupillary distance is 6 mm, 27,36 deg when its interpupillary distance is 8 mm; the total of the telescope 29 mm; and the full objective aperture, (Phi) 35 mm.

Nowadays, the development of the space apparatus with high optical characteristics still stays the important task. the simplest systems which can provide the required characteristics for remote monitoring from the space are the three-mirror systems. It can be shown that in many cases, classical three-mirror systems have critical value of obscuration that leads to decreasing of resolution. Using off-axis field of view in the systems provides the way to avoid the obscuration influence. We present a technique for designing the three-mirror telescope objectives based on the systems with axial symmetry with an off-axis field of view.

this paper reports on the design and optical characterization of a single laser to multiple optical fiber (SLMOF) device for optogenetics research. Output end of SLMOF is an optical fiber bundle made by 210 optical fibers arranged into a 7x30 matrix. Single laser beam produced by laser diode (LD) is delicately steered on optical table to be coupled into target optical fiber. By controlling the power of the LD and quickly switching among fibers, this device allows for high flexibility when designing spatiotemporal light patterns. We tested the optical characterization of the device both in vitro and in vivo. Light was emitted from the end of the fiber at a power of 275.4 mW/mm(2) when a drive current of 80 mA was used. the transmission fraction was 18.6% after penetrating 0.2 mm of spinal cord slice, and 1.3% after 1 mm. Coupling with 50 ms of repetitive stimulation at 10 Hz produced an only 0.348 K temperature increase at the spinal cord surface. the capacity of the system for optogenetics research was also demonstrated by epidural spinal cord stimulation induced hindlimb motion in paralyzed rats expressing channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2).

In this study, we propose a new micro-optical system with 1.65 zoom ratio for image stitching. the new system with four layers is based on microlenses and liquid lens arrays. In order to realize the zoom function, we design the first and the fourth layers by the liquid lens and we also set up the second and the third layers as the fixed lens to tilt the optical axes. the length of the system is 6.4 mm, the image size 8.6 x 6.6 mm(2), the field of view (FOV) 50 degrees in wide mode and the field of view 28 degrees in tele mode. the MTF and distortion are used to demonstrate the zoom function, the stitching function and the stitching with zoom function, respectively. We use the ZEMAX ray-tracing software to demonstrate the simulation of image stitching in wide and tele modes.

optical transport networks have been considered as one of the dominant energy consumers in the modern Internet, wherein the design toward green communication with awareness of energy saving has received growing attention from both industry and academia. this article reviews green designs in the Internet optical transport backbone, particularly on the current progresses in the development of various energy-saving strategies, such as optical bypass configurations and turning off (or sleeping) equipments, as well as the impact on network survivability and security, and renewable energy use. the article will also discuss how the network control plane should be extended to support the energy-saving functionality in the context of Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS). © 2011 IEEE.

Illumination optical design using non-coherent sources is of major interest for sensing applications requiring a uniform illumination. We present the development of a custom biconic lens array, enabling beam shaping of a halogen source array to a rectangular uniform illumination. First, the tungsten halogen sources were accurately modelled considering the near-field emission pattern and broadband spectrum. Following, the illumination lens array is optimized, including a study on the optimal arrangement and pitch of the array, and ensuring a manufacturable design by taking the optical and mechanical tolerances into account. the optimized lens array comprises of custom lenses (Ø 20 mm) featuring a first spherical surface and a second biconic surface with different radii of curvature and aspherical coefficients (up to the 8th order) in the X and Y direction. A spatial uniformity, defined as the standard deviation of the flux distribution, of 0.0002 was achieved within the envisioned illumination area of 50 x 20 mm2 being close to a perfect uniformity considering a targeted value of 0. Finally, the aspheric biconic lens is manufactured using ultraprecision diamond tooling (Nanotech 350FG), and its performance is successfully validated in a laboratory demonstrator setup, giving rise to an optimized and uniform halogen source illumination. © 2023 SPIE.
