A critical activity in enterprise Architecture (EA) projects is building models for communicating a consolidated enterprise structure. this is achieved by modeling elements belonging in a plurality of domains (e.g., business, processes, technology, information) and making explicit the relationships existing between them. After models are completed, they are used to support the analysis of the enterprise. However, the increasing size and complexity of these models has made this a difficult task for humans alone, and has fostered the research around automatic analysis methods. the problem is that usability concerns that are very important for modeling languages usually go against automation requirements. One example of this is ArchiMate, a widely used language for creating and visualizing EA models. On the one hand, ArchiMate has a low number of elements compared to the domains it addresses. this makes the language simple and easy to learn, but seriously limits the kinds of analysis that can be performed. On the other hand, ArchiMate does not include mandatory attributes in any element, which makes the modeling task easier, but also hinders the quality of the analyses. the hypotheses that we have studied are that to provide automatic analysis methods it is necessary to: 1) have the possibility of extending any metamodel with specialized and typed concepts and relations, with the level of granularity that the analysis requires, 2) and to force the presence of attributes that depend entirely on the selected analysis method. To study this, we have created a model-based tool for analyzing ArchiMate models called iArchiMate. this tool makes it possible to create and run analysis functions, and also to extend the ArchiMate metamodel with the elements that specific analysis require. this paper discusses and illustrates the motivations and requirements for supporting automatic model analysis, the requirements of analysis methods, and the core characteristics of iArchiMate.

One of the main weaknesses of the concept of alignment between business and information technology (IT) process and functions in enterprises is that it is abstract, difficult to actualize and harder to sustain. the misalignment between business and IT can be attributed to many factors. Two key factors that stand out are the knowledge and cultural gaps between these functions and the perception that business-IT alignment can only be achieved through a top-down process. Practical and tangible means to achieve the elusive alignment by addressing these key factors are therefore desirable towards enabling the effective development of enterprise software applications. this objective can be achieved by identifying a way to actualize and sustain BIA at a level stakeholders from both business and technology domains collaborate to achieve mutually shared goals. Collaboration between business and IT stakeholders is closest during software development project implementation. Effective communication during the requirements engineering stage of these projects offers an opportunity for business and IT to achieve and sustain alignment. However, if the implementation stage of the project is impeded by knowledge gaps and performed in an ad-hoc fashion it can lead to or aggravate misalignment. REFINTO is a requirements engineering framework and tool aimed at facilitating business-IT alignment (BIA) through a knowledge-driven, collaborative and iterative process. It empowers business and IT stakeholders with a knowledge repository that addresses terminology gaps, quickly manage the requirements engineering process in response to rapidly changing business demands, and reuse requirements and artifacts. REFINTO has been applied to support large-scale enterprise application development such as distributed and service oriented applications involving discovery and reusing of services at a top global investment bank.

Deviation detection is important for self-monitoring systems. To perform deviation detection well requires methods that, given only "normal" data from a distribution of unknown parametric form, can produce a reliable statistic for rejecting the null hypothesis, i.e. evidence for devating data. One measure of the strength of this evidence based on the data is the p-value, but few deviation detection methods utilize p-value estimation. We compare three methods that can be used to produce p-values: one class support vector machine (OCSVM), conformal anomaly detection (CAD), and a simple "most central pattern" (MCP) algorithm. the SVM and the CAD method should be able to handle a distribution of any shape. the methods are evaluated on synthetic data sets to test and illustrate their strengths and weaknesses, and on data from a real life self-monitoring scenario with a city bus fleet in normal traffic. the OCSVM has a Gaussian kernel for the synthetic data and a Hellinger kernel for the empirical data. the MCP method uses the Mahalanobis metric for the synthetic data and the Hellinger metric for the empirical data. the CAD uses the same metrics as the MCP method and has a k-nearest neighbour (kNN) nonconformity measure for both sets. the conclusion is that all three methods give reasonable, and quite similar, results on the real life data set but that they have clear strengths and weaknesses on the synthetic data sets. the MCP algorithm is quick and accurate when the "normal" data distribution is unimodal and symmetric (with the chosen metric) but not otherwise. the OCSVM is a bit cumbersome to use to create (quantized) p-values but is accurate and reliable when the data distribution is multimodal and asymmetric. the CAD is also accurate for multimodal and asymmetric distributions. the experiment on the vehicle data illustrate how algorithms like these can be used in a self-monitoring system that uses a fleet of vehicles to conduct deviation detection without supervision

distributed computing systems (DCS) host a wide variety of enterprise applications in dynamic and uncertain operating environments. these applications require stringent reliability, availability, and quality of service (QoS) guarantee to maintain their service level agreements (SLAs). Due to the growing size, increasing complexity, and varying nature of applications hosted in DCS, development of a single autonomic performance management system is difficult to maintain the SLAs of all of these applications. therefore, a customizable autonomic performance management system is introduced in this paper, by using model-integrated computing methodologies, which allow application domain architects to develop meta-models of each system, various system modules with attributes, their connectivity, constraints, and visualization aspects. then, domain engineers can define the initial settings of the application, QoS objectives, system components' placement, and interaction among these components in a graphical domain specific modeling environment. this configurable performance management system facilitates reusability of the same components, algorithms, and application performance models in different deployment settings.

Modern society has experienced many advances in science and technology. Educational communities have to respond to these changes quickly to provide students with courses and activities based on the latest achievements in science and technology. In this paper, the authors consider the Virtual Simulation object Concept (VSO-concept) as it pertains to an e-learning course design using the requirements of reusable learning objects (RLO). this course's design is based on a VSO-project built with the use of computer-aided application packages integrated into the cloud platform for high performance computing called CLAVIRE. this platform enables users to build scientific workflows (SWF) by writing easy instructions regarding package execution in distributed heterogeneous computational environments. VSO is formed from one or more experimentally tested SWFs for solving complex interdisciplinary problems and may be shared with a scientific community for collaborative work and discussions. the proposed approach allows us to create a course quickly: structure, text-based resources, list and stack of virtual learning labs, sets of tools for learning outcomes assessment, etc. the development/changing VSO-project and performing practical works require web-browsers only (the installation of client applications is not required). the example of applying the approach for the course "Public Ground Transport Scheduling" is shown.

enterprise architecture is practiced in different ways, and there are different types of enterprise architects with quite different roles. this paper looks closer at the role of enterprise architects and the importance of the enterprise architects' understanding of boundary issues in their practice. the paper suggests that enterprise architects must focus on problem-finding more than problem-solving, and should develop not just more dialectic skills, but also dialogic skills. the paper also argues that the enterprise architects must gain a deeper understanding of the enterprise, and need to start working with other enterprise disciplines.
