In this paper, we present a scalable parallel virtual machine planning and failover method that enables high availability at a VM level in a data center. the solution is implemented and used in IBM's CMS enterprise private cloud as a high availability feature for efficient failover in large data centers with a large number of servers, VMs, and a large number of disks. the introduced restart system enables dynamic and at-failover-time planning and execution, and keeps the recovery time within limits of service level agreement (SLA) allowed time budget. the initial serial failover time is reduced by a factor of up to 11 for parallel implementation, and by a factor of up to 44 for parallel failover - parallel storage mapping implementation. As part of our future work, we plan to explore the applicability of this planning and failover solution for Disaster Recovery.

A hybrid approach combining object detection in image and eye-fixation probability map calculation is proposed. this approach has been evaluated on human-like eye-fixation prediction benchmark. Experimental results show viability and efficiency of this approach providing comparison with state-of-art algorithms. the proposed approach has been applied to a real-world application of detection of fire-and-smoke in natural outdoor environment.

Controlling a robotic gripper to handle objects in different sizes and shapes in real-time is a complex task. the challenge is to adapt and position the gripper according to a target object. In this work, by considering a three fingered robotic gripper with a finger structure similar to that of human finger, we study the positioning of fingers in a gripper in the two dimensional plane. Using an inverse kinematic model for a pulley based underactuated mechanical finger, we derive a region of reach in the plane of the finger. Simulations demonstrate the limits of reach under different conditions. this can be used to derive the positioning of each finger, as well as in path planning to control the reach of the gripper.

the threat of cyber-attacks grows up, as one can see by several negative security-news from companies and private persons. [7] Especially small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SME) are in focus of external attackers because they have not implemented sufficient security strategies and components for their networks yet. Additionally, tablets, smartphones, and netbooks changed the requirements of IT security rapidly. Today, there are several security components (e.g. anti-virus-system, firewall, and intrusion detection system) available to protect enterprise networks;unfortunately, they work independently from each other - isolated. But many attacks can only be recognized if logs and events of different security components are combined and correlated with each other. this possibility is offered by a security information and event management (SIEM) system. But nowadays these systems are very complex and expensive in deployment and maintenance ([12]). the SIMU project, funded by the BMBF [6] and presented in this paper, offers several features of a SIEM system with better handling and more efficient use in the SME environment.

We propose a novel cloud-based data storage solution framework named Data Vaporizer (DV). the proposed framework provides many unique features such as storing data over multiple clouds or storage zones, resistance against organized vendor attacks, maintaining data integrity and confidentiality through client-side processing, fault-tolerance against failure of one or more cloud storage locations and avoids vendor lock-in of data. Data Vaporizer is highly configurable to meet various client data encryption requirements, compliance to industry standards and fault tolerance constraints depending on the nature and sensitivity of the data. To enhance the level of security and reliability;especially to protect data against malicious attacks and secure key management in cloud;DV uses advanced techniques of secret sharing of the keys. the architecture and optimality of data placement and efficient key management algorithm of DV ensure that the solution is highly scalable. the data foot print and subsequent cost incurred by our storage solution is minimal, considering the benefits provided. the initial response for the adoption of DV in actual client scenarios is promising.

Open Cloud computing Interface (OCCI) proposes one of the first widely accepted, community-based, open standards for managing any kinds of cloud resources. But as it is specified in natural language, OCCI is imprecise, ambiguous, incomplete, and needs a precise definition of its core concepts. Indeed, the OCCI Core Model has conceptual drawbacks: an imprecise semantics of its type classification system, a nonextensible data type system for OCCI attributes, a vague and limited extension concept and the absence of a configuration concept. To tackle these issues, this paper proposes a precise metamodel for OCCI. this metamodel defines rigourously the static semantics of the OCCI core concepts, of a precise type classification system, of an extensible data type system, and of both extension and configuration concepts. this metamodel is based on the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF), its structure is encoded with Ecore and its static semantics is rigourously defined withobject Constraint Language (OCL). As a consequence, this metamodel provides a concrete language to precisely define and exchange OCCI models. the validation of our metamodel is done on the first world-wide dataset of OCCI extensions already published in the literature, and addressing inter-cloud networking, infrastructure, platform, application, service management, cloud monitoring, and autonomic computing domains, respectively. this validation highlights simplicity, consistency, correctness, completeness, and usefulness of the proposed metamodel.
