While mobile malware has played a relatively small role compared to the behemoth of desktop malware, the changes both in the capability as well as in the proliferation of the mobile devices will steadily increase the attractiveness of mobile devices as resources to be attacked. the increased usage and connectivity of mobile devices opens up a much larger set of attack vectors to compromise these devices. In this paper, we discuss how the new features of mobile devices opens up the capability to create a new generation of mobile malware which is capable of realistically spreading epidemically on a fully mobile infection vector. We present a prototype of such a mobile malware that uses these features to replicate itself and spread over a mobile device-to-device vector. Using simulations we give quantitative support for the number of mobile devices and conditions needed to for an epidemic spread of mobile malware and present infection scenarios in downtown Chicago. Our results show that the recent growth and market dominance of just a handful of mobile phone companies and the trend towards mobile operating systems monoculture has already created a viable substrate for epidemic mobile malware. © 2012 ieee.

Drawing on previous work, the authors explore the role of leaders and their effect on the temporal communication patterns of global software student project teams. Archived group interactions captured during the course of two virtual team projects involving students in the US, Panama, and Turkey were analyzed using a content analysis scheme derived from a collaboration theory that captures communication behavior associated with teams in virtual environments. Results from these analyses suggest that although teams with leaders have many more communications throughout a project, they have similar temporal patterns as compared to teams without leaders. However, the proportion of the different communication behaviors varies considerably between leader and leaderless teams as well as between leaders and their "followers." More specifically, analysis demonstrated how variation in temporal patterns for leaders and their followers were different from those team members with no leader, thereby bolstering the argument for developing and testing temporal measures in group research.

the effectiveness of wireless sensor networks (WSN) depends on the coverage and connectivity provided by node deployment, which is one of the key topics in WSN. In this paper, a modified virtual force-based node self-deployment algorithm for nodes with mobility is proposed. In the virtual force-based approach, all nodes are seen as points subject to repulsive and attractive force exerted among them, nodes can move according to the calculated force. In the proposed approach, Delaunay triangulation is formed with these nodes, adjacent relationship is defined if two nodes are connected in the Delaunay diagram. Force can only be exerted from those adjacent nodes within the communication range. Simulation results showed that the proposed approach has higher coverage rate and faster convergence time than traditional virtual force algorithm.

the average consensus algorithm is a well known distributed process in which the nodes iteratively communicate with the nodes within their communication range in order to obtain an estimation of the global average. these repeated communications, when performed in a uniformly randomly deployed network, such as a Wireless sensor Network, lead to several nodes consuming much more power than others, thus reducing the lifetime of the whole network. this paper proposes a fully distributed method that allows the network nodes to suitably decide which subset of communications provides the best performance during the consensus process in terms of convergence time and power efficiency. Our method simultaneously improves both the convergence of the consensus algorithm and the lifetime of the whole network. Moreover, as a benchmark, we propose a convex optimization problem whose results can be compared with those obtained by our distributed approach. Simulation results are presented to show the efficiency of our proposal, comparing our two methods with existing approaches in the related literature.

In wireless smart metering optimization for energy efficiency is indispensable, because in case of systems without external power supply, battery life is a key factor regarding the usability of the whole system. sensor networks are less sensitive for delay, this is why aggregation of packets is possible. the aim of this paper is to determine analytically the amount of meter records to aggregate in one packet, regarding the SNR which characterizes the quality of the channel, so that the energy usage is optimal. the introduced formulas, help determining scheduling parameters in wireless smart metering systems. the calculations are presented on a real world scenario and system using GFSK modulation. © 2012 ieee.

Recently, it was argued that the true potential of sensor network services can be realized only if they become an integral part of a larger context-aware distributed system. the benefit is that, the intergration allows sensor network services to be seamlessly accessible to remote users through devices that they are already familiar with. this integration can be simplified using a publish-subscribe system. However, the wireless medium facilitates eavesdropping and some data is sensitive. this makes the security extremely important. Furthermore, sensor nodes have limited power and processing resources, so standard security mechanisms, which are heavy in weight and resource consumption, are unsuitable. these challenges increase the need to develop comprehensive and secure solutions that achieve wider protection, while maintaining desirable network performance. In this paper, we propose a secure publish-subscribe-based in-network data storage service in WSNs to provide different security requirements such as confidentiality, authentication, integrity, availability, and authorized access.

During the last few years there has been an increasing number of people-centric sensing projects, which combine location information with other sensors available on mobile devices, such as the camera, the microphone or the accelerometer, giving birth to a different dimension in sensing our environment compared to the existing wireless sensor networks approach. In this paper, we envision a new scenario, where users develop their own participatory urban sensing projects at a large scale through the use of social networks. Consequently, users can participate in campaigns created by other users, according to their sensitivities and interests, exploiting the existing enormous social interconnections offered by existing social networking tools. We place our primary concern to protecting user privacy and address the need for new solutions in location anonymity and access control under this new complex and dynamic communication paradigm. © 2010 ieee.

Reprogramming is a technique used in wireless sensor networks WSN) to update the software part of sensor nodes from remote locations over wireless links during run time of the network. However, reprogramming needs to be integrated with secure and efficient authentication technique to avoid any unauthorized access to sensor nodes. this paper gives an efficient authentication technique for distributed reprogramming using version numbers from version control operation of reprogramming. the Existing version control technique is modified to achieve both authentication and version control in reprogramming. the proposed method is compared with the two other algorithms defined for authentication of users in Das, Two-factor user authentication in wireless sensor networks. ieee Trans Wireless Commun 8: 1086-1090, 2009) [3] and He et al, SDRP: a secure and distributed reprogramming protocol for wireless sensor networks. ieee Trans Ind Electron 59: 4155-4163, 2012) [5]. the comparative analysis shows version control method is more efficient and is robust to impersonation attack.

ieee 802.15.4 standard specifies a beacon-enabled mode which provides a synchronization environment using beacon transmissions. However, this mode is designed for single hop networks and its use in multi-hop networks is not straight-forward. the main challenges of using beacon-enabled mode in multi-hop networks are how to efficiently schedule beacon transmissions to avoid direct and indirect beacon collisions and how to make a schedule tolerant to the clock drifts due to the low cost components. In this paper, we present TBoPS, a novel technique for scheduling beacons in the cluster tree topology. TBoPS uses a dedicated period called beacon only period (BOP) to schedule beacons at the beginning of ieee 802.15.4 super-frame. the advantages of TBoPS is that every beacon-enabled node selects a beacon schedule distributively during association. We analysed the robustness of TBoPS to clock drifts. We also show through simulations that all nodes in the network are synchronized and follow the same super frame structure.

Disasters aroused due to dynamic movement of large, uncontrollable crowds are ever increasing. the inherent real-time dynamics of crowd need to be tightly monitored and alerted to avoid such disasters. Most of the existing crowd monitoring systems is difficult to deploy, maintain, and dependent on single component failure. this research work proposes novel network architecture based on the key technologies of wireless sensor network and mobile computing for the effective prediction of causes of crowd disaster particularly stampedes in the crowd and thereby alerting the crowd controlling station to take appropriate actions in time. In the current implemented version of the proposed architecture, the smart phones act as wireless sensor nodes to estimate the probability of occurrence of stampede using data fusion and analysis of embedded sensors such as tri-axial accelerometers, gyroscopes, GPS, light sensors etc. the implementation of the proposed architecture in smart phones provides light weight, easy to deploy, context aware wireless services for effective crowd disaster mitigation.
