Designers of Visual sensor Network (VSN) platforms face many challenges. Image sensors deliver large amounts of data and substantial computing power and memory are required for processing. At the same time power consumption should be kept low to facilitate battery-powered operation. the increasing deployment of VSNs also raises privacy and security related questions. In this work we present a new VSN platform called TrustEYE.M4 which is designed as a state-of-the-art research platform for the development of secure VSN applications. It integrates an ARM Cortex M4 processor, a WiFi radio, a high-performance image sensor and a dedicated security chip. We present the architecture of TrustEYE.M4 and demonstrate its capabilities with a secure video streaming application. Copyright 2014 ACM.

A platform-independent communication mechanism is essential for the seamless integration of embedded devices into the Web of things. Web services provide for such communication, though there remains an open question as to whether they are suitable for hardware-constrained devices. While there is a general perception that they are too resource-intensive, there are few scientific studies dedicated to answering this question. As a result, researchers or developers investigating applications for the Web of things have little evidence to support a decision on the best technical solution. this paper presents the results of a study designed to assess the performance of Web services on embedded devices. For our investigation, we deployed Web services on Sun SPOTs, representing medium-sized wireless sensor platforms, and analysed disk space, message size, response time and energy consumption. Our study quantifies the overhead of Web services and provides empirical data on whether this Web technology is a suitable approach for embedded devices. © 2010 ieee.

A protocol called SSPSF is designed based on shadow fading environment in Wireless sensor Network. the aim of SSPSF is to reduce the number of working nodes and to balance nodes' energy consumption when network's connectivity is guaranteed, and then to prolong network's life. In SSPSF, wireless channel uses shadow fading model, and a relational model about node-density and connected probability is constructed. SSPSF adjusts network's connected probability by node-density so that implements distributed sleep scheduling, resolving the sleep node-scheduling problem in shadow fading environment. the proposed protocol exhibits the effect of correctness and effectiveness. Simulation shows that SSPSF can reduce the number of working nodes effectively, while both can guarantee the connectivity of network and prolong network lifetime.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be used for a variety of applications. For many applications, a high reliability and low delay are required. Due to lossy feature of wireless channel, providing a reliable communication is very challenging. the most frequently used approach for providing the reliability is to use the acknowledgement based retransmission mechanism which increases the end-to-end delay especially when the number of hops from a sensor to the sink node is large. In this paper, we propose a redundancy-based approach to provide a high reliability while maintaining a low end-to-end delay. the proposed mechanism uses a redundant transmission when a link is unreliable or the end-to-end delay requirement is strict. We implement the proposed mechanism on a wireless sensor network which consists of IRIS motes, and evaluate the performance of the proposed mechanism.

Wireless Multimedia sensor Networks (WMSNs) play an important role in pervasive and ubiquitous systems. the multimedia content in such networks has the potential of enhancing the level of information collected, enlarging the range of coverage, and enabling multi-view support. For WMSN applications, the multi-tier network architecture has proven to be more beneficial than a single-tier in terms of energy-efficiency, scalability, functionality and reliability. In this context, a multimedia intrusion detection application appears as a promising application of multi-tier WMSNs, where the lower tier can detect the intruder using scalar sensors, and the higher tier camera nodes will be woken up to send real time video sequences from the detected area. the transmission of multimedia content requires a certain quality level from the user perspective, while energy consumption and network overhead should be minimized. Among the existing mechanisms for improving video transmissions, Forward Error Correction (FEC) can be regarded as a suitable solution to improve video quality level from the user point-of-view. In this work, we propose a Quality of Experience (QoE)-aware FEC mechanism for WMSNs, which creates redundant packets based on impact of the frame on the user experience. According to the simulation results, our proposed mechanism achieved similar video quality level compared with standard FEC, while reducing the transmission of redundant packets, which will bring many benefits in a resource-constrained system. © 2012 ieee.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a technology which consists a number of sensor nodes distributed among of an area usually for monitoring purposes. As the emerging of this technology has been rapidly increased nowadays, the successful of the wireless sensor networks application is highly depends on the reliable communication among the sensor nodes. One major problem in wireless sensor networks environment is the limitation of the physical resource in sensor nodes which energy resource has been identified as a critical constraint for achieving the demanding capabilities in wireless sensor networks application. Packet dissemination is one of the data transmission method in wireless sensor networks routing protocol where it would cause high energy consumption in sensor node due to the high energy consuming for disseminate the packet through the network. Initial step in routing protocol using packet dissemination method for wireless sensor networks could contribute energy efficiency if it has the ability to reduce the energy consumption. the proposed store-forward technique is to define the initial step in packet dissemination routing protocol whereas to identify the neighbor nodes without consuming high energy in sensor nodes. the result shows using the store-forward technique gave significant impact in conserving the energy in sensor nodes where it slightly reduce the energy consumption in terms of power availability after the routing initialization process is executed. © 2012 AICIT.

Cellular systems operate on ISM band with the coexistence of wide-deployed WLAN is a promising solution to offload the crowded cellular band, where cellular device acting as virtual a WLAN station contends for WLAN channel resource via applying the same ieee 802.11 distributed Coordination Function(DCF) as WLAN rivals is a straightforward way. However, the conventional mechanism cannot fully utilize the spectrum resource, we propose an adaptive probability access (APA) method which could adjust the channel access probability of cellular system by maximizing the proportional fairness throughput of both systems. this method can adjust the cellular access probability step by step to ensure that both cellular and WLAN work near the optimum operating spot. Simulation results show that the proposed APA method improves both the proportional fairness and total throughput.

To achieve security in distributed wireless sensor networks, one of the most promising approaches is the so-called random pre-distribution of key seeds. Pairwise secure communication channels between nodes were established or discovered by using key information that were constructed and pre-distribution to each node in distributed wireless sensor networks. Combining DNA model with the idea of multiple key pool, an extended DNA model based pair-wise key establishment scheme is proposed. the nodes select multi-DNA strands as its key ring and use the code of some oligonucleotide in some DNA strand as their actual pair-wise key. the key connectivity, security and overhead of the scheme are discussed. the analysis shows that the overhead of computation and communication of the new scheme is little and the security is greatly improved than the original DNA model scheme.

the application of leaky feeder (radiating) cables is a common solution for the implementation of reliable radio communication in huge industrial buildings, tunnels and mining environment. this paper explores the possibilities of leaky feeders for 1D and 2D localization in wireless systems based on time of flight chirp spread spectrum technologies. the main focus of this paper is to present and analyse the results of time of flight and received signal strength measurements with leaky feeders in indoor and outdoor conditions. the authors carried out experiments to compare ranging accuracy and radio coverage area for a point-like monopole antenna and for a leaky feeder acting as a distributed antenna. In all experiments RealTrac equipment based on nanoLOC radio standard was used. the estimation of the most probable path of a chirp signal going through a leaky feeder was calculated using the ray tracing approach. the typical non-line-of-sight errors profiles are presented. the results show the possibility to use radiating cables in real time location technologies based on time-of-flight method.

this paper introduces some concepts of WSN and Pervasive computing, then presents AesSidhe, a WSN architecture currently under design in Instituto TecnolÃgico de la Laguna. the features and constraints of the hardware architecture are described, and the current work in the software architectureis described and commented. An analysis of usage of the architecture in pervasive computer systems for three generations is done after. Finally, the conclusions on the results of the analysis of the architecture are presented. © 2012 ieee.
